EDITH (EDIE) D. SHENDROSKI

(née GULENCHYN)

November 15, 1953 – February 8, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Edith Shendroski (née Gulenchyn), in the Misericordia Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer, during the early morning of Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at the age of 68 years.

Edith is survived by her daughter Cathy (Simon); siblings Pat, Joan (Dave) and Stanley (Holley) and her many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur; parents, Stanley and Mary; and sisters Elaine and Susan.

Edith was the fourth daughter in a family of six siblings.  She was raised on her parents’ farm in Medika, attended high school in Whitemouth and later moved to Winnipeg as a young adult to try her hand at City life where her and Arthur lived for a few years before buying their trailer and later building a house and raising a family in Hadashville. Edith was a hard working and kind hearted woman who will be greatly missed.

She started her early career as a waitress at the Prawda Esso Restaurant and then moved onto secretarial work in Winnipeg at places such as Canada Trust.  When she moved back to Hadashville she was employed at the Pineland Forest Nursery, West Hawk Parks Office, RGD (now RM of Reynolds) and for many years at Sun Gro Horticulture. She was especially proud of her work at Sun Gro becoming one of the first ladies to work in the field where she started combining in the summers, got her ticket and become a fork lift loader operator, held various production jobs and would later advance to working in the warehouse and acting as a team leader.  There was never a dull moment when she worked at the Peat Moss Plant. She really loved her job there.

In her downtime, Edith enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening.  At times the freezer was so full of sweet goodies especially at Christmas that it lasted for months.  You name it and Edith had probably baked it. The Company’s Coming Cookbooks always seemed to be on the counter.

Edith was also a best friend to her daughter growing up. They enjoyed Friday night movies, board game nights and music nights while Arthur worked night shift.

In the summer Edith, Arthur and Cathy could be seen going to numerous festivals throughout the Province, going for drives, watching movies, going to the beach, and playing bingo.

Edith was an avid walker and spent much time going for long walks both around her home and when she went into the City to visit her daughter in later years.  Edith also enjoyed attending Goldeyes Baseball, Manitoba Moose and going to various concerts and museums.

Edith also loved to travel and went on many trips throughout her life within Canada and the United States.  Her travel companions were often her husband Arthur, daughter Cathy and friends Sereena and Sally.

Cathy and family would also like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and Staff at Misericordia Hospital for the great care provided to her in her final days;  also to Simon Brigham, Joan and Dave Kumhyr, Tony Bargenda, Denise and Howard Benson, Sereena Mewusch and Holley and Stanley Gulenchyn for all their love and support during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Edith’s memory to Misericordia Health Centre Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society.

A remembrance of Edith's life will be held at a later date for close friends and family once Covid Restrictions allow it.  In the meantime, Edith's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. They also encourage the sharing of photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Cathy, I had not seen your mom since shortly after high school. Looking through the photo biography it is easy to see that the beautiful smile I remember from those days continued to grace her lovely face.  May the heavens be brighter with her smile & laughter.

So sorry to hear about your mom & sister.  She had the most beautiful smile and sense of humour.  We had such a great time dancing with the sisters and Stan , to " we are here for a good time...not a long time"!, at Taylor and Adam's wedding. My beautiful cousin Edie, you will be missed.  When you smiled, your whole face always smiled.  Your unique ability to put everyone at ease and be comfortable will be remembered.  Keep on smiling sweetheart, keep on smiling.  Cathy and family, hold on to the memories--they are her legacy.
