KIMBERLEY ANNE SHIEL

Kimberley Anne Shiel (Lambert), 50, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away unexpectedly at the Grace Hospital on April 22, 2023.

Kimberley was born on March 19, 1973, to Jack and Mabel Lambert in Swan River, Manitoba.  Kim’s early years growing up in rural Manitoba on her parents’ farm included playing the organ, playing in the school band, writing fiction, participating in 4H activities, crafting entries for local fair, and spending time with her nieces and nephew.

Kimberley graduated from Swan Valley Regional Secondary School in 1991, she then proceeded to continue her studies at Brandon University where she excelled, completing a BA in psychology and winning awards along the way.  She then completed a certificate in business admin. 

After completing her education in Brandon, Kimberley moved to Winnipeg just in time for the flood of the century in 1997.  She quickly found a job in accounting at Cunningham Business Interiors.  Kim then moved on to Great West Life where she worked in corporate properties and started working on her Chartered General Accountant (CGA) designation.  Then moving into financial reporting where she would complete her CGA designation in 2008 and worked her way up to be Director, Corporate Financial Reporting at Canada Life. 

In high school, Kimberley met Grant.  Kimberley and Grant resumed their high school romance in the late 90s, purchased their home together in 2001, and married in 2004.  Kim and Grant enjoyed working in their backyard growing and expanding their gardens.  They also appreciated spending time with family and friends, enjoying having them visit their Winnipeg home and making numerous trips back to Swan River to spend time with family.  Their children were multiple cats that Kimberley loved and spoiled.

Kimberley enjoyed visiting new locations, traveling to Florida and Vancouver on high school trips, and going to London and Dublin with GWL.  She also looked forward to numerous shopping excursions to Grand Forks, Fargo, and Minneapolis and family vacations to Cancun, San Diego, Quebec City, Montreal, and the Black Hills. 

Kim loved animals, especially the many dogs, and cats growing up on the farm.  As a child, she would bottle-feed kittens after their mother had gone missing and was always looking after multiple cats on the farm.  Once getting her own home, Kimberley, within a few months had two new kittens, Fez and Shaggy.  She cared for them for over 19 years losing them only in the last few years.  It wasn’t long before she once again brought another cat home, this time the 3-year-old Maui.  Kimberley also enjoyed visiting the local Zoo as well as making zoos a priority on her travels. 

Kimberley had a long relationship with music, learning to play the organ as a child, clarinet in band, and playing and singing with her mom.  She also would put on song and dance shows with her many nieces and nephew and even entered the local talent stage receiving honorable mentions.  Kim’s interest in music continued into adulthood keeping up with modern music and heading to concerts of old favorites as well as new bands.  Kimberley often would sing around the house even taking up the guitar and ukulele in recent years.

During her school years, Kim wrote many stories, even submitting and getting published in the Western Producer paper.  Over the past few years, Kimberley once again tapped into her creativity taking up writing.  She entered flash fiction contests around the world from Australia, the UK, and the United States, waking up in the wee hours of the morning to participate in writing classes. She quickly excelled at this task earning numerous long and short list placings as well as being published in a flash anthology. 

Kim’s creative side extended beyond music and writing, often trying new things in the kitchen, finding recipes online, and hunting down the ingredients in local stores.  She also attended many painting classes usually attending with friends making it an outing.  Kimberley was always picking up little trinkets while out shopping, saying she could use this or that for some planned craft/project with one of her many great nieces/nephews or for some plan around the house or yard.  

Kimberley also had a green thumb, growing many plants in her home.  Like her parents she enjoyed the summer gardening season, each year adding more pots and planters to the back yard growing new and more colorful flowers each season.  Soon one small garden would expand into multiple raised gardens and a complete reconfiguration of the backyard to add more space for plants and vegetables.

Kimberley was predeceased by her father Jack Lambert and mother Mabel Lambert.  She is survived by her husband Grant Shiel, their cat Maui, sister Karen Gogol and her children Michelle and Matt, brother Roy (Kim) Lambert and their children Lisa, Kerri, Whitney, and Sarah, father and mother-in-law Reid and Georgina Shiel, sister-in-law Kari (Guy) Bardwell and their children Jensen, Peyton, and Ryan as well as numerous great nieces/nephews and extended family.  She will also be dearly missed by many close friends. 

A celebration of Kimberley’s life will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, June 16, 2023 at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road (Unitarian Facility).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter.
