John Shopka

JOHN SHOPKA
June 22, 1947 – January 9, 2026
It is with much sadness that the family announces the sudden but peaceful passing of our brother, John Henry Shopka, in Winnipeg on Friday, January 9th, 2026 at the age of 78.
John was predeceased by his parents, Michael (Kayo) and Anne Shopka; and his sister-in-law, Heather Shopka.
Left to mourn his passing are his siblings, Michael, Brian (Linda), Barry (Lynda), Linda (Barry); niece Michelle (Rendy); nephews, Bryan and Justin; and great nieces & nephews, Breanna & Colt, Bailee & Chloe, Jamie; as well as many cousins.
John was born in Winnipeg but, since his dad was a member of the Canadian Air Force, John spent several years in other cities in Canada but eventually the family returned to Winnipeg and John was then able to enjoy visiting many relations in Brandon.
Although John was diagnosed in his early teens with epilepsy, he was generally a happy person. Smiling – even when he disagreed with you, in which case, being stubborn, would still do what he wanted.
John loved animals, especially cats, watching the Winnipeg Jets hockey games, and listening and taping his music onto cassettes.
In accordance with John’s wishes, there will be no funeral.
Rest in Peace John,
you will be missed.
Our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the staff at Oakview Extendicare for their care and compassion throughout the years and also to the friends John made there.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Epilepsy and Seizure Association of Manitoba or any Animal Rescue of your choice.
