Sylvia Short

SYLVIA SHORT
February 3, 1951 – December 17, 2025
On December 17, 2025, at the age of 74, Sylvia Burgess Short (née Creighton) passed away after a long and difficult year of health issues.
Sylvia was a mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt and friend. Sylvia was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba at Misericordia hospital on February 3, 1951 approximately two hours before her twin sister Diane.
Sylvia is survived by her two children, Jay (Megan) and Jolene (Kevin); grandchildren, Noah, Nate, Isabel, Nolan and Eva; daughter in law Jenn; twin sister Diane; sister Judy (Bob); brother Scott; as well as many nephews, nieces and cousins.
Sylvia was predeceased by her parents, Helen and David Creighton; her brothers, David and Gordon; as well as her ex-husband Glen Short.
Sylvia will be remembered for many things by her family and friends but one of her greatest joys besides her children and grandchildren was teaching. Sylvia started in the Winnipeg School Division as a teacher’s assistant (TA). She worked full time as a TA and once her kids were old enough that they didn’t need her as much, she made the decision to go back to school on weekends and evenings while still working full time to get her degree in education. Her kids watched proudly as she walked across the stage and got her degree and finally became a full-fledged teacher. She showed great courage and discipline and her family was so proud of her hard work and achievements.
Sylvia loved being a teacher and would spend part of her summer getting things prepared and ready for the following school year and would often be spending her personal money to help make sure the kids had the resources they needed in order to get the best education and so they could be safe. Many of Sylvia’s students were underprivileged and therefore she would purchase and provide things like food, jackets, hygiene products and shoes to help her students.
Sylvia not only taught but she also coached multiple sports. She volunteered for Northwood community center and coached her daughter’s ringette and softball teams for a few years.
Once Sylvia retired, she tutored for a few years until her health issues forced her to stop. She kept busy in retirement by trying to spoil her grandkids as much as possible. She loved being a grandma and would be at any concert, sporting event, dance recital etc. that she could.
Sylvia has been cremated. The family plans to hold a celebration of life in warmer weather, spring of 2026.
Please give a listen to Don Williams, I Believe In You, which was one of her favourites.

Blessed to call you cousin (cuz) . We were always cousins but then pen-friends for many years, until I was so privileged to meet you, when you arranged my visit from the U.K. and your return trip to meet all the family. Lots of happy memories Sylvia, you'll be sorely missed. At peace now, free from all pain.

well sis, I didn't think you would have to leave at such a young age, but I am so glad your pain and suffering is over now. Our video chat before you your death was something I will cherish.
