MICHAEL “MIKE” SILMAN
January 13, 1950 – May 5, 2025
Unexpectedly, on May 5th, 2025, Michael John Silman passed away at the age of 75 years.
He was predeceased by his parents, Peggy & Bob Sr.; brothers, Jim (Donna) and Gerry; nephews, Joe Jr. and Chris; and sister in-law Eve. He will be deeply missed by those left to cherish his memory including his son Ben (Rebecca); brothers, Bob (Sharon), Joe, Tom (Fay); sister in-law Lucia; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and a lifetime of many friends.
The third eldest of six boys from a military family, Mike looked up to his older brothers for guidance that he could, in turn, emulate to his younger brothers. Mike tried his hand at various types of work as a young man before settling into a long satisfying career with Canada Post as a letter carrier for most of his tenure until retirement in 2010.
When Mike wasn't pounding the pavement, he was very active making memories with family and friends, playing sports, travelling to destination sporting/concert events or gathering with his extended family for holiday and special occasions. He also took great interest in, and was rather skilled at, photography, picture framing, and custom card design.
Family was everything to Mike and he showed it through his unwavering efforts to acknowledge and celebrate special family events in person when possible, and if not by phone, but more importantly capturing memories by way of pictures or reflection at future gatherings.
Mike had a zeal for life and a desire to inject humour into all of his interactions with people. His cutting wit and sarcastic humour always set the tone for laughter in his company!
"Punky" will always be fondly remembered and loved greatly by those he left behind!
A private memorial service in his honour will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 23rd, 2025 at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg at 603 Wellington Crescent.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Diabetes Canada.
Mike’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

- My deepest condolences to the Silman family with the passing of Mike. In particular to Ben and I know Joe. This one hurts. I've known Mike in early days on the Air Base as teenagers, drinking in Woodhaven down by the creek and points in between in St. James. Jim and Gerry I knew very well as our paths crossed many times out west. Mike I noticed in his later years made a point of touching base with companions whom he hadn't seen in mamy years. I was one of those and was surprised and happy to see him. Friendship is a feeling and Mike defined that. God speed my friend.

Mike was a good guy and although I no longer live in Wpg we were in touch on Facebook and I enjoyed our interaction. I'm sure you will have a laugh in heaven looking down on us sinners. Cheers Mike!

Sorry for your loss. Mike had a great sense of humour and was a pleasure to work with. His stories and personality made it a pleasure to come to work. He'll be missed.

I enjoyed many interactions with Mike in past years. There were some early parties and yes his sense of humour was enjoyed. Perhaps best of all were our raquetball days with his good buddy Dan. I'll miss sending him jokes that prompted the occasional response.

The amazing childhood memories are too many to list. From his visits as Santa, to him welcoming Ben and his friends into his home with warmth and humour, Mike was an incredible presence in the neighbourhood. He was a wonderful man filled with laughs and generosity, and one of the best neighbours anyone could asked for. It had been too long between visits, we miss you Mike.

Oh geez , time waits for no one . Worked with Mike and we had this inside joke going ( not always politically correct ) . We'd exchange a glance and nod and a snicker . Good guy .

So sorry, Ben and family. Worked with Mike at Canada Post. We were "aisle mates". I also enjoyed his sarcastic jokes and the birthday lunches with Pat B, and Mike to celebrate our Jan. birthd

Sorry for your loss Ben. Many fond memories of time spent in and around the rinks with your dad. I used to see him at ball games now and again once hockey was over. Always had a kind word for my Mom (who I often had in tow) and a dig for me. Beauty.
