Blaine Silverthorne

BLAINE DOUGLAS SILVERTHORNE
January 9, 1933 – May 10, 2025
Peacefully, on May 10, 2025, Blaine died at the age of 92 at the Grace General Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Young); his beloved children, daughter Diane (Holly Penner); son David (Katherine Getz); as well his cherished grandchildren; Daniel and Elyse. Also surviving, sisters-in-law Lois and Helene Silverthorne and Judy Couture; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Blaine was predeceased by his parents, Al and Avis Silverthorne; his brother Terry and wife Marguerite; and his brother Gordon (Torch).
Blaine was born on January 9th, 1933, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Growing up in St. Vital, he went to school at Windsor School and St. Paul’s College on Ellice Avenue. He represented St. Paul’s on the Eaton’s Junior Executive Program which gave him a week-end job at the store in the sporting goods department and blocking and selling Fedora hats for gentlemen.
Blaine and Margaret were married in 1955 and resided on Lennox Avenue where their two children were born. Later, a move was made to Springside Drive where the children attended Windsor School, the same school that their father and uncles had gone to.
Blaine spent most of his working years at Dominion Malting Company in the Grain Exchange Building where he made many friends and colleagues throughout North America. He was very proud of his knowledge of beer and all the ingredients that make a good one.
At the same time, Blaine devoted 33 years of his life to The Boy Scouts Association having been a Scout himself, then a leader at the old Scout Shack in St. Vital. He would often recall the names of all the wonderful people he was associated with in Scouting. He led a troop at St. Mark’s Anglican Church and then was one of the original members of the Regional Training Team formed in 1971 and Assistant Regional Commissioner for Adult Training. He was the Co- Chairman of the Winnipeg Centennial Camporee and Past president of the St. Vital District.
Blaine was fortunate to have almost 37 years of retirement. After leaving Dominion Malting in 1988, Blaine and Margaret moved to the peaceful rural community of St. Malo. Not only did Blaine keep busy mowing grass and shovelling snow in their St. Malo home, but he also began to do woodcrafts which he sold at the many tearooms and craft stores in the area. He had a well-equipped workshop on the side of the garage where he spent a lot of his time.
Blaine and Margaret felt very lucky for the opportunities to travel to Israel and Egypt; Australia and Tasmania; Portugal and Madeira; as well as many Canadian provinces and American states. A five week back-packing trip to Britain in 2006 was a highlight in their lives.
Blaine and Margaret moved back to St. VitaI in 2010. His later years were spent reading and watching TV. Detective stories were his favourites and he watched every episode of Dr. Pohl and every CFL game on TV. He enjoyed attending The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Pops Concerts and was a season ticket holder of The Winnipeg Goldeyes for many years. He retained his sense of humour to the end and regaled one and all with his very bad, very old jokes.
Blaine is eternally grateful to his children and grandchildren for their love and support and would like to thank all who worked, played and laughed with him over the years. Many went the extra mile with unwavering support and true friendship.
At Blaine’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be a private Family burial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favourite charity.
Blaine’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

We're so very sorry to hear of Uncle Blaine's passing. Our hearts go out to you, Aunty Margaret, David, Diane and your families. Please know that we are thinking of you in this difficult time.
Uncle Blaine was a man with a terrific sense of humor and a dedicated member of the community. He will be missed, but fond memories of him on Springside will endure.

I knew the Silverthornes when they moved to Lennox Ave in St Vital. Both were devoted to Cubs and Scouts and many leaders and just plain good citizens of today benefitted from their fine role model.
Blaine was also the honcho for Lennox Avenue's annual Victoria Day fireworks display preceded by a weiner roast in the Murphy's backyard.
Lord Baden Powell the founder of Scouting once said "try to leave this world better than you found it." Blaine certainly did more than his share to make our world a better place. Our world needs more like him.

Skip taught me my sense of self worth and to have faith in who I am. I am one of hundreds of young boys that he lead and who use skills that Scouting teaches. Skip identified something in me as a young man that gave me a sense of pride and honour and the need to give back to the people around me. I went on to be a Scout leader and it's my greatest hope that I gave to my Scouts some of what Skip gave to me.
It has been 60 years since Skip made me a member of the 18th Winnipeg scout troupe and every minute of my time spent under his leadership is treasured.
Thanks Skipper

What a rich and rewarding life he had! Blaine worked with my dad, Doug Silk, and he and Margaret were good friends to my parents. I have many memories of the office shenanigans that he and my dad got up to. May you find comfort in your memories of him.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Silverthorne.
Always enjoyed talking with him when I was at the family home on Springside Drive and in St, Malo.
He took great pride in his wood working project.
Condolences to the entire family - his son David has been a great friend for 50 years. 🙏🙏
