JOHANNA CHRISTINE SIMPKIN

(née BRANDSON)

May 30, 1928 - February 26, 2022

With heavy hearts, we announce that Johanna passed away peacefully at the age of 93 years at Kildonan Personal Care Home.

Johanna was predeceased by her husband Kenneth in 1992. She is survived by her sons Terry (Patty) and Sandy, and her daughter Debbie (Bernie); grandchildren Jeremy, Courtney and Alexandra; and great-grandson, Mason.

Johanna was born and raised just outside of Lundar, Manitoba, the second daughter of four children. She lived there until moving to Winnipeg at the age of 19, where she met her husband Ken, whom she married in 1950. They resided in Elmwood where they raised their three children before eventually moving to North Kildonan in 1987.

Mom worked outside of the home for many years but was the happiest when she began her employment as a Nurses Aid at Holy Family Nursing Home in 1976. She enjoyed her work with the elderly very much until her retirement in 1993. After retirement she continued to do what she enjoyed most by volunteering at Kildonan Personal Care Home which she was able to continue until 2013.

Mom was very proud of her Icelandic heritage and loved telling stories from her childhood. She loved to cook and was an excellent baker. She loved to bake Icelandic brown bread and white bread and buns, but her cinnamon buns were so delicious the aroma attracted our neighbours! We all have wonderful memories of enjoying a scrumptious meal and dessert on many special occasions over the years. She also was an excellent knitter and loved to make everyone beautiful sweaters, scarves, mitts and her amazing Argyle socks. We are still enjoying her beautiful handiwork and will for many years to come. Her love of music brought her joy her entire life and she often played it loudly, while dancing to it happily! She was also a big Blue Bombers fan and really enjoyed listening to the games on the radio, particularly enjoying the play-by-play commentary by Bob Irving.

Although Mom’s energy slowed the last few years, she continued to enjoy listening to music, and visiting with her family. Johanna will be dearly missed by her children, grandchildren and great grandson.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Kildonan Personal Care Home for their compassionate care of Johanna for the past few years.

In Accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.

Johanna’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.
