LORRAINE SIMS

(née FARGEY)

August 21, 1933 - September 5, 2022

With family by her side, Mom peacefully passed away at the age of 89.    She was predeceased by her loving husband Lyall and her granddaughter Amy Cummine.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children Graeme (Terry), Glenna (James) Cummine, Jo-Anne Izatt, Gerry (Jennifer) and grandchildren Kate Izatt, Alex Izatt, MacKenzie and Kareena.

Lorraine was born in Winnipeg on August 21,1933.  She grew up in Cardale, Grosse Isle and Elkhorn, Manitoba.  Lorraine attended Normal School in 1953 where she received her teaching certificate.  She started her teaching career in St. James where she met her future husband Lyall Sims.  They bought their first home in River Heights where they raised their 4 children and enjoyed 40 years of married life together.

In the summer of 1960 mom and dad started building their summer cottage at Beaver Creek.  It was complete without any of the modern conveniences like electricity or indoor plumbing, all of which would come many years later.  After Lyall’s passing, Mom and her feline companion Cleo continued to enjoy many summers at the cabin.

Lorraine was an active member of the UCW at Oxford United Church until it closed its doors, at which time she then joined Harrow United Church.  If there was a Fall Supper, Rummage Sale or Bake Sale, you would find Mom there, helping out with whatever needed to be done.

Mom loved to garden, both in the backyard and at the lake.  She was an avid reader, mostly Harlequin Romance and Danielle Steele. She also enjoyed knitting and various needlepoint crafts.

The family would like to thank everyone at Tuxedo Villa, especially the staff on Unit 2 for the kindness, care and compassion they showed our mother.

All are welcome to join us for a graveside service to be held at 2:00 pm on September 17, 2022 at St. Michael’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Rd 72 Grosse Isle.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Harrow United Church (955 Mulvey Ave. Winnipeg, MB R3M 1G8), Cystic Fibrosis Canada ( 214 -175 Hargrave Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 3R8) or The Winnipeg Humane Society (45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3).

I won’t be far away, for life goes on;

So if you need me, call and I will come.

Though you can’t see me or touch me, I’ll be near

And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear

All of my love around you soft and clear.

I was so sorry to hear of Lorraine's passing.   At Oxford, I got to know your family through the turkey dinner (!) but many other things as well.  I loved talking with your grandmother Edna and often sat with her at worship.  For years now, Lorraine and I  have both been at Harrow United and often sat near each other on Sunday mornings, along with her friend Jean.  My condolences to all of you. I have wonderful memories of your Mom making me the most beautiful birthday cakes I had ever seen. One in particular was a basket full of flowers. I felt so special. She was truly generous and welcoming everytime I came over. My deepest sympathy to you Glenna and to your whole family.  Linda Gingera (Gray)

Lorraine and her family always made me and my family feel like a part of theirs. That is a testament to the way she and Lyall raised their kids. My memories of Lorraine will always bring a smile to my face as she was always quick to add wit and humor to our visits. Our prayers are with her loved ones, and we know she is in a better place at rest with peace.  Jennifer & Mike McDonald and family
