GEMMA PATRICIA SKELTON

September 6, 1969 – March 25, 2023

Surrounded by her family, Gemma Patricia Skelton, age 53, passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg on Saturday 25 March from cancer. The loss is tragic and immense. Gemma was a source of inspiration for all who had the pleasure of her company.

Gemma was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on 6 September 1969 to Marie (Coughlan) and Peter Skelton. She attended schools in England and in Canada before graduating (as Student President) from St. Boniface Diocesan High School in Winnipeg in 1987.  She went on to earn a Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba in 1991. Thereafter Gemma spent her working life as a dedicated educator at schools in England and Winnipeg, where she occupied the positions of teacher, counsellor, and (most recently) vice-principal at Fort Richmond Collegiate.

Gemma was fun-loving and adventurous. As a youth, on her own initiative she kindly organized activities with her siblings and neighborhood friends, including theatrical performances and summer daytrips. It was no surprise that she soon became the babysitter of choice for local families, and that by her early teens she was running a small babysitting enterprise. Always active, Gemma qualified as a lifeguard and swimming instructor in the mid 1980s, working for many years at Pan Am Pool, where she made several lifelong friends and acquaintances. After graduating from university, Gemma moved to England for work, got married and had two children, Niall and Patrick, of whom she was an engaged and proud parent. She returned to Winnipeg permanently in 1999 to be closer to her family and to advance her career.

Gemma had an abiding curiosity about what the world had to offer. She was an avid traveler, visiting an impressive range of countries in her life for both pleasure and work, including Brazil, China, Ethiopia, France, Greece, Holland, India, Ireland, Mexico, and (her favorites) Barbados and St. Lucia. Together with Niall and Patrick, Gemma spent numerous summer holidays visiting friends and family in Europe, in the process introducing her children to the benefits and joys of travel and new experiences. Gemma’s approach to travel, as to life, involved striving to expand her horizons, with few plans deemed too ambitious.

Gemma was a life-long music enthusiast and lover of pop music, her most recent favorites included Ed Sheeran and Harry Styles. Her greatest pleasures included celebrating her birthday “week” with epic parties, picking apples in her back garden, hanging out with friends at sporting events and (like a true Winnipegger) at house parties, and decorating her house, inside and out, with lights, especially during the Christmas season. She had a positive outlook on life and maintained a large network of friends. Gemma also loved the outdoors, devoting her time to swimming, biking, and being out on a lake.

In 2017, Gemma met Brad Morton, the true love of her life, and together they fabricated a happy friendship and full life together. They enjoyed cheering on the Jets and the Bombers, seeing live music, and soaking in their hot tub. Naturally, Gemma and Brad soon began to travel to places far flung, where they walked and talked, biked and hiked. One of Gemma’s happiest places was the cottage she shared with Brad on Black Sturgeon Lake north of Kenora, Ontario, where they had many friendships and routinely hosted events and celebrated special occasions with family and friends. The pleasures she enjoyed at her cottage sustained her during her illness, which she faced with courage and equanimity.

As in life, in the face of death Gemma was a model for all those around her. She will forever be missed by her family and friends. Her loved ones are grateful to the physicians, nurses, and support staff at the Health Sciences Centre, Section of Neurosurgery, Cancer Care Manitoba, and Riverview Health Centre who cared for Gemma during her illness.

In addition to her husband Brad, her children Niall and Patrick, and her parents Marie and Peter, Gemma leaves behind her stepchildren, Vanessa and Zach; her siblings, Anthony and Niamh (Robert); her nephews, Ben, James, Jack and Rhys; and many friends, relatives, and co-workers.

A memorial service for Gemma will be held at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church (255 Stafford Street, Winnipeg, MB). Following the service, a celebration of Gemma’s life will be held at the Caboto Centre (1055 Wilkes Ave., Winnipeg, MB).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Gemma’s name to FortWhyte Alive and Assiniboine Park Conservancy.

Gemma’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

We, Margaret and Darryl, send our deepest condolences to Brad, Niall, Patrick and all of Gemma's family and friends.   We feel the loss of Gemma, a true gem of a friend we have known for 30 years. She embraced life to the fullest, whether it was travel, work, sports, leadership, or student's voice. She was a beautiful, kind-hearted friend and will forever be in our hearts. Gemma brought joy, laughter, and deep commitment to our book club community for a decade. Gemma persevered alongside her students, colleagues and admin communities – even in the face of challenges during the Pandemic. She impacted numerous people along her education journey.   Gemma built a wealth of notable accomplishments and richly rewarding experiences. She had fun and knew how to create joy for others. Gemma was a nurturing leader who listened and inspired others to lean in and be curious. She lived life to the fullest and gave her all to everything she cared about, including Earth Day.  She often shared, "I'm living for today because every day is a gift." The things that mattered most to Gemma were being with family, and friends, travelling, and entertaining at the lake with her husband, Brad. Even though Gemma is gone, her love will carry on. She touched our hearts with the love of travel, friends, family, and sports anecdotes. Often, she would reminisce about the beautiful memories made on those trips. Gemma had a way of making people feel welcomed and valued.  Losing one of our best friends is one of the most heartbreaking experiences we have gone through together. Yet we've never been more inspired than watching how bravely and valiantly she fought her cancer while continuing to live her best life. Her genuine kindness would always shine through. More than anything else, she loved being a mom to her two sons, Niall and Patrick. They both respected and admired their mom's courage to experience 'life is beautiful.' We had many great times together. We will miss her, whether it was our trip to Italy, family birthdays with the traditional 'smartie cake,' the girls' wanna-have fun get-togethers, or the Winnipeg Jets and Bomber Games with Brad. The lovely video of her life and picture captures a snapshot of her zest for life. Her radiant smile and resilience to live life to the fullest are a model for all of us to remember. We will not forget Gemma at the sun's rising, or its setting. We will remember her. ❤ Love Margaret Murray & Darryl van Herksen "We keep this love in a photograph We made these memories for ourselves Where our eyes are never closing Hearts are never broken And time's forever frozen, still." _Ed Sheeran

We were so surprised to hear of Gemma’s passing. Ms. Skelton was the vice principal at both of our boys’ schools. She was our go to person for the Brazilian exchange at Bairdmore School, and was there to see our eldest graduate from Fort Richmond Collegiate - even taking time to say hello to me at 2 am when I picked him up from SafeGrad! We are so sorry for your loss, but glad to have known her 🥰

Gemma was just the best educator and person.  She truly cared about students and went that extra mile for those that needed her the most.  As a colleague, she was fun, hard-working, and very wise.  "Approach with curiosity," she would say during challenging times and she was absolutely right.   We worked together most recently at Fort Richmond Collegiate and before that at Ralph Maybank School, and in both settings she was calm and caring with everyone around her.   I learned many things from observing Gemma as an educator and I also observed her to be a kind and dedicated mother, wife, sister, daughter, and friend.  We spent many hours together over the years, and I'm really going to miss her.  Gemma made a positive impact on so many people, young and old, and we are lucky to have known her.

Knowing how deeply Gemma cared for all others in her professional life gives me an idea of what a huge hole she leaves in the hearts of her family and close friends. What I will remember most is the grace and courage she showed when given the worst news a person can hear about their health. Right to our last interaction she remained concerned and interested about others. Her beautiful smile and spirit will not be soon forgotten. ❤

I had the privilege to first  meet and know Gemma in her role as vice-principal of Bairdmore School and in my Healthy Child capacity as we partner with elementary schools to support incoming students and later in my role as a trustee and her role at FRC vice -principal.  As in her picture she always had a warm smile and welcoming greeting for everyone. She went above and beyond to support all students. Her dedication and strong work ethic was noted. She truly cared and it showed. Her imprint on Education will hold strong in memory and model. This beautiful life was cut short far too early. My heart goes out to her family as they journey in navigating such a tremendous loss.My sincerest condolences, Cindy Nachtigall

Lynne and I send our heartfelt condolences to Brad and Gemma’s family. We were heartbroken to hear of Gemma’s passing. Gemma was one of the most intelligent persons that I had the pleasure of working with. She was a fantastic listener and we would often have invigorating conversations about what was best for the children we both worked with at Bairdmore. She always kept the best interests of the children in mind and I have a deep respect for her caring spirit. Even though we were simply work colleagues, I will miss her deeply. Wishing you all  peace and strength during what must be one of the most difficult times of your lives. Doug & Lynne Jonasson
