FORTUNE LYNN SMITH

(née FISHER)

August 13, 1952 - May 30, 2023

Fortune Lynn Smith (née Fisher) was born August 13, 1952 and passed away suddenly at home on May 30, 2023, age 71 years.

Fortune was pre-deceased by her mother Elizabeth; her brother Clay; sister-in-law Cindy; and brother-in-law Bob. She leaves behind her husband Gary; sons, Shaun and Shane (Mardene); grandchildren, Dalton (Karleigh), Bryce (Brandi), and Kaylee (Devan); and great-grandchildren, Leighton, Cooper, and Sage. She is survived by her siblings, Lorne (Susan), Milo, Miles, Candy (Zoltan), Robin, Rory (Kim), Holly, and Monica. She also leaves behind many other family including nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly. All those who knew Fortune will remember her fondly.

Fortune, also known as Dee to many around her, grew up surrounded by her brothers and sisters who remember her and their memories together fondly whether it was picking berries, roller skating, camping, and playing crib with their mother.

Fortune was always dedicated to her family. After Fortune married Gary April 10, 1971, she became a stay-at-home mother to Shaun and soon after to Shane as well. Throughout the years, she loved playing bingo, tending to her beautiful flowers each year, and loved canning and making jams to give to friends and family, though she could never give away the grape jelly as that was made special for Gary. Fortune was also known to make the best garden salad in the family.

Fortune and Gary had many dogs over the years, and Fortune treated each one as another member of the family. Fortune was very proud of her grandchildren and great-nieces and nephews. She always made sure they had crafts and games when they came to visit, she loved to be able to share her love of art with them. When they got older, she cheered them on through life, sharing their achievements with anyone who would listen. She was very proud that she got to watch her grand-children grow into young adults with families of their own.

All those who knew Fortune would remember her kindness towards everyone around her. She often spent time volunteering at Army, Navy, and Air Force Veterans Club 60. She easily made friends wherever she went, whether that be at the coffee shop, volunteering, at church, and even on Facebook games, and would chat with anyone who would sit and listen.

Fortune faced many health challenges over the years but always came back stronger. She was a determined (and sometimes stubborn!) woman who never let her health issues slow her down and prevent her from enjoying life. Throughout her life and especially through the last several years, Gary was always by her side caring for her.

Fortune will be missed dearly by everyone who knew her.

A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at 2pm on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy (Unitarian Church).

Fortune’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I was shocked to read about Fortune;s passing. My sincere condolences to Garry, Shaun and Shane and their families. I have often tried to get ahold of you guys, with no luck. Without a lie, your family were the best that came in ,my store. You and Fortune were always so nice and I enjoyed talking with you. Your kids were so polite and well behaved. I was so happy to have run into you at you know where and then due to a bad decision beyond our control I didn't get to see you again' I am so sorry that happened and we lost contact. Fortune was a wonderful wife and mother and loved all her family, kids and grandkids. She will me truly missed by so many' I will try my best to get there on the 6th but if not, just know I will be thinking about you as you go through this. Kindest regards, Larry Ober
