GEORGE ALEXANDER SMITH
April 29, 1943 – February 1, 2025
George was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, son, brother, uncle and friend, always ready with a joke or suggestion of how to make things better. His kindness, sense of humour and thoughtfulness will remain a cherished memory to his wife Diane; children, Cassandra (Marshall) and Don (Kerry); and grandchildren, Keyara (Carson) and Brady.
Born in 1943 to George Sr. and Elsie Smith, he along with his sister Evelyn grew up in Winnipeg where he graduated from the University of Manitoba with an MBA. The U of M played an important role in George’s life - that’s where he met his future wife Diane and worked in Continuing Education until his retirement in 2004.
George and Diane made their home in Winnipeg, where he was a loving and generous father, supporting his kids’ many sporting activities with countless hours spent driving them around, patiently helping with homework, planning summer camping trips in a beloved but unreliable VW Camper Van, fixing bicycles for resale, tackling home renovations and repairs, and being an all-around good guy. Diane and George enjoyed many travel adventures and fun times with their great friends Sandra and Bob Raeburn, and hosting annual Grey Cup parties for their Fort Richmond friends. Most importantly, George found his best friend and soulmate in Diane with whom he shared all of life’s adventures.
George’s wish was to be cremated and for his life to be celebrated with immediate family. You can honour George by sharing a funny story or telling a joke to spread happiness and bring joy.
In lieu of flowers, you may consider donating to the Manitoba Lung Association or a charity that has meaning to you.
George’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Condolences to all. Fond Memories of our time with Smiths and Pentlands. We saw George do a backflip at Pentlands in Vancouver, he put a friendly headlock on a Doctor at Jeff and Astrid's Wedding. Steph still talks about that one as the Doctor said please remove my head from your grasp. The next day at Airport I wasnt feeling very good (too much Cheer) and my Sunglasses were dangling akwardly from my head as George and Diane walked towards us and George blurted out "you look as shitty as I feel". George was a fun guy.

Uncle George, your smile and fierce love for family continue to shine. May you enjoy a drink around a campfire with loved ones, friends, and a (functioning) VW camper bus. Thank you for being an important part of a childhood of great memories.

George was always "Georgie" to us, a fun loving older cousin who gave us younger ones some attention. And he also gave us something we absolutely treasured: his cardboard box filled with comic books, dozens of them. He was
moving on to other interests, but that gift set up my sister, brother and me for hours of reading, and trading comics for the rest of our childhoods. I've never for that generous gift.
Families spread out, grow apart, move away and lose touch. But we do remember the good family times.
My family and I send our love and deepest condolences to Diane and all the family on their loss of George.
May his memory be a blessing.

I'm so very sorry to hear about the passing of my cousin George. Growing up, no one had a nicer big cousin. When most big kids and teenagers would see us younger kids as pests and boring, cousin Georgie was never anything but kind and fun. Later, when I was attending UofM, I used to pop in on him in his office occasionally and he was always lovely and ready for a chat. I'm sorry to have lost contact after moving away from Winnipeg, but I'll always retain warm memories of George. To Diane and his family, I send love and the deepest condolences.

George was an amazing uncle. He was dependably present as a happy, kind, caring and staunch guide and supporter. I have many happy memories of times with Uncle George across many years - including family gatherings, birthdays, Christmases, and seemingly endless summers at the Beach. He instilled knowledge and values with a sense of humour and fun (and just the right amount of mischievousness from nephew’s perspective). He is fondly remembered and profoundly missed.

We were neighbours with George & Diane on St. Edmund's Bay, and were fortunate that we were invited to their home for the annaul Grey Cup games continuously for many many years, and we were extremely thankful for their all out hospitality serving Diane's gourmet home cooked food and George's hefty drinks. We were also entertained by George's quick wit, humour and jokes, we had countless good time there indeed!
We did not just lost a neighbour friend, but genuinely truly a good friend.
