LINDA IRENE SMRDELJ

(née Peck)

July 14, 1953 – June 21, 2025

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Linda Smrdelj on June 21, 2025 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Peter; sister, Beverly (Douglas); nephew, David (Gracie); niece, Alyson; aunt, Shirley; sisters in-law, Marte (David) and Frankie (Wayne); special friends Margaret, Deborah, Wendy, Glenn, and Mike; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Donald and Irene Peck.

Linda was born in Minnedosa, Manitoba on July 14, 1953 and raised on the family farm near Clanwilliam. After completing high school, she moved to Winnipeg to begin nurse’s training at the Winnipeg General Hospital. Upon graduation in 1973, she worked nights in the nursery at Women’s Hospital for 8 years. There, she met her future husband, Peter, and her best friend, Margaret. Linda and Peter were married in 1976 and resided in River Heights.

Linda possessed an acute intellect and was intrigued by the relatively new field of fetal ultrasound. After further training, she began a 30-year career in Fetal Assessment at St. Boniface Hospital. In addition to seeing patients in the unit, she was part of the Manitoba Obstetrical Outreach Program which enabled her to meet health care professionals and work with pregnant women across the province. In fact, her fondest memories were of the people she met on those travels especially in the Indigenous communities in northern Manitoba. Linda’s tireless work ethic, attention to detail, and compassionate nature endeared her to her patients, many of whom kept in contact with her for years. But probably the single thing that set Linda apart was her incredible sense of humour.

From a young age, Linda brightened every room she entered. Quick-witted, always eager to smile and laugh, and ready with a joke, she knew how to put people at ease and make them feel good about themselves. Linda loved a good party and whether she was in the unit organizing a special event or entertaining in her home, her guests were assured fantastic food, lively conversations, and endless laughs. Even during these last months when life was so challenging, she tried hard to smile and thank everyone on a daily basis.

Take hold of your life

Like a bird on a wing

Lift up your heart

And allow it to sing

So sorry to read of Linda's passing. She was a dedicated member of the Fetal Assessment Unit at St. Boniface Hospital. Linda provided professional and supportive care to pregnant women in Winnipeg and through the Manitoba Obsetrical Outreach Program. She had a quirky sense of humour and a most infectious laugh.

Remembering the good times with Linda and Dr. McCarthy. We always got the job done but had fun. May they rest in peace.
