HUGUETTE ROSE SNODGRASS

November 16, 1946 – November 4, 2020

With heavy hearts, we announce that Huguette passed away on November 4, 2020, in her home, at 74 years young.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Don; daughters Jennifer (Peter) and Christine (Jeff); grandchildren Molly, Evan and Aidan; sisters Lilianne, and Gilberte; brothers Jean and Roger; as well as countless cousins, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her granddaughter Emma; and siblings Pauline, Guy and Gilles.

Mom passed away at home, surrounded by her family. Lung cancer left its mark on her life and she can finally rest after a difficult seven months.

Daughter of Lionel and Jeanne D’Arc Arsenault, Huguette grew up in Iroquois Falls in Northern Ontario. Despite leaving the region after high school, she always felt an affinity for her native hometown. She moved to Ottawa to work for the Federal Government where she would meet her future husband. After marrying there in 1967, she and Don moved to Calgary for a short time and then on to Winnipeg where she remained until her death.

Loved fiercely by Don, Mom and Dad’s 53-year marriage is a testament to the power of commitment and devotion. They shared highs and lows but never lost sight of each other. The legacy of their relationship is the foundation of our family. The powerful lessons learned from their example will shape and guide those of us willing to learn.

We always knew how much mom loved us, her two daughters. We were her first concern, and we knew that from a young age. Mom could always be counted on to go to bat for us. Whether it was school or health related, we knew she was there to support us. We knew what trust and dependability meant and that was the bedrock of our happy childhoods.

Her grandkids were a source of continued pride. An unapologetic braggadocio, Mom always knew what the grandkids were up to. She knew schedules for activities, scores from hockey and soccer games, who they were hanging out with and pretty much everything about them. And she was never shy about telling us if she thought we were doing the wrong thing by letting them go to the mall or that they were staying out too late. All three of them will miss her greatly.

Mom is passing on the understanding that there must always be time for coffee and cake. She loved nothing better than to sit and visit, “on va jaser”. Mom could pass hours with anyone who wanted to share a table with her, strangers were welcome too if they were willing to bend an ear. Hopefully she’s sitting at a Tim’s now, gossiping with her predeceased siblings…. this would be her version of heaven.

Mom was an unapparelled cook. Her skill in the kitchen left friends and family with many food related memories and tighter pants. Mom was always cooking and was never satisfied until everyone was full to overflowing. Holidays were a time to feast and we know that this year Christmas will be a pale shade of years gone by. Her tourtiere, ragu and sugar pie will be missed as will all the squares, tarts and cookies that filled multiple freezers every year.

Mom’s passion for fine things was also inspiring. As an interior designer, mom was able to indulge her love of creating interesting spaces. Mom expressed her love by buying nice things, especially at Christmas. Each present had to be perfectly wrapped and the season was not complete unless the tree was buried under a mountain of gifts. Friends and family have all been on the receiving end of mom’s boundless generosity and thoughtfulness, she loved nothing more than to shower people with quality gifts.

Mom will be missed.

A celebration of Mom’s life will be held at a later date, when we are safely able to come together. In the meantime, Huguette’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

There are those, in our lives, that we think are invincible. For me Aunty Huguette was  high on that list. I cannot believe that she is gone.  I have lots of memories from the year I lived with you.  I remember how she always disappeared after supper was over!  I always assumed that doing dishes was not her thing. And I remember the time she took me out - probably trying to get me a life!  We went to a restaurant that was full of Winnipeg Blue Bombers. I clearly remember them trying to hit on her, which I am sure was the opposite of what she hoped the outcome would be!  And I clearly remember the look on her face the day I finally figured out how old she was, but she recovered quickly and with a straight face  told me I was wrong!  I remember the coke (it was coke, not pepsi, correct)?  So much of it.  I remember how beautiful your home was and that darned carpet that I ruined.  And I remember that she was as patient with me as she could be - must have been real trying for her.  I remember that she did not suffer fools gladly and as a result was a bit terrified of saying anything to her as she was sure to correct me.  Your loss is our loss and I am so sorry.  She was way too young.

What a great write up on your mom.  I am so sorry for your loss. Condolences to the whole family.  She was such a nice, genuine down to earth lady.  At the company Christmas party last year, she chatted with us about Europe trip and the Dos and Don'ts even though it is the first time I ever talk to her.  She makes all of us at the table at ease and comfortable.  Classy lady.  She will be missed.  RIP Mrs Snodgrass ❤❤

I am so heartbroken for you all. So many wonderful memories of your mom - Friday night Sushi chats, good political debates, and she was always game to help me practice my French. Sending your entire family our love.

To me Auntie Huguette simply commanded your attention by just walking into the room. You always knew her voice because it so distinctly her. She always made me laugh. But when little, you knew you better listen to her because she did not put up with shenanigans. Auntie Huguette was a great person. Love to Uncle Donald and family.

So very sorry to hear about your Mom. I have many memories of her from playing in your yard or at your cottage when we were growing up. She was always around making sure we weren't getting into trouble! When I managed Le Beaujolais, your parents would come in for lunch "dates" and we would have chats and catch up on our lives. You could see the love they had for each other for carving out that special time during the work day. Hold onto your precious memories and take comfort that she is at peace now.

I was so sorry to hear of Huguette's passing. I spent years up at her studio, painting, but mainly talking of family and life. We also had great memories of painting in Greece with Don as well along for the trip. I will reminisce about all the paintings we struggled with,  and all the laughter and great music we listened to while painting.  A grand lady who will certainly be missed, but hopefully is playing with Emma in heaven.

Beautiful stories about Huguette. We are so sorry Don, Jennifer and Christine. I remember years ago when Amy and I moved back to Canada and Huguette & Don invited us to spend a night with them in their home. It was so nice to sit and visit and have a home cooked meal with family! Take care.
