ERICA SOMMER

Aug. 11, 1944 – Nov. 4, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Erica Sommer (née Martel) of Winnipeg, formerly of Rosenfeld and Altona, on November 4, 2024, after a short battle with cancer.

Erica is survived by daughters, Lisa (Jon), Krista (Chris), and Rachel (Stuart); and grandchildren, Noah, Heath, Piper, and Finn. Erica was predeceased by her husband John; parents, Otto and Leokadia Martel; and brother Heinz Martel.

Born in Poland, Erica immigrated with her family to Rosenfeld, Manitoba in 1948. After graduating high school, she attended teachers’ college and spent most of her much-loved career at Rosenfeld Elementary School.

She enjoyed cooking for her family (especially buns and blintzes), playing cards, gardening, quilting with the Heritage Quilters in Altona and watching the Jays, Jets and Bombers. In retirement, Erica enjoyed time in Arizona and at the cottage at LacLu.

Erica will be forever loved and remembered.

In lieu of flowers, Erica requested you carry out an act of kindness toward others or donate to Grace Hospice in her memory.

Erica’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I am deeply saddened by Erica's passing. She was an exceptional woman. Whenever I reflect on someone in my life who showed kindness, Erica is always the person who comes to mind. Even at a young age, she made a difference in my life.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Rachel, Krista, and Lisa. I have such fond memories of playing on your parents' farm, especially with Rachel. I love you all and am keeping you in my thoughts during this difficult time.

My condolences to Krista, Lisa and Rachel on the passing of your mother. She was a dear friend and I got to know her as a parent of one of my students, Krista. Her smiling face shows who she was. May the many memories you created together bring you peace and joy.

My thoughts are with Rachel, Krista, Lisa and the rest of Erica's extended family. I didn't know Erica personally but she must have been a wonderful mother because my good friend, her daughter Rachel, is incredibly thoughtful, generous and kind. Sending so much love to you all as you navigate the end of a very difficult year.xxx

All our thoughts and prayers are with you and share with all the family.

No doubt that they both will find a place in Heaven.

Erica and john were an extraordinary couple , very peaceful and welcoming.

They helped me so much for the settlement in Canada that led further to our family.

Great memories from John & Erica on the farm and that wonderful community in Rosenfeld.

My sincere condolences to the whole family. I was lucky to experience her hospitality on several visits to Altona, playing cards and enjoying her home cooking. She was a caring and generous person, and I see this same spirit in her three daughters. I am so sorry for your loss.

I didnt know Erica but I am lucky enough to know her amazing daughter, Rachel. I am sure Erica was so very proud of the daughters she raised and the kind of people they are is a reflection of the amazing mum that she must have been. After such an awful struggle, I hope Erica is now at peace and that can give you all comfort, Rachel, Krista and Lisa. Sending love xx

I had the pleasure of teaching with Erica at Rosenfeld Elementary. Erica was soft spoken, and her students respected her as an adult who had their best interests at heart. Erica was a great positive ambassador for Manitoba's school teachers! Erica will be missed!

So saddened to hear of your loss. Not only did my children have the privilege of being taught by Mrs Sommers but I also had the honour of working with her at Rosenfeld Ekementary. Erica was always upbeat and kind hearted. In later years my son Stephen and I had the pleasure of taking dance classes with John and Erica. Stephen and I spent many a happy hour practicing with John and Erica in their home in Altona. Shine on Erica and John. 💙❤️
