NORMAN (NORM) SPARROW

September 22, 1946 - July 16, 2021

Suddenly on July 16, 2021, Norman Bruce Sparrow passed away in the Tuxedo Villa Personal Care Home.

Norm is survived by his wife Linda and son Scott, mother-in-law Dorothy McMillin, sisters, Pat McCorriston and Linda Haug (Bob); aunt Bernice Sparrow; as well as nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by parents, Nora and Lewis (Bus) Sparrow; father-in-law Rod McMillin; and brother-in-law Dave McCorriston.

Norm was born on September 22, 1946 in Winnipeg. He attended Rockwood School, River Heights and Grant Park High School where he played basketball and football. He joined the neighbourhood boys for hockey at Crescentwood Community Club. Norm sang with the Winnipeg Boys Choir a trait that carried on with the “shrimp night” sing a longs in Puerto Vallarta. He loved tinkering with clocks and radios as a young boy and later working on cars with his Dad. His pride and joy was his Austin Healey an amusing choice of vehicles for a 6ft 5 in man.

Norm spent his summers as a young boy in Souris with the Smith family farming where clearly the fertilizer had an effect on his growth as well as the crops, growing 6 inches one summer! He made a great friend Les Smith during these times and kept in touch with Les and his family until he passed.

Norm joined the Winnipeg Police Force at the age of 21 and was soon joined by his best friend Ross (Rocky) McCorriston and retired 26 years later this was a career Norm loved. He participated in the Jackson Mississippi International Police Combat Shoot he was a Master Class hand gun shooter. Following his retirement Norm became our “go to guy”, he could build or fix pretty much anything and was always there to help others with their projects.

Norms pride and joy was his wife Linda and son Scott, they travelled and enjoyed many summers in the backyard pool on Elm Street.  The Elm Street step parties were often in his yard well pretty much any party was in his house or yard. Memorable New Years parties of patrons marching down the street parading in and out of many houses  in -30 degree weather with bagpipes, pots and pans and drums celebrating

Norm suffered a number of health issues but in spite of them he managed to travel from coast to coast and up to the Yukon and the Northwest Territories.  He would spend a good part of winter at Girasol in Puerto Vallarta where he met so many good and permanent friends who will all miss him, his laugh and yes his slapping of his leg.

The family would like to thank the staff at Tuxedo Villa with special thanks to staff on station 2.

In keeping with Norm’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Instead, Norm’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to a children’s charity of your choice.

When I was a Winnipeg Police Sergeant, Norm Sparrow was my Patrol Sergeant for a number of years.  We were both woodworkers as a hobby.   Norm was into more commercial  carpentry  and I made pictures out of wood.    Norm would joke with me saying he was a hammer and nail carpenter and couldn't get his big   hands to do what I did.    Having seen his carpentry work over the years he was indeed a professional.     I visited him often at Tuxedo Villa and it was always a joyous occasion.    Having met Linda and Scot I offer my sincere condolences.   Great to have known you "BIG BIRD' Rest easy.

Sad to hear of Norm's passing. I just recently shared a story with Sarah about dragging Norm along when I purchased my car 24  years ago. Being female and admittedly not car smart, his presence, as well as his car knowledge worked well for me! Many fond Elm Street memories of Norm - the organizer, the helpmate, good-natured, friendly and welcoming....  Our heartfelt condolences to Linda and Scott. Shirley, Josh, Sarah Hampton

I worked with Norm at the Winnipeg Police Service and we were on the Board of the Winnipeg Police Association together for many years.... Norm was a steading force on the Board a great go to guy for those that needed advice about anything and always with a down to earth tell it like it is attitude......great smile  and laugh and you also knew where you stood with him.....good memories of 2 weeks in Ottawa at the Police College and a memorable trip to Montreal to see the Expos play.....he yelled at me at the WPA after I had put some hot pizzas still in their boxes on the wood table he had just finished restoring and they ruined the finish.....he then called me back after I walked away and said it's okay but give your head a shake !........Rest in Peace Norm......

Norm was my best childhood friend and in spite of the distance we have always remained in close contact and a loyal friend. Norm spent summers with us on my parents' farm since about 1955. Norm's Dad and my uncle Ernie became close friends on their way overseas in WW2 and kept in contact with each other. Later since Norm had some minor health problems as a young boy, he came to spend a few weeks in the country with my bachelor uncle who farmed near my family. One of his first meals was a ham sandwich with my uncle's home-made hot mustard. Norm smothered the ham in it. What a surprise when he took a big bite of it!! As a result my uncle asked if Norm could come to stay with us for a few days. We immediately became friends and we spent the rest of the summer together. After that Norm spent his summers with us on my parents' farm and I came to the big city of Winnipeg to visit him during Christmas and Easter holidays. Those summer days were filled with making and firing home made rockets, arrows made of wood shingles that could reach hundreds of feet in the air, and making giant kites that we flew at night with lights on them, making a neighbour think the aliens had arrived! Lots of other scientific experiments!! Late evenings were spent on the roof of a small cattle shed watching the stars, meteors, and wondering about our futures. Norm had his first Saskatoon pie that first summer and it remained his favourite desert for the rest of his life!  We truly became like brothers. Norm's life was very difficult in the last year or so with the Covid restrictions but we could  still talk often by telephone. He so missed the personal visits of you, Linda, and his sisters Pat and Linda, as well as his son Scott, but he so appreciated your incredible support in spite of the circumstances. He also talked of how greatly he missed the visits of his fellow officers who had been so supporting of him before the Covid disaster. You all meant so much to him! We have all lost a true friend, a great human being. We send you our sympathy Linda, the love of his life, and to Pat and Linda his sisters who have provided such support, to Scott, who must miss his Father greatly, and to all the friends that he has known and helped over the years. Norm, you will be greatly missed, but you contributed more to all of us with your smile and understanding than you can even imagine. It is difficult to write this as my tears obstruct my eyes but RIP my best friend and my brother!   Les Smith and your friend-in-law Aline Ste-Therese, Quebec

What an amazing guy Norm was. My memories of him are mostly from childhood. He was a wonderful older cousin, and seemed so wise and cool to the us younger pack of cousins milling around. Our paths diverged in later years. But whenever we did cross paths, it was wonderful to see him.I know he will be much missed. Our deepest condolences to Linda and Scott.

"Give your head a shake Jim" usually I heard a lot. "Not necessarily" was basically the end to a disagreement. What a time we had together. I'm sure the woods still echo from our moose hunts with him riding the runners of the trappers sleigh behind the snowmobile as we hit the open water that I'd assured him wasn't there.."You asshole." We had so many memorable times, working, shooting, hunting and being there when Scott became the second man in Linda' s life. Time really moves on but the memories made never do. We're going to miss you Norm.

Linda & Scott, it has been awhile since we have seen you.   I think it was Dave and Laura's gathering in PV!  It was great to see "Uncle" Norm, Linda and Scott.   Norm was a great brother-in-law.  He like "Uncle" Dave thought my abilities as a handy man were totally non-existent.  Thank the guy upstairs that he was around when we were building the rec-room on Waverley Street.  My first attempt at hanging a suspended ceiling ended up on the floor, but Norm came to our rescue along with Dave to finish our room.  It was always a great time when visiting Elm Street!  The "Winter Wild Life" BBQ's and going to the POOL!  I figured I would help Norm with his roofing job on his house on Elm Street.   He was always there for us so it was pay back time and I arrived early in the morning with my hammer.  Norm looked afraid that the handy-man brother in law was going to attempt to climb the ladder to the roof.  Well I made it up but was not really sure what I was going to do.  I was wearing running shoes and I started to slide down.  So, Norm thought the best thing for Bruce was to NAIL HIS JEANS to the roof so I could not injure myself or fall into the pool.  It was very funny day on Elm Street, the roof was completed and I became a better handy man.  Thanks Norm Sparrow for the many Great Memories from River Heights!   Keep well Linda & Scott    Best Regards, Bruce & Greg from Mount Pearl Newfoundland & Labrador
