Greg Steeves
GREGORY “GREG” MILES STEEVES
November 19, 1959 – October 4, 2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Greg on Oct. 4, 2024 after a long battle with cancer.
Greg was born on Nov. 19, 1959 in Montreal, the oldest of four children born to Doug and Janet (Bair) Steeves.
The family relocated to Brandon in 1966, and Greg attended Valleyview school in the first year it opened & then went on to Vincent Massey and Killarney high schools. Greg AKA “Good job” was a natural athlete who spent countless hours at the local rinks, basketball courts, on the slopes and riding his bike. His favourite sport though was golf and he had a lot of success on the course, from winning high school championships to competing at the Canadian Junior Nationals. He enjoyed golfing right up until his final days.
His young adult years were full of adventure, from college in California to Thunder Bay to ranch life in Montana, but he eventually returned to Brandon. He loved a good meal and enjoyed working in the restaurant industry before joining his dad in helping families set up RESP plans. In recent years, he channeled his curiosity into hosting an interview show called “Of Interest to You” on WCGTV. He became the statistician of the Massey Vikings football team, supporting his brother Mike (head coach) & providing tons of encouragement to the players.
Greg was predeceased by his dad Doug; mom Janet; and sister Tracey. He is survived by sister Melanie (Gene) Guentert and brother Mike (Jil Simmons); as well as his nieces and nephews, Adam (Ashley) Moore, Megan (Todd) Newell and family, Eric Guentert, Georgia Steeves and Sam Steeves.
A celebration of Greg’s life will take place at 2:00pm on Nov. 8th at Knox United Church located at 451 18th St Brandon.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Brandon School Division Friends of Education Football Fund or Cancer Care Manitoba.
"Folk call the road lonely, because there is not human traffic and human stirring. Because I have walked it so many times and seen such a tumult of life there, it seems to me one of the most populous highways of my acquaintance. I have walked it in ecstasy, and in joy it is beloved. Every pine tree, every gall-berry bush, every passion vine, every joree rustling in the undergrowth, is vibrant. I have walked it in trouble, and the wind in the trees beside me is easing. I have walked it in despair, and the red of the sunset is my own blood dissolving into the night’s darkness. For all such things were on earth before us, and will survive after us, and it is given to us to join ourselves with them and to be comforted."
- Cross Creek (Preface) by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

I attended Greg's service yesterday. It was a great tribute to this individual. I first met Greg sitting in a dressing in the Manex area . I had decided I would try out for the midget or bantam little Wheat Kings Hockey team . I was late for the practice and found myself alone in the dressing room with Greg .
I was from the Linden Lanes area and hung around Westridge community center and i knew Greg was from the Valley View area . I was definitely an outsider as most of the kids trying out were from the Vincent Massey / Valley view area .
All the kids werenare on the ice , this is the third tryout practice , because I had to walk to the rink I was tired and late . As I nervously hurried to get dressed Greg walked back into the dressing , not sure why , but it was just him and I . Now Greg was a great hockey player and was basically already on the team .
Greg starts a conversation with me , didn't expect that , after all we are grade 8 ers from different areas of the city. He askes me how it's going ? I tell him that it's been fun but I think I will probably get cut after this practice . He offers me encouragement with this reply ... " don't be so sure , you're doing a good job " , so hang in there .
That was Greg . Kind and friendly to a kid from the other side of town .
Our paths crossed many times as the years rolled by . He even worked at the bakery for a stint . I truly enjoyed being around Greg . Later on he had the Westman Access Show . Man was he good at that , a natural, but why won't he be . I was on his show a couple times and had some great conversations. I was watching a re-run of an episode on this past Thanksgiving Monday , he told the story of him being Mayor for a Day . Made me smile. I sent him a text , it said " Good Job , you would have been a great mayor for the day , happy thanksgiving. "
Never recieved a reply .
Gods Speed Gregory .

I hadn't known Greg long, but we grew close enough through Mike and Massey football to share a few rounds of golf in his later days. It was always a pleasure to be in his company, whether with him on the sidelines or on the teebox. You will be missed Greg

So sorry to hear of the passing of Greg. He was a true gentleman and always had nice positive things to say. So happy he was able to travel with us to Halifax Nova Scotia in 1987 when the BBobcats men's basketball team won the national championship. It was a great trip, and Greg made it even better. RIP Greg. You will be missed.
