Lorane Steiman
LORANE STEIMAN
Our Mom and Grandma, Lorane Steiman, passed away March 10 after eighty-eight years of life. She was born in Foley, Manitoba to Peter and Frances Susky, the children of poor Polish immigrants. The family didn’t have much in those days; no running water, no bathroom.… but they had each other. Lorane’s passing will be mourned by her younger sister Janet Shore in Ajax, Ontario and by her younger brother David Susky in Winnipeg.
Lorane had a happy childhood in and around Foley, Sandy Hook, Winnipeg Beach and Gimli. She played with her dog Sandy, caught frogs, hunted rabbits with Dad, climbed trees and made makeshift sleds for Winter sliding. Mom’s high school years were spent in Gimli where she enjoyed history, Latin and literature. She liked to borrow books from the library. After graduating from high-school she took a job as a telephone operator in Gimli and would go on to nursing school in Winnipeg.
Lorane met our Dad, Curtis Steiman, at an accountants-nursing dance at the Club Morocco in 1957. They would marry in 1959 and are now both survived by daughters Rebecca Ehnes (James) and Pam Steiman De Visser (Ross) and sons Andrew Steiman (Nancy) and Mark Steiman (Tannis). Mom loved her family and has been blessed with Grand Children Nathaniel, David, Hannah, Faye, Benjamin, Kate, Maxwell, Miya and Jack. Also, Great Grand Child Brady Ehnes. Mom and Dad were married for fifty-eight years before his passing in 2017.

Mom was a gracious hostess and served thousands of meals over her life-time. Gatherings of family, and extended family all enjoyed mom’s cooking. Curtis was prospering in his career in real estate development and he was always bringing home colleagues for a bite. I was amazed as Mom always seemed to rise to the occasion. About ten years ago she quit cooking and I can’t say I blame her.
Curtis and Lorane were blessed to travel a lot in their lives with friends. They visited parts of North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. They enjoyed spending Summers at Lake of the Woods in NW Ontario; swimming, boating and more time with friends and family. Mom also liked dancing and playing cards. She was a smart woman but you had to put forth an effort to get to know her. Mom was happiest planting flowers, shrubs and trees, tending to them and watching them grow. Thank-you Mom for taking care of Dad and us kids for your whole life. This was not an easy job. Thank you for being there for Dad through his last two difficult years.
A funeral will be held at St. Margaret's Anglican Church, 160 Ethelbert Street in Winnipeg at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 15th with burial at the Lake of the Woods Cemetery later that afternoon. For those who are unable to attend the service, St. Margaret's Anglican Church will be live-streaming. Please CLICK HERE to watch the service.
