GARRY VERNON STESKI

June 9, 1954 - December 15, 2022

The Man. The Myth. The Legend.

Garry was born on June 9th, 1954- half an hour after his older twin brother, Glenn, entered the world. Welcoming them were his mother Grace, father Frank and older brother Norman. Garry met his wife Judy in 1977 and they were married shortly after in 1979, starting their 45 years of life together.

Judy and Garry welcomed their kids, Jared in 1982 and Cailin in 1985; he was the best dad either of them could have asked for. He gained a daughter-in-law when Jared married Megan in 2014 and prior to that, a son-in-law when Cailin married Steph in 2012 who gave Garry his little angels. His first granddaughter, Amelie, was born in 2013, and then Talia in 2018. His granddaughters were the light of his life and while we grieve our loss, we will forever be thankful for his love.

Garry met Judy during a ski trip and after they were married, they had planned to spend their honeymoon skiing as well. Unfortunately, they had a difficult start when Garry broke his leg skiing. Poor Garry had to make it up to Judy for their entire life together and would often say “whatever the Judster wants”. Judy and Garry had a very loving marriage and enjoyed many vacations together with their most favorite being Maui and Hilton Head, South Carolina. They just arrived home from a wonderful month-long vacation in Naples Florida prior to Garry falling ill.

Garry grew up in Cresecentwood where he made lifelong friendships with his River Heights crew. He enjoyed the annual “Hogfest” and golfing almost every Monday at Falcon Lake in the summer. Garry’s other set of friends were “the kids” who Jared grew up with. There are many stories that will remain untold but will be fondly remembered by those who enjoyed late nights with Garry whether it was at the lake, the Steski household, or during one of the wild weekends golfing or seeing an NFL game.

Last but not least, Garry had Tommy (Mary) who had a standing date at Earl’s for many years.

In 1996-Garry became a Chartered Financial Analyst and was able to enjoy a number of years grading CFA exams in Charlottesville Virginia, where he made many dear friends with whom he remained in touch.

In his final year of grading, Garry was presented the Tuttle Award for excellence in CFA examination grading.  His career started at the Legislature in Treasury and then he took the family to Regina for five years to work at Farm Credit Corporation. We have many great memories of our time in Saskatchewan, but Judy was happy when Garry was offered a position at the City of Winnipeg and brought the family home. He retired briefly but that didn’t last long and he took on a role at the Province where he officially retired as Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance/Treasury Division in January 2020. Garry loved his work, but more importantly the friendships he made with his colleagues. He enjoyed many dinners, hockey games and football games with his buddies. Garry was privileged to travel across Canada and the US and also see London, Germany, Paris, China and Ireland. He also was able to golf twice at Pebble Beach among other prestigious courses most people only dream of playing.

Garry lived his life to the fullest. We are saddened at how quickly Garry left us, but we also find some comfort knowing he had no regrets. He was larger than life-Always had a smile on his face and a naturally positive attitude. His favorite place to be was at the camp on McConnell Lake where he was able to enjoy many pontoon rides, late night drinks, doing puzzles and being with his family.

We know Garry is enjoying drinks with his father Frank, father and mother in law Glen and Dom, and sister in law Sandy, as well as friends who were taken far too soon.

The family wishes to extend gratitude for the outpouring support we have experienced from all of those who loved Garry. While we are devastated by our loss, we also feel very lucky to have been loved by Garry so much.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations given to Siloam Mission or the Winnipeg Humane Society in Garry’s name.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, January 20th, 2023 at 3pm for anyone to attend at Greendell Community Club located at 75 Woodlawn Avenue.

So many great memories, several golf games and dinners at our favorite restaurant over the last 25 years. Garry was one of the finest individuals I have ever met and I feel so lucky to have known him. I am so fortunate that I flew out this past October and had the chance to spend a night over dinner with Garry. My sincerest condolences to Judy and the family.

We are so saddened by your loss. Garry will be missed by all who knew him, but most especially by those who loved him.  We will always cherish the memories we had with Garry and Judy at Clearwater Bay and later at McConnell on the pontoon boat. He lived well, and died well. Onward to the next adventure.

We are saddened by Garry's passing. Our families were close growing up and we have many fond memories of large gatherings, beatlemania, and the fun that we had together as kids. Our hearts go out to Judy, Jared & Cailyn and their families on this loss.❤

My deepest sympathy for your loss Cailin and family.  Mr. Steski was always such a positive and attentive person, stopping to chat in Wpg Square or at Sobeys proud of his family. May the happy memories you shared give you the strength needed during these hard times.

We have lost a fine human being. Generous. Positive. Loyal.  Compassionate. Smart. Funny. Humble. A friend who could be counted on. A golf buddy who maintained his sense of humour, even when not striking it all that crisply (which was often). A man who had big jobs, but never took himself too seriously. Loved his friends. Loved his family. Although it ended far too early, his was most surely a life well-lived. We are so, so grateful for the wonderful memories of times spent with Garry and Judy. Our lives are much richer for it.

I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to work with Garry at the City for some years. He was both brilliant & a very good, nice, approachable, personable guy. He was my hero on several occasions.

Garry would light up a room with his smile. He would make the complicated look simple, the stressful appear calm, the insurmountable really quite manageable. He had an easy going aura and down to earth approach to life that made the world a better place. We were fortunate to have him in our lives. My sincere condolences to Judy, Jared & Cailin and his family.

Garry had an ability to make everyone in a room feel like the most important person.  I met Garry decades ago in Charlottesville Virginia where we were both foreign (Canadian) graders for the CFA Institute.  I was fortunate to enough to enjoy Garry's company on the golf course and exam grading in Virginia over many years.  I received the news today from a fellow exam grader and needless to say I was shocked to hear the news.  My deepest condolences to Judy and the family.

Garry was such a wonderful person.  I knew him though the treasury work I do in Ottawa but I always considered him a friend.  When I met up with him at a conference, he would always welcome me with such a warm and friendly smile.  He was so down to earth which made him very easy to talk to.  He had a gift of making people feel comfortable and you could tell it was important to him that you felt included in the group.  Honestly, as soon as I saw Garry at an event, I would think "this is great, now I'm really happy I came".  I was so sad to hear of Garry's passing.  My heart and condolences go out to his family.❤
