CHARLES EDWARD (ED) STEVENSON

October 24, 1942 - August 21, 2021

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ed Stevenson, beloved husband, father, papa, brother-in-law, uncle and friend, on Saturday, August 21 at the age of 78 years.

Ed was born in Rivers, Manitoba on October 24, 1942, in his uncle’s bedroom at his grandmother’s house. He moved to Winnipeg as a young child and grew up there. He got his education and went to work with the Gore Mutual Insurance Company from 1961 until 1971, when he began his career with the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation. He held a number of positions with MPI and retired in 1998 as the Salvage Manager for the province.

Dad’s greatest pride and joy was his family and he loved to spend time with them. Dad had a great sense of humor and was always quick with a joke. He loved to golf and enjoyed his DRED tour with great buddies Dick, Ray and Denis twice a year.

He and his second wife, Diane, were very blessed to have spent 18 years wintering in Mesa, Arizona where they did desert walks together and spent time with the many friends they made. He enjoyed hiking in the mountains, golfing, going to local jam sessions and woodworking, and spent many hours in the wood shop working on projects. Dad enjoyed taking casino trips with friends and family, even though the machines often made off with the better end of the deal.

Dad loved the guitar and would often listen to country music, particularly Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers and Willie Nelson. He loved all things country and western, John Wayne movies were his favorite. He could often be seen wearing his cowboy hat and never left home without his cowboy boots. He also loved horses and old cars, his favorite was the 1958 Chevy 2-door (hard top or convertible, he would’ve taken either). He was very fond of sweet treats, especially butter tarts and ice cream, and of course appreciated a good happy hour.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Diane; children from his first marriage Shauna (Joe), Sherry (Rob), April (Randy) and Cory; grandchildren Brianne, Ryan, Jordan, Simone, Katrine, Madison (Erik), Mason, Reid, Mikenna, Cole and Gage; sisters-in-law Brenda (sister-wife (that would make dad lol out loud!)) and Marlene, brothers-in-law Gerry (Barb) and Jack, as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. Dad was pre-deceased by his mother Ellen, father Charles, brother Bill and sisters Lorraine and Eleanor.

Above all, we want Ed to be remembered for his compassion, kindness, generosity, sense of humor, love of family and friends, honesty and integrity. He was a remarkable man who was very well-loved.

He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the good fortune to have known him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

My deepest sympathies to all the family. My husband was good friends with Ed in the early days. Bud was born in 1942 so they were friends for a long time. As the years went by we didnt see him as often but when we did it was always a jovial time of relating stories of what was going on in our lives! He will so missed ❤,

I had the privilege of singing at Ed and Diane’s wedding many years ago. We sat across the aisle from each other at church as well. I will miss seeing them sit together each Sunday and sharing the peace with us. Such a lovely kind man.

Darlene and I met Ed and Diane at Goodlife park in Mesa.  He was one person you could always count on for anything.  He was very well known for his big pot of mashed potatoes he would bring for Thanksgiving potluck.  We had so many happy and fun times down there and his specialty at dances was doing the twist.

I first met Ed years ago when he and Diane started dating.  We (her coworkers in the office) were very impressed with what a gentleman he was to her. We knew she found a good one!  We were so right. We were all so fortunate to know such a lovely, funny gentleman.

I was so sorry to hear of Ed's passing, Diane, and my heartfelt condolences go to you and your family for your loss.  I knew Ed casually when he was at Gore Mutual, and I was in claims at Continental Insurance.  I met Ed again when I joined MPI shortly after Ed.  Our paths then crossed frequently as we both progressed within the corporation in various positions or same locations. Ed and I didn't socialize much outside of work, however I considered him a really likeable and trustworthy friend, one that I had the greatest respect for. My condolences again, Diane. Chic Seabrook

There was something special about Eddie even at 15, when I first met him.  We were part of a group of St. Vital kids who never missed Fiday night dances at Windsor C.C. Even then, he had a goodness and nobility of spirit about him. He seemed more mature than the rest of us because he was so understanding and easy to talk to. He could go on for hours about Rivers, Mb. his favourite place in the world back then. I often think about him and his buddy Richard (Icky) Cooper snd a more innocent time.  My deepest sympathy to his wife, his lovely children and grandchildren and all who loved him. Farewell old friend. Rae

Although we worked at MPI during coinciding years, I did not have the pleasure of working directly with Ed. We did often see each other at various meetings and get- togethers as well as occasionally just running into each other in hallways. Ed was truly a gentleman as well as being a gentle man - soft- spoken, humorous and all around a very genuine person. Condolences to the entire Stevenson family. I have no doubt that Ed’s passing has left an empty space within you all.

So sorry for your loss.  Ed was a really nice guy. I went to Windsor School with Ed.  He was my boyfriend for a few weeks way back when we were 13 or 14.  We would meet up at the Windsor Community Club for the Friday night dances.
