VANESSA JOY STRATTON

Suddenly, with loved ones by her side.

It is with great sadness that the family of Vanessa Joy Stratton announce her passing on December 11, 2022 at St Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg Manitoba.

Vanessa was born in Brookfield Newfoundland on a cold and stormy night March 8, 1970 to proud parents Alexander and Bertha Stratton.

During her teen years Vanessa was proud to serve with the Army Cadets, where she made many friends. Vanessa was a natural leader and an excellent sharpshooter, winning many competitions.

Later on, she moved to Thompson Manitoba, where she raised her two beautiful daughters, Krista and Kaitlyn.

Vanessa met the love of her life, William, whom she later married, gaining his two wonderful sons David and Michael.

During their 26 years spent together, they would often be out travelling on their motorcycle. They enjoyed going to movies and many concerts or sporting events.

Vanessa always loved to dance and enjoyed her life to the fullest as anyone who danced with her could attest.

Vanessa was always the perfect host at her home either hosting birthday celebrations, holidays, or grey cup parties.

Vanessa was a kind and loving gentle soul. She always made time for family and strangers before herself. Sometimes in harms way if the situation warranted it. Never one to turn away from those in need.

Vanessa leaves behind a lasting legacy of love.

Vanessa is survived by her loving husband of 22 years William; daughter Krista (Callum Mckendry); granddaughter Rowyn Joy; grandson Eòghann William; daughter Kaitlyn (Natasha); step son David Asplund (Brittany); granddaughters, Alexa Rose and Addison Rae;  stepson Michael Asplund (Karla); siblings, Kathy (Gene Kean), Christine (Richard Gregoire), Garry (Maryann), Cindi (Kirk Regular), and  Nancy (David Mcbride) as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her father, Alexander Stratton.

Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date as per her request.

In lieu of flowers, if friends and family so desire, donations can be made to the St Boniface Bergen Cardiac Care Clinic.

Special thanks to the Cardiac Care unit Pacemaker Clinic, and all the wonderful staff at the St Boniface Hospital, that made Vanessa’s final days peaceful & comfortable.

“Hug the ones you love, Hug the ones that you don’t love…….. Just Love”

I worked with Vanessa for three years. That was my first job as immigrate. Vanessa welcomed me with her big warm smile which made me feel so welcomed. As many of others, we become friends and extended our friendship outside the workplace. We hung out after work. She welcomed me to her home,  her parties and her life. She taught me so many things that my first taste of poutine is because of her!!! Which I will never forget. She is an angle, a true Canadian! We love you Vanessa. Thank you so much for bringing us plenty of great, warm and joyful memories! You will be missed. Rest In Peace.

I've been trying to figure out what to say about this for over a week now.  I know it had been a little while since we last got together, and since then, it was one of those stupid "we'll have to find some time to go see you and William" things, but now it's too late and I'm blown away with guilt over it. So for now I'm just going to say thank you.  Thanks for being so friendly to me when I was new to Thompson.  Thank you for taking me in when I needed a place to live and making me part of your family while I was there.  Thanks for all the laughs (there were soooooo many of those!).  Thanks for helping me out whenever I needed it.  Thanks for everything.  I will do my best to listen to your words! “ Hug the ones you love, Hug the ones that you don’t love……..Just Love “

It hurts me to hear this news. I am so sorry Will and family. Vanessa was a ray of fuckin sunshine!! She seemed to ALWAYS get though anything with such poise & positivity.  When I lived in Thompson for 3 yrs, she was the BEST thing that happened to me! She welcomed me into her world with open arms & we had soooo much fun together! I envied her HUGE spirit that could draw in so many good people! I admired her fierceness to protect herself, family, the underdog, & those without a voice. Vanessa was so strong!  Why this beautiful women had to be taken, I will never understand! I can only pray that her dear family find peace & healing together. I am so sorry & sending love for this difficult time. ❤

Fun… just fun… that is what I had with Vanessa… one of my favorite memories was out for Dinner and Dancing on New Years Eve with William and Vanessa, and visiting the “Photo Booth”, great times, cherished memories. 💝

William, there are no words to express how sorry I am. She was smart, brave, and beautiful person. I remember she came to Winnipeg years ago for a seminar, and I went to Red Lobster with her. This was the first time Vanessa and I went out on our own. She told me about her life in Newfoundland, how the to of you met, her love for music, TV and movies. As we got to know each other, I realized how much we had in  common. That day will always be special to me. I will never forget my beautiful, brave sister-in-law. Debbie Jordan

We are so saddened to hear of Vanessa's passing. We will truly miss her. I loved her spirit, her unending love for her children and grandchildren. I was always amazed with her ever changing hairstyles and cosmetic changes, she was beautiful inside and out, especially with those big baby blue eyes. We always got a huge laugh from her story telling and the way she expressed herself. Vanessa always had a feisty spirit and she never gave up, dusted herself off, and marched on. Thankyou for being a great sis in law, and for helping to bring our family together for William. Love you.

The world lost a shining bright star. I am deeply saddened you are gone, especially knowing you had so much life and love and joy to give. I miss you so much and wish I could have spent more time in your company. But the time I did spend I will forever cherish. You were so strong and you fought for so long and are now at peace.  I will look back on your videos with fondness and smiles and laughter (and tears). You are forever loved

Vanessa was a beautiful person inside and out and, I am grateful to say, my very dear friend.   You always knew where you stood with Vanessa and she never minced words.  She lived with love, energy, spirit and the most outrageously hilarious sense of humor.    She could always be counted on to be the first one on the dance floor at any social and her moves were epic.  I will miss her so much.  I already feel the void she has left but I am rich in the memories she has left behind.  Her family was the light of her life and she would do anything for them.  I hope you all remember that as you go forward from this difficult time.  She truly was "The Dancing Queen."
