CATHERINE “CATHY” THOMSON STRIKE

October 16, 1944 - April 25, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our Mum on April 25, 2025.

Born October 16, 1944 to George Robert and Margaret King. A war baby born in Lennox Castle, North of Glasgow, Catherine was a proud of her Scottish Heritage. Catherine and her Mum immigrated to Canada when Catherine was 9 months old, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax and making their way to her Father’s family in Montreal. It was in Montreal that Catherine met her lifelong friend Pat Thompson. In her late teens, she moved to Ontario eventually working at Northern Telecom where her Dad, brothers Brian & George, and sister Ruth all worked at different times. Cathy met Jim at Nortel and they married in 1966. They settled into a home in Hillsburg, welcoming Stephen in 1971. Work had the family move to Winnipeg settling in St Vital. Cathy enjoyed her sorority, bowling and joining in the fun with the Greendell ladies. Christine came along in 1974 completing the family.

Catherine stayed at home raising her children, going back to work when they were old enough to be home alone. Cathy loved working at Woolco, went through the transition to Wal-Mart and was so proud of her position as OTC Department Manager.

Many lasting friendships were created at Greendell CC and Wal-Mart that she cherished.

Cathy enjoyed many summer vacations at Pat’s on Lake of the Woods, Beauty Bay and later on the Winnipeg River. Sunset cruises on the water listening to Zamphir and Jer Bears on the deck were a favourite.

Cathy was a proud gardener, perfecting her shady backyard oasis. Many great times were had out there especially with the addition of the hot tub and time spent in the screened porch. So many sunsets were enjoyed and photographed from her West facing viewpoints.

Cathy loved animals, once rescuing a pigeon that recovered in her back entry way. She brought in stray dogs, had budgies, and her much loved dogs Toby, Taffy and Maggie. She would grate up carrots to feed the backyard bunnies, always had a full bird feeder & bird bath, and plenty of nuts for the squirrels.

Cathy lived in her beloved Metz home for 50 years, she knew all the neighbours, forming many friendships.

Cathy’s highlight in life was becoming a Grandmother. She adored and loved her grandchildren: Spencer, Mackenzie, Genevieve along with Christine’s stepchildren Jakub, Sefton, Tenysha & Tevin.

Her seasonal homemade cards will be missed; send a card to someone you love, even just to say hello.

Cathy was predeceased by her parents, brothers and sister. Left to mourn her and carry her memory are her children, Stephen (Tracey) and Christine (Aaron); her grandchildren; brother in law Eric; sister in laws, Laura & Maureen; and many nieces and nephews.

The family is thankful for her friends, the Pats, Donna, Dee, Michelle, Liz, Fern & the 3119 crew, the Greendell ladies and neighbours that were a village around Cathy, always looking out for her and being so supportive. Special thank you to the health care staff that looked after Mum so well in her recent hospital stays.

Cathy’s love and kindness will live on through her family and friends. Her gentle laughter and warm smile will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A celebration of Cathy’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at at Westworth United Church. For those unable to attend, please click here to view a Livestream of the service

In lieu of flower, donations can be made to Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (PWRC), Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre, or Canadian Liver Foundation

Cathy’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I met Cathy a few years ago. I guess a few years before she retired. She was kind. Cathy would sit in my chair sometimes feeling blue. She always left smiling after my visits. Unfortunately, I didn't see her as much in the last year or so. May you rest easy Cathy.

Dear Stephen and Christine. I'm so sorry to read of your Mom's passing. I had not seen your Mom for some years but the last time I did see her was at WalMart. We had a short chat - naturally about the both of you and about my sons, Jon-Paul and Marc LeBlanc.

It was because of your Mom's involvement in the Scouts (Beavers) at Greendell that brought my family into the Community. The group was very short of leaders and the enrollment was stopped. I was disappointed of course for my sons. Would you be a Leader she asked. " Oh no, I have no experience!" Your Mom asked "can you wax a leaf"? "Yes" I said with a question mark?? "You're in!" And that was the beginning of our involvement with Greendell for many, many years. It was also the beginning of my 45+ years of volunteering for many, many organizations and good causes. I've had some wonderful experiences and met many people I would never had the good fortune to meet if not for your MOM. She trusted me on the spot to prove I could "wax a leaf".

Please accept my sincere condolences and sympathy for losing such a special Mom and unique person.

Mrs. Strike as I knew her growing up was always good to me even though her son and I could be a handful at times. I have many fond memories of her and I offer my condolences to Steve and the rest of the family.

My sincerest condolences to Stephen, Christine and to your families. I have many great memories of time spent with you all on Metz. Your mom was always so welcoming and kind to us every time we came to visit creating great memories. I truly appreciate all of the mother figures I had in childhood and she was definitely an important part of that.

I met Cathy almost 50 years ago shortly after moving to Winnipeg from Toronto. We sat together at a Christmas party and talked about being new to Winnipeg and living in the same neighbourhood.

At that time, I didn’t think Cathy and I had much in common. She was a stay-at-home mom with two toddlers and I was on a career path.

Later that year, Jim invited some of the guys back to his house after a curling event and the wives joined them. Cathy welcomed all of us with a smile and great snacks. You could tell she was enjoying every minute and so was I.

From that day she became one of my best friends. She let me talk about my job and I let her talk about her kids, whom I grew to love as family. She would do anything for her kids and, as I soon discovered, she would do anything for her friends, including me. She was always there to support me - through a marriage break-up, several moves, job changes, and the loss of family members. We cried together and we laughed even more. She was a wonderful friend and I will miss her immensely. Rest in Peace my dear friend. You will always be in my heart.

My Dear Friend:

Loved your friendship working with you and your georgeous backyard on Metz. You and Barry gave those chipmunks, especially "Chippy" a lot of peanuts. We will have a glass of wine and think of you. Hope you are in a wonderful peaceful garden.

Love, Michelle & Barry

Cathy was a dear friend you didn't have to see or hear from daily or weekly. I am so grateful for the early years when we were always together and involved in our wonderful community centre Greendell. As time moved on we would see each in passing at her work or at friends. Cathy was always interested in hearing how her friends and family where doing. The old expression 'it seems like yesterday was the last time I saw her' stands so true with Cathy. No matter how much time flew by The conversations would just flow. You will be very missed but the memories remain. Much Love, Linda Bowles
