STEPHEN “STEVE” STUART
March 26, 1952 – January 9, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Stephen “Steve” Stuart. On the evening of January 9, 2026, at the age of 73, Steve passed away at St. Boniface Hospital.
Born on March 26, 1952, in Winnipeg to Gordon and Muriel Stuart, Steve grew up in the West End on Valour Road. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary; his daughters Christeena (Brian), Cheryl, and Charlene (Ray); as well as Ryan (Alissa), who held a special place in his heart and was like a son to him. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren Kerri Lynn (Thomas), Vanessa (Noah), Justin, Jordan, and Jamie, as well as by his brother Norman and sister April. He was predeceased by his parents and by his son in law Brian.
Steve and Mary met in high school in Winnipeg, beginning a lifelong partnership that lasted more than 53 years. Together they raised their three daughters and created a stable, supportive home. Over the years, they also fostered many children, offering care and consistency to those who needed it.
Once their daughters were nearing adulthood, Steve and Mary moved to Sioux Narrows and later to Kenora, where they spent many memorable years living and working in Northwestern Ontario. Steve loved life by the lake—the quiet mornings, the water, and the peaceful rhythm of the seasons. He enjoyed fishing, spending time outdoors, and being part of a close knit community.
During their time in the North, Steve put his wide range of handyman skills to work. He spent countless hours building, renovating, and repairing homes and cabins throughout the area. Whether he was working with electrical, plumbing, or his true passion—woodworking and cabinetry—Steve approached every project with patience, pride, and a determination to do things himself whenever he could. His craftsmanship and reliability made him a trusted presence in the community, and his work can still be found in many homes and cabins around the lake.
Eventually, Steve and Mary returned to Winnipeg to be closer to their daughters and growing family, but the memories of their years in Northwestern Ontario always remained close to his heart.
Once back in Winnipeg, Steve continued to enjoy working with his hands, especially woodworking. With Ryan’s approval, he moved into one half of the garage at Ryan’s place and set up a workshop for the two of them to share. It quickly became his happy place, where he spent many hours creating special projects for family and friends. It was also a spot where he and Ryan shared many conversations, and where Steve found a great deal of enjoyment and purpose.
Steve was known to everyone for his kind heart, steady presence, and willingness to help. He was a proud dad and grandpa, always ready to lend a hand, share a story, or brag about his family’s accomplishments, no matter how small. And no day was complete without his favorite drink—a steeped tea from Tim Hortons—and, of course, don’t forget the tea biscuits.
Steve’s legacy of generosity, craftsmanship, and love for his family will live on in all who knew him.

Steve was a man of many talents. He also had the patience of a saint, always remaining calm as he dealt with being the only male in a family of females! He had a great sense of humor, which helps in that situation.
He was knowledgeable in many areas, a great resource when stuck with a dilemma of just about any sort. He and Mary spent many hours helping us, (Paul, who was Mary's sister, and Steve's good friend), with building our home in the Springfield area. Without their help we may never have finished that place!
He will be truly missed by my family - we have so many wonderful memories of times spent together, especially while our children were growing up. Steve and Mary and their girls were a huge part of our lives. The world will be a bit less brighter with his absence.

We were deeply saddened to hear of Steve’s sudden passing. We first met Steve while Mary was sharing a room at Deer Lodge with our mom, Connie, where he was a constant source of kindness and support to both Mary and Mom during their recovery. That was four years ago, and since then our families became intertwined—sharing Thanksgiving, Christmas, and birthday celebrations, and truly feeling like one family. Steve had a wonderful gift for storytelling, which he happily shared and which we always enjoyed listening to. He became a dear and cherished friend and will be greatly missed.
