GEORGE McFALL SWEENEY

It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news of the passing of our very proud and loving Dad and Papa, George McFall Sweeney, on January 18, 2021, after the most courageous battle with AML (Cancer).

Dad is remembered for his independence and his fierce strength and determination.  Having arrived in Canada from Scotland in 1968 as a very young man, Dad set out to make a life with his then wife (Sandra) and infant daughter (Lynne). As Dad assimilated into the Canadian way of life, he expanded his family with the birth of a son (Jason) and embraced the local soccer community, a place where we developed many life-long friendships.

Dad enjoyed a long career as an Electrician, working in Winnipeg and in remote locations throughout Northern Manitoba and the North West Territories.  He often shared his artic experiences with our family, bringing home fantastic photos and Inuit art treasures to share.  Dad developed many friendships throughout his career, but none were closer than Ed (C), Ed (M) and Dave, three friends that dad held particularly close until his passing.

As a Papa, Dad loved to receive hand-made cards and well wishes from his four granddaughters (Camryn and Brooke Sweeney (Penticton, BC) and Emma and Rececca (Becca) Anderson (LaSalle, MB)), which he kept close to his heart, and to learn of their accomplishments in hockey, fastpitch, dance and school. He had a special t-shirt that doubled as a growth chart where he would track the height of the girls as they grew, even as they surpassed him in stature. He was also immensely proud of our accomplishments as his children Jason (Tannis) Penticton, BC and Lynne (Aaron) Lasalle MB), as we grew with our families and in our careers.

While heartbroken to have to part ways with our Papa and Dad we are grateful for the time we had with him, and for the memories we have captured and the lessons we have learned along the way.

​

In keeping with Dad’s wishes we will celebrate his life with a small gathering of family and friends at a later date, when gatherings of this nature are permitted.

​

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the caring and compassionate Doctors and Nurses of Cancer Care and to the dedicated and steadfast Doctors and Nurses who continue to work tirelessly on the front lines of our hospitals, you are truly a compassionate and committed group of people who deserve a world of love and respect.
