MARIE “HILDA” SYDOR

(née Lafreniere)

April 17, 1922 – June 15, 2025

Our dear mother has left this earth at 103 years of age. She is preceded by her husband Peter; her two sons, Richard (Lana) and Clark; her grandson Naron Penny; and all of her siblings.

She is survived by her daughter Nancy Penny (Ron); son Bob (Colleen); and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and great great great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and lots of friends.

Hilda grew up on a farm in St. Ambroise Manitoba. She was the youngest of a very large family. Her mother was pregnant 21 times of which 17 survived to adulthood.

Farm life was hard work. Some of the chores included early morning milking of the cows, preparing meals for this large family and the farm hands, lots of baking, and the making of cheese. (This was stored underground as this was their method of refrigeration).

The farm seemed a place of great activity. Her father was close friends with Douglas Campbell who became our premier. Her brother Jellicoe became jig and fiddle champion of western Canada. He played for Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Queen Elizabeth. My mother was surrounded by lots of love and music.

When Hilda was old enough, she moved to Winnipeg where she met and married our hard working father. They had four children and eventually settled in St. James. They were very happy there. Life was good.

When my father passed in 1990 the youngest son Clark became my mother’s closest companion and eventually care giver for our mother.

They were known as the dynamic duo. They went on adventures every single day. They went everywhere and they seemed to be known by everyone.

Our mother was always happy and she loved meeting everybody. She was full with love and everyone loved her in return.

We would like to thank West Park Manor in Charleswood for taking excellent care of our mother these last three years. They did it with respect, attention, and loving care, with special thanks to Dierdre.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, at St. Ignatius Church, 255 Stafford at Corydon.

Hilda’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Wonderful, happy memories of Hilda Sydor.

I met Hilda when I became friends with Clark in Drama class in the 80's. Many friends came over to the Sydor house to play cards and I was one of them. What a beautiful lady inside and out!

Hilda was an absolute gem and I am grateful to have been a part of her life over the past three years. Missing your singing voice and your ability to make me laugh. An unmatched personality who will be missed terribly. To you, my forever duet partner and friend. Love to you.
