JAMES (JIM) TAKENAKA

September 22, 1930 - October 11, 2022

It is with great sadness, the Takenaka family would like to announce the passing of Jim Takenaka, Taz to his family, who passed away at home on October 11, 2022.

Dad leaves behind his wife of 63 years Edna/Shigeko, sons, Jim (Ramona), Glenn, and Ross (Christina). He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Jordan (Drew), Troy, Lucas, Emily (Trent) and Vanessa (Cole), as well as five great grandchildren (Harrison, Casey, Andi, Eloise and Harriet).

Dad was born in New Westminster, BC (now known as Delta) in September of 1930. He lived on the family farm until 1941 when the government of the time seized their land and possessions and forced them to move to Manitoba. Dad came to Manitoba with his mother, his older sister, Kaye, and his older brother, Dick. He went to school near Ille Des Chenes. After school hours and during the summer he would join the rest of the family picking sugar beets in fields.

Dad furthered his education by training as a mechanical draftsman. He used his training to land a job at Scouten, Mitchell, Sigurdson where he remained faithfully until his retirement in the 1990’s.

Dad met Mom when they were kids in British Columbia and later were re-acquainted after both families were relocated from British Columbia to Manitoba. They were married in 1958 and had three sons, Jim, Glenn, and Ross and settled in Transcona.

Dad was an avid sports fan and a long-time Jets 1.0 season ticket holder from the WHA to the NHL until the original team left the city. At home the TV would always be on the sports channel and there would be no shortage of conversations about the Jets, the Bombers, or whatever sport was dominating the scene at the time.

Dad was a regular golfer with his guys at the Windsor Park Golf Course up into his 80’s when the walk became too much for him. He was also a regular with Mom at the Golf Dome in the mornings where many a putting contest were had with the other regulars.

Dad did not want to inconvenience anybody with a service and has requested an ash scattering informally in New Denver, BC at a later date. He would have wanted to let people know that he has moved on and will be waiting, until we all meet again.

The family would like to thank all the well-wishers at the Co-op condo at 1090 Devonshire, and know that we are all doing fine, just a little sad at times.

Jims family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Dear Edna and family,  Our deepest condolences on the loss of our friend Jim. I joined SMS in 1980 and shared many happy times and stressful times on many major projects with Jim until his retirement and also enjoyed a few golf games over the years. Anne Marie and I remember fondly our annual February Birthday dinners with Joe and Bev Smithson and Gordon and Jay Grieef.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family James & Anne Marie Stewart

Edna and family, My sincere condolences.  I'm sure Jim will be missed by everyone.  You can imagine my shock this morning while reading Joe's obituary to see Jim's right next!  I like to thin Jim was there to meet Joe at the Gate and the two of them are off to the Horse Races!
