VERNA MILICENT THOMAS

(née HAWKINS)

On Tuesday November 2, 2021 at Birchwood Terrace, Kenora, Ontario, with family by her side, Verna Thomas entered into rest at the age of 95.

Verna was born in Craigmyle, Alberta, October 15, 1926, spent her formative years there, and then moved to Eagle River/Waldhof area to begin her own family life.

Mom was a strong willed person and made her way as a wife, mom, grandma, and friend. Special time was made for family. We often had friends accompany us home after school for the fresh bread that was made every second day, and her brownies were the talk of the town.

Mom was for years involved in home and school or any activities concerning her kids, never saying no when asked for help.

In around 1988, she went to live in Vermillion Senior Centre. It was during this time that she would join the various casino trips, sometimes with her senior groups and sometimes with her daughters. She would never turn down a chance to play bingo or slot machines. In 2013, she entered Birchwood Terrace in Kenora, where she resided until her death.

Mom seemed to be a favourite at the home with the staff, as we saw in her last days of her life.

Predeceased by her parents, two sisters, one brother, three brother in laws, an infant son (1957), her husband Henry (1986), daughter in law Helen (2009), son in law Ed (2015), and her last sibling Ruth (Sept 2021).

She leaves to mourn her seven children, Ted (Donna), Pat (Tom), Jim (Leslie), Sue (Mark), Bernice (Gary), Joyce (Ralph), and Dan (Christa); along with grand children, great grand children and great-great grand children and many nieces and nephews. All family was important to mom.

Cremation has occurred. If friends should desire, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

A celebration of life will occur in the summer of 2022. In the meantime, Verna's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

My mom was known for her smile, her willingness to include people in her life and her ability to bridge the age gaps between friends her age and her kid's friends.  I know you are watching over us, but you are missed here on earth.  Love you always,  Sue

I remember ‘Mrs. Thomas’ for many reasons but especially when went into her house after sliding all day and our feet were frozen. She opened up the stove and we stuck our feet as close to that wood heat as we could! Of course her brownies were beyond delicious. We always hoped she’d send them for bake sales…sooo good! I make brownies now snd they’re still not up up her caliber!!  A great, smart lady. Witty til the end. RIP. You will always be remembered
