ALEXANDER THOMPSON

October 7, 1931 - February 24, 2017

Alex will forever be remembered by his wife Marian, their sons Todd (Leanne) and Trent, and their grandchildren; Anna and Luke, as well as family members in England.

Dad was born and raised in Portsmouth, England.  His childhood was shaped by growing up during World War II.  He told stories of spending days and nights in bomb shelters as a young boy. He joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) when he was a young adult and was stationed for several years in Egypt. He was trained as a welder and worked on the Queen Mary. In the 1950’s Alex made the long journey by boat to Canada, arriving in Montreal and from there settling in Toronto. He worked as a welder before being hired on at Air Canada as a Ticket Agent in 1959. In the mid 1960’s he moved to Winnipeg where he

continued working for Air Canada.

Dad met our Mum at Air Canada in Winnipeg where Marian worked as a switch board operator. They married in 1971 and raised their two sons together.  Alex retired from Air Canada after almost 32 years. They spent many holidays with their boys at their cottage in Sandy Lake and later at their trailer at Spruce Sands Park north of Gimli.

As a long time Air Canada employee, Alex had the opportunity to fly on passes and loved to plan out his trips and fly whenever he could. He made many trips back to England to visit his family.

Alex was a wonderful husband and loving father and worked hard to provide for his family.

He was loved by many and will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Alex’s life will be held on Sunday, March 12th at the Royal Aviation Museum in Winnipeg. This will be a casual come and go event. Doors will be open from 11:30am to 1:30pm. Friends and family are welcome to stop by to say hello, take a tour of the museum and enjoy the rest of your day.
