ANNE THOMPSON

The family of Anne Thompson is heartbroken to announce their mother's  passing, after a brief illness, on January 16, 2018 in the St. Boniface Hospital.

Anne was born April 3, 1926 in Yugoslavia and immigrated to Canada with her parents at the age of three.

​

She was predeceased by her husband Steve. She is survived by her daughter Carol and sons Jim (Huguette) and Todd (Gisele), as well as her beloved granddaughter Amanda.

​

From her early days working at Daytons (where she developed her impeccable fashion sense), through a long and happy time at Canfor, work was always very important to Mom and she instilled a strong work ethic in all us kids.  Following the death of her husband Steve at a relatively early age, Anne continued her career at Check Promotions until she “retired”.

But retirement was a four-letter word to Mom.  She volunteered well into her eighties, first with Good Neighbours, manning the front desk, maintaining the member database and handling tax receipts, and then with the Congregate Meal Program at 1100 Henderson, serving food to other seniors, many younger than herself.  Mom was also an animal lover, and in her later years, she enjoyed going in to Craig Street Cats and visiting with the feline residents.  Ever the consummate volunteer, if someone needed help, she was there!  

She loved the arts – MTC, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the WSO, Rainbow Stage, or even a free jazz concert at the Forks – and she was happy to attend whenever she could.  She also loved her music, from the big band sounds of Glenn Miller to Pavarotti and the Three Tenors. 

Anne kept up on current events, reading the Winnipeg Free Press every day with her ritual morning coffee and, just before bed, tuning into the National, more often than not, with a glass of red wine.  But if you wanted to get her laughing, Steve Harvey and Family Feud was the ticket!  She kept her mind active with puzzles, doing the cryptoquote and crosswords daily.

Anne was such a people person - always making time for friends and family, even reaching out to strangers.  She made friends easily because she was so warm, out-going and genuine, and once you were friends, you were friends for life.  But she was feisty as well – get on her bad side and you knew it!

Age was no obstacle for Mom - she was an extremely independent woman, living on her own after dad’s passing.  She was strong-willed and usually tried to do things for herself, yet graciously accepted the offer for help when needed.      

Mom’s independence also lead her to have a very active social life.   Whether it was mall walking at Kildonan Place or Polo Park, or vacationing “across the line”, she was always on the go or doing something.   As her kids, we used to joke with her about how full a social calendar she kept compared to ours.   Anne was always up for fun and adventure!  

Even though we had her in our lives for a long and beautiful time, it will never be enough.  We will miss her forever.  Love you Mom…

Memorial contributions to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or the Craig Street Cats would be sincerely appreciated by Anne's family.

A come-and-go afternoon will be held from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 28, 2018 at Valhalla Towers, 10 Valhalla Drive.
