DARWIN ALLAN THOMPSON

It is with great sadness that the family of Darwin Allan Thompson announces his passing which occurred on Tuesday, October 5, 2021.

He was a loving son, husband, father, stepfather, uncle, grandfather, and friend. He was predeceased by his parents George (2004), Yvonne (2000) and his brother Wayne (1989). He is survived by his partner Sherry, children Monique, Nicole, Ashley, and Carley (Kris), his sister Sandy (Randy), his brother-in-law Rory (Cindy), and father-in-law Frank. He is also survived by his grandchildren Carter, Rosaley, Kallie, and Kylo. Dar leaves his family and friends with decades of fond memories to be cherished.

Dar worked for 20 years at the University of Manitoba as an electrical designer. Dar loved his job and the close friendships he developed during his time at the University.

Dar grew up playing competitive baseball. He loved the sport and all the social atmospheres that came with it. His love for baseball met its match when Dar fell in love with the game of golf. He joined a Men's league and Wednesday night golf quickly became Dar’s favourite day of the week.

Being a grandpa was a highlight of Dar’s life and he was incredible at it. He could always be found playing and getting into mischief with his grandchildren. Dar was a charismatic person who was deeply committed to his family and friends.

Dar will always be remembered for his love for his family, his infectious smile and his warm heart. He would give you the shirt off his back if he could.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to pancreatic cancer research at CancerCare Manitoba.

Due to Covid restrictions, a private celebration of Dar’s life will be held at a later date.

I met Darwin Thompson almost exactly three years before he passed away. We hit it off rather quickly and we would often race to be the first in the building in the morning. He usually won and then would tease me as I entered “Let me guess, you had a flat tire?” or “I made you coffee … but it got cold an hour ago!” I would have a come-back ready and he would have an even cleverer come-back ready. Darwin knew how to laugh and he knew how to make others laugh. He took me under his wing when I started with AES at the University of Manitoba … showed me “how things are done, electrically.” He would look at me and with a smirk he would say “You architects!” He would shake his head, sigh heavily. Then say something like “Don’t worry grasshopper, you will figure it out … one day … maybe!” We’d laugh.  At the end of the day he would ask “You comin’ in early tomorrow … or are you going to sleep in again, like you did today?” Then he would say “Love ya, brotha … from another motha!” He would wave and stroll out the door. And I would look forward to the dance again the next day. The dances were further apart during COVID, but sometimes we would Teams call at the end of the day and go through the motions like we were still in the office. He had that crazy teal blue background 😊  Sadly, there will not be another dance. There will not be any more teal blue Teams calls. There is a little less laughter in the world! And we are all left trying to “figure it out!” RIP buddy! You did great work for AES … but more importantly, you were a great human being!

My deepest condolences to Sherry, to Darwin's daughters, grandchildren and the whole family. It was so sad that we lost a great friend, a brother at work but heaven gained another angel. A very friendly, polite, respectful, caring friend and co-worker were just few of so many descriptions of Darwin. You will be missed Darwin and we will cherish all precious memories. ❤

Darwin gave me the most precious gift anyone can have.  We were so excited when we had twin girls.  What a gift! Precious memories! We were best of friends through junior high, high school and even during our short marriage and for a long time after.  We played ball together, we bowled together, we coached baseball together, we went camping every weekend which he loved, we were always doing something fun.   Just so many wonderful and yet funny memories that I will cherish and hold in my heart forever! The only blessing now, is knowing is he with the good lord and not suffering. Rest in peace my friend!! ❤

Our most heartfelt sympathies to Sherry, Ashley and the family of  Darwin. We have been longtime neighbors and friends of Darwin and Sherry. Our kids are Ashley's age they and spent many days playing together. Most often we'd talk with Darwin and Sherry in the front yard just for a minute, then thirty or forty minutes later, commence the yardwork! So approachable and so friendly, Darwin would always advise us on all things Jets, Bombers, politics, landscaping, weather, work, and of course golf! Snow clearing was another thing Darwin seemed to love. Blowing his large driveway wasn't enough. He'd clean the front street in both directions regularly, and always with a big smile on his face. And reading his story, yes Darwin was the perfect dad and grandad! Such a shock, far too young, we'll miss Darwin so much.

Darwin was a unique member of the University of Manitoba community.  He was a brother to everyone that he worked with . Darwin tied our office together with his friendly manner and ease with dealing with everyone that he met.  He treated new and old friends with the same high level of courtesy, respect, and friendship.  He will be missed by anyone who has met everyone's brother, Darwin.

We have no words to express the sadness of losing such a dear friend and cousin.  We will cherish all the laughs and time spent with Darwin.  Our hearts are broken but especially we are saddened for the loss felt by Sherry and all of his girls,  his precious grandchildren and the rest of the immediate family 💔  He was a gem of a guy and truly would do anything for anyone who needed his help.  Carey especially will miss his buddy.  Our love to you all.
