MARIAN THOMPSON

(née Panchuk)

May 14, 1936 - June 24, 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Marian Thompson. Marian passed away peacefully with her sons by her side in West Park Manor personal care home at the age of 84.

Marian will forever be loved and remembered by her sons Todd (Leanne) and Trent, her grandchildren Anna and Luke, her family members in Sandy Lake and her extended family members in England.

Marian was born and raised in Sandy Lake Manitoba. She spent her childhood with her mom and dad in their home in Sandy Lake. In her late teens, she spent time in Chatfield MB, working as a grade school teacher.

Looking to spread her wings, she moved to the big city of Winnipeg with her mom where they rented a house on Sherburn Street.

Craving her independence, she got a place of her own and landed a job as a switchboard operator for Air Canada.

While working at Air Canada, she took a vacation to Hawaii (and is why one of her favourite songs was Elvis’s - Blue Hawaii) It was at Air Canada where she met the love of her life Alexander Thompson who was working there as a ticket agent. After getting to know one another and traveling throughout Canada and to places like England, Bermuda, and Barbados, they got married in 1971. Shortly thereafter, they had their two sons and started their family.

Marian dedicated her life to raising her sons and was truly an amazing homemaker. She always kept her house in order and made sure the fridge and cupboards were full of food. She was an amazing cook and loved to spend her time cooking and baking in her kitchen. She had an extensive library of cookbooks in which she kept notes and comments for nearly every recipe she made.

She loved to be around people and would always welcome friends and family into her home. Raising two boys, She was truly a good sport when it came to putting up with their silly antics and practical jokes.

Marian lived a life full of travel and adventures with her friends and family; whether it was returning to England and Sandy Lake, spending weekends in Fargo and Grand Forks, hopping on a plane to places like Toronto and Vancouver or heading out to their summer trailer in Spruce Sands.

One of Marian’s proudest moments was when she became a Baba to her grandchildren Anna and Luke.

She was a kind and special lady, she was also a dedicated wife, loving mother and Baba and was cherished by all who were in her life and will be sorely missed.

"We love you and miss you Mom."

In Lieu of flowers a donation can be made to a charity of your choice.

A celebration of Marian’s life will not be held because of the Covid-19 restrictions. In the meantime,  her family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour Marian's memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos and/or sharing your own memories and stories using the comment section on this page.

Marian’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at West Park Manor Personal Care Home for providing care for our mom over the past few years.

What a beautiful tribute to a special lady. We knew Marian for many years being neighbours and raising our children at the same time. We also very much enjoyed our “occasional” happy hours with Alex and Marian at Spruce Sands. She was a lovely lady and will be fondly remembered. Our sincerest condolences to you Trent, Todd & Leanne and your family.

Beautiful tribute to a wonderful person. So many great memories of going to 'the Thompson's' over the years and enjoying her warm hospitality and some of the best meals you'll ever have. Such a kind and generous soul. Rest in peace Mrs. Thompson.

Our deepest sympathy on Martian’s passing.  Marian was my dad Mike Panchuk’s first cousin.  I always remember her to be a kind and gentle lady.  When I was small I remember going to the bus in Sandy Lake with Iris and Carol Yozenko to wait for Marian to come on the bus from Winnipeg.  She always made the 3 of us feel very special and we all adored her. Rest In Peace Marian. Terry and Pam (Panchuk) Szmon

watched the video and brought back any memories.  Marian and I went to MTI together in about 1956 or 1957 and have been friends ever since.  Rest easy my dear friend.
