MARILYN JOYCE THOMPSON

December 15, 1939 – November 29, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce that Marilyn Thompson passed peacefully on Saturday November 29, 2025 at Tuxedo Villa, just shy of her 86th birthday.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ross and Beryl Thompson; and her brother Brian Thompson and sister-in-law Lorri (née Carriere). She is survived by her niece and nephew, Shannon and Colin Thompson.

Marilyn was born in Miami, Manitoba on December 15th, 1939. Her father was a teacher and principal in Winnipeg, and her mother helped with school administration, and Marilyn carried on the tradition. She got her Master of Education degree from the University of Manitoba, and devoted much her life to the teaching profession. She is probably best known as a beloved teacher. But she also contributed a lot beyond the classroom, as the Social Studies Department Head at Sisler High School, in multiple roles including President of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society, and in many roles with the Winnipeg Teachers’ Association Council and Executive.

She was a passionate conversationalist and had many interests, including: travel, symphony, ballet, theatre, politics (which she and her brother disagreed about), international affairs, reading, needlework, movies, walking, and hockey.

Marilyn was a devoted care giver to her mother in her senior years, and was able to help keep her mother in her own home much longer as a result. About 6 years ago Marilyn started to show signs of cognitive decline, and we are very grateful to her neighbours on River Ave for watching out for her. Many thanks to the staff of Station 3 at Tuxedo Villa for their excellent care during these final years.

But the family’s greatest thanks are to Marian McDermott who was able to be there with her in person while we lived far away. We cannot say enough about the deep love, attention, and advocacy Marian provided and we are truly beyond grateful.

Cremation has taken place and in accordance with Marilyn’s wishes there will be no formal memorial service. Donations in her memory can be made to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

Rest in peace now

Auntie Marilyn

xoxo

I'm Marilyn's neice, and I loved her visits to Toronto to see my brother and I. I admired her passion and independence and commitment to what she loved. Thank you to those who have left comments, I love hearing your experiences.

She was an amazing History teacher. She taught with so much passion and her classes were always engaging and thought invoking. Thank you for sparking my interest in history. Ms. Thompson.

I have very fond memories of being in her class in the late 80's. She instilled a love of history in me. I was also privileged to have her as a cooperating teacher in university. She was very knowledgeable and passionate about her work.

Miss Thompson was an exemplary teacher, and a very bright woman with a wry sense of humour that was wonderful for teaching teenagers. I was in her class in the mid-70s at River Heights Junior High, and I not only respected her and learned a great deal, but I really enjoyed her as a person. My condolences to the family.

Marilyn was a strong advocate for students and teachers. We served together on the Manitoba Teachers Society Provincial Executive. Aubrey and I often sat near her at the symphony, ballet, opera and theatre. She was an impressive woman whom we both admired. Rest in peace.

As a former colleague and friend from our days at River Heights JHS, I offer my condolences to Marilyn's family. I wish to thank her for the gifts she gave to teaching and to my personal growth as a teacher. She had a dry, clever sense of humor. This brilliant woman devoted much of herself to this profession and to her students. Rest in peace Marilyn.

Miss Thompson was one of my favourite teachers. i was in her home room class in grade 9 and she was my social studies teacher. She was funny, fair, and compassionate. I will always remember the Ford Mustang she drove. And sometimes I was lucky enough to see her at the ballet.

Rest in peace my friend. Condolences to your family. Our friendship goes back to our days on the Provincial Executive of the Manitoba Teachers' Society. You were a wonderful teacher and advocate for teachers. I will miss visiting with you especially on your birthday which you shared for 39 years with my daughter.
