MARGARET THORSTEINSON

June 27, 1954 – March 29, 2023

With great sorrow we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our dear Mom and Wife Margaret. She will be forever missed by her husband Arthur, sons Doug (Michelle) and Randy (Donna), her 6 grandchildren Riley, Reagan, Tyler, Abby, Reese, and Owen, her sisters Rose, Doris, Alice, and Lily, many other family members, friends, former co-workers, and acquaintances along the way.

She joins in heaven her parents Louis and Harriet Chartrand, sister Thelma Chartrand, brother Albert Chartrand, nephew/Godson Terrance Desjarlais (Lily), nephews Tom Jr. and Brian Nixon (Doris).

Margaret grew up in Lundar, Mb.  She loved going to school, spending time with her family and taking care of her parents.  She met her husband Arthur at his sister Patsy’s house next door, where he told her that he was going to marry her one day!  They were married a year later on May 6, 1972. Shortly after, they moved to Winnipeg and started a family, having two sons, Doug and then Randy.

Margaret was a homemaker who took care of her husband and kids every day. Her first full-time job was working downtown at the Boyd Building for Dr. Doyle as a medical secretary. She made many friends with the patients, including her longtime friend Cheryl Grosjean, and worked there until 1996.  She then decided to go back to school and attended Red River Community College where she completed her certificate as an Office Technologist in March 1997. Months later, she began her career with the Neurosurgery Department (400 Tache) / Health Science Center, and retired after 25 years, in August 2022.

Margaret spent many years caring for her mother Harriet and sister Thelma after they moved to the city from Lundar. She was a dedicated daughter and sister and put her family before herself. She was the glue of the family, coordinating dinners and planning visits with GG. She always had an open door and would make time to help anyone that needed it.

Margaret would often spend her weekends with her sister and best friend Lily going to the Legions for the meat draws and hanging out with their friends. They would always have many laughs and funny stories to share. In the summer, you could always find Margaret in her backyard on her swing. She would listen to music and visit neighbors or family and friends that dropped by.

Arthur and Margaret had season tickets to the Winnipeg Goldeyes. They enjoyed going to the games, eating the concession foods, and listening to the live bands. She especially loved the Halloween themed games!

Margaret was very passionate about the Winnipeg Jets!  She faithfully watched every game, yelling at the TV, and would often joke and say that she should be playing to help them win!

Margaret absolutely adored her grandchildren. They were her pride and joy. She was always there to cheer them on at the rinks. She was fully supportive and didn’t hold back when she felt the refs weren’t doing a good job.  She never missed a birthday, graduation, holiday, or any important event in their lives.  She would often drop off treats and baking for no reason other than to see the excitement on their faces. She loved having them over, cooking big breakfasts and was known for the best pancakes and crispiest bacon ever! She always greeted them with a big hug and a “Hello Sweetheart”. She loved them tremendously and made sure they felt it.

Most recently, Margaret enjoyed travelling.  She did the impossible by getting Arthur to go on not one, but two cruises and a trip to Las Vegas!  She also went to Mexico with her sister Lily.  She always talked about where she was going to go next.

Special occasions and holidays will never be the same, but we will cherish the memories and the time spent with her. She loved and cared for us and was always just a phone call away when needed. She was a devoted grandma, mom, wife, sister, aunt, coworker, and friend who will be deeply missed.

Although Margaret was small in stature, she had a huge heart! Her presence was always felt whenever she was in the room. She enjoyed making people laugh. She had a quirky sense of humor that was passed on to her children, and her grandchildren.

She was everything to us…She was a Dynamite Woman!

At Margaret’s request, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held on Friday April 28, 2023, 2:00pm – 4:00pm at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Margaret’s name to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Margaret’s family also requests that her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Doug&Randy, Very sorry to hear of your mom's passing.  I saw her a few years ago at Health Sciences centre and even though it had been like 30 years since I saw her she recognized me right away. She was a very lovely lady. I remember going to birdshill with you guys or hanging out at your house and having the best time! She was always fun to be around.  Take care of yourselves and your Dad.  Tami

I am so sad to hear of the sudden passing of Margaret. I worked with her in the Neurosurgery Office for many years. We had many discussions about life, children, grandchildren. She always had a smile and always stopped, if she could, at my office to chit chat....She will be missed and my sympathies and sincere thoughts go out to the family. She was a wonderful person and I am glad to have known her.

Dear Arthur, I offer my sincere condolences on the loss of your dear wife. I worked with Margaret in the neurosurgery office for many years. Margaret was always a force to be reckoned with...in a good way! I don't remember seeing her very often without a smile. When I asked her to assist me with an office task she consistently reached out to help. She demonstrated determination and perseverance. I am sad to learn that she died so suddenly, shortly after retirement, with all those plans for travelling and looking after her cherished family. Clearly she will be missed a lot.
