Roy Thurston

ROY THURSTON
December 9, 1950 – August 23, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of Roy Thurston, who left us on August 23, 2025, at Oakwood Golf Course in Ste. Anne Manitoba, at the age of 74.
Roy was born on December 9, 1950 to Archibald Thurston and Germaine Thurston in Winnipeg, MB.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Louise; and his children, Richard and Jeremy (Regina).
Roy is lovingly remembered by his siblings, Ida Thurston and Joan Ross; as well as his sisters-in-law, Irene Lajoie and Rita Lajoie. Roy is predeceased by his stepsiblings, Jeanne Lajoie, Marcel Lajoie, Roger (Greta) Lajoie, Roland Lajoie, and Emile Lajoie.
Roy had a long and distinguished career working for the provincial government before his retirement in 2009. He worked hard to provide his family with a great life.
Roy was an avid golfer up until the time of his passing, a pastime he often enjoyed with his sons, Richard and Jeremy, as well as many friends. He was skilled (or lucky, depending on who you ask) enough to have managed two holes-in-one, in 1990 and 2016. No matter the outcome though, he enjoyed the camaraderie and challenge of the game.
Roy had the privilege to visit much of North America, both on family vacations and golfing trips. Some highlights include a trip to the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, as well as golfing at Myrtle Beach many times over the years. He always made sure to provide fun experiences for his family with trips to destinations such as Disney World, San Diego, Niagra Falls, and Vancouver. A truly unselfish man, he would do anything for his family.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Brian from Oakwood Golf Course and other fellow golfers (Chris and Charles) as well as first responders who worked so hard to save Roy. We are eternally grateful for their efforts and compassion during that time.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on September 9 at 603 Wellington Crescent in Winnipeg.
Roy’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I was so sorry to hear of Roy's passing. His desk was next to mine and he was such a help to me when I started. He was a great co worker. My condolences to his family.

Due to distance and living across a border, I didn't have many visits with Grandpa Roy, but I'll remember all of them - including my first trip North to meet him and Grandma Louise. He was a funny man and always played up any situation with a quick wit and a retort. Sending my love and condolences in this hard time. His memory will be with us all for a lifetime.
