JOHN PAUL TISDALE

April 28, 1946 - April 20, 2023

John Paul Tisdale passed away the morning of April 20th, 2023. He was 76 years old.

John was born on April 28, 1946 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was the eldest of the four children of Elizabeth and Paul Tisdale. He was a strong but gentle presence in his siblings’ lives. Childhood days were spent with a mob of friends in open fields around the local golf course; summoned home in the evening by the ring of an old fashioned school bell. First hobbies included a carefully assembled bug collection and a budding interest in tropical fish. Later there was model plane building, leading to explosive demolition with firecrackers (WWII battle simulations?) to his mother’s chagrin.

During his early years, radio introduced John to The Goons, while television made him a lifelong fan of the Monty Python crew & John Cleese in Fawlty Towers; giving him an enduring love of things whimsical, satirical, and absurd. The Windsor School Band introduced John to the works of John Phillip Sousa, while piano lessons exposed him to the classical composers. Kelvin High brought Gilbert & Sullivan musicals, which left plenty of room for a range of rock & blues musicians in later years.

John graduated from the University of Manitoba with a bachelor's degree in science. He went on to work with Environment Canada as a field chemist. This allowed him to see remote parts of the country and exercise his dedication to science and environmental protection. He knew all the best bakeries from Winnipeg to Thompson. One summer working on the Mackenzie River was particularly treasured.

While working at the Freshwater Institute he met Nancy, and began a romance that would last the rest of his life. They married and had two children, Ellen and Stuart. Ever since they moved to St Norbert in 1989, their home has been filled with music, wine, great friends, and almost always a dog.

Following a full career with Environment Canada, John enjoyed spending his mornings and afternoons driving the school bus for First Student. He loved meeting all the young people, hearing their stories and sharing his knowledge. He was patient, kind, and dedicated to safety and reliability.

He made many lifelong friends through the sports he played: early days included baseball and rugby, later there was curling and hockey. He had a long and eventful career as a goalie, traveling to the USA and abroad while earning prestigious titles like Player of the Year & The Black Hole. He played for many different teams including the Jest, the Lakers, and ended his career playing for the dark team every Saturday morning until the age of 69. He was also a sports car enthusiast who liked to push the limits of English design with his brother, souping up their 1960s Sunbeam Tiger and racing it on different tracks around the continent.

John was a loving husband, father, and friend to many. He was known for his love of sailing, which he shared with his family and friends, captaining many a voyage on the beautiful Lake of the Woods. Several times he competed in the annual LOWISA regatta, occasionally finding uncharted parts of Canada in the shallower areas of the lake.

In the Winter you could find John in his favorite chair in the library room he designed and built, settling into another history book or great novel. When he wasn’t reading or listening to music, he was working on his ship and train models, or in the boy’s club on a woodworking project.

He had a special talent for bringing in all things that make life better: music, sports, and good conversations - “putting the world to rights" he used to say. He knew how to savour the beautiful things in life, from Oreo cookies to amazing sunsets at the lake.

We would be honoured by any donation to a charity of your choice in John’s name.

“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”

Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows

Sorry for your loss. John and I had reconnected on Facebook after losing track of each other in 62, when I moved to Toronto. We used to walk to school together. Very sad to hear this.

My name is Jim Gregory and I lived across the street from the Tisdale family on Kingston Row in the 50's. Johnny (as I called him then) and I were good friends growing up and I used to spend many hours over at their home in those early days. In John's biography it mentions his childhood days that were spent with a mob of friends in open fields around the local golf course, (The Canoe Club), and being summoned home in the evening by the ring of an old fashioned school bell. Well I was part of that mob. Those were memorable days that I still cherish today. Not only we would go through the gate in his back yard to the Canoe Club golf course in the spring, when the puddles were up to our ankles, we would also play baseball in the open field  across the street from my house with the rest of the mob. And when it started getting close to suppertime, Mrs Tisdale (Betty) would start ringing her school bell, and my Mom (Therese) would start blowing her whistle, letting us all know that it was time to come home for supper. On Saturday afternoons, we would always gather in the Tisdale's family room and sit and watch a TV program called "Horse Opera", which was all about Cowboys and Indians, and we would fight to see who would get to sit in those big comfortable chairs in front of the television. Another moment that I will always remember was when John's father, Dr Paul Tisdale, would get a call from my mother telling him that I wasn't feeling well, and he would immediately pop over to our house and make sure that it wasn't serious. When I was in my teens, we moved away from our home on Kingston Row and we lost touch with the entire Tisdale family, Dr. Paul, Mom Betty, and John's three siblings, Robbie, Frances, and Mary Ann. At this time I send my sincere condolences to John's wife Nancy and the children.

Nancy, Ellen and Stu, we are so sorry for your loss. Indeed, it is a loss that all of Payment street feels. Johnny could be counted on for a friendly wave, a good story and a kind word. As the village elder, he sometimes got the boys in trouble. Whose idea was it to shoot the potato gun straight up in the air? 😊 Other favorite stories involve pumpkins, hockey and of course, his famous magic parka. Johnny was never a party pooper. He could be counted on to stick it out to the bitter end when the conversation was at its best. Gone way too soon. We miss you Jaw Knee Tisdale. You will always be in our hearts. ❤️ Daryl and Diane Fowler and family

John and I were mostly cars. He and his Tiger, I and my latest. We shift drove to Mosport and back picking up Rob in Kitchener. We did two trips to California. We pushed an engine down and up basement stairs. We races at 90 mph on the Salmo-Creston Skyway. We did this some time ago and we had a great time. We then settled down. I will really miss him and the epic drives. My condolences to Nancy and the family.   Hamish

My heartfelt condolences to Rob and family. I only saw Tis a few times over the past many years; but my memories are of him backstopping Siggi and the rest of  us for many late Friday night hockey games at River Heights Arena; often after a Jets home game. We were comforted to know he had our backs. It was an honour to have John as a teammate and friend.

Our deepest condolences to you and family, Nancy. I will always remember John having known him from early days at the Freshwater Institute and especially for decades as a goaltender and teammate with the Lakers Hockey Club. Such a great guy - on the ice, in the room, or in the bar after a game - win or not. Many fond memories of good times and a good man. Ken & Marlene Beaty

We’ve had the pleasure of being Johnnys friend and neighbour for 34 years. We have many great memories of  our visits to the lake with Johnny always giving us a tour on the Bayliner, our Payment Street vacation in Florida, and the many happy hours. Our thoughts are with Nancy, Ellie, Stu, and Johnnie’s family. He will be missed by many. The Murphy family❤️❤️❤️

I went to Windsor School with John for many years and spent many a late afternoon warming up in the Tisdale house walking from school to Kingston Crescent when it was 30 below. I never had to worry about being tops in class with John in my room. We lost touch after grade 9 but I never forgot him and would ask about him when I would see Rob at Rotary or elsewhere or read posts of Tony Dadson on Facebook mentioning John. Upon reading other comments,  I missed a lot by not keeping in touch but glad he enjoyed a wonderful life and condolences to his family on the passing of their husband and father, an all round good person.

In 1982 a couple of us started the Lakers Hockey Club. Based out of the Freshwater Institute in Wpg. John was ‘our goalie’. He backstopped our, at times raucous, team with his steady caring, good, mannered, self-effacing character; both on and off the ice. John was a kind man! Hearing of his death this week has struck me deeply even though I haven’t seen him nor spoken to him since moving to Ontario over 30 years ago. I know that the entire Laker Hockey Club will raise a commemorative glass to John’s memory in our lives.   My sincere condolences to his family on the loss of John in your lives.

What a wonderful person and wonderful  kind and thoughtful friend...knowing him certainly enriched my life....sail on John !....and every time the Bombers play I'll smile and think of you....one of my most vivid and special memmories of John was when we attended a Mark Knopfler concert here in Winnipeg a few years back; it was just a spectacular show and the look on John's face when he played "Brothers In Arms" will forever be instilled in my head...that kind of stunned look of awe and deep appreciation for such an awesome song writer and performer...we shared the same wavelength  for sure. Ya, so when I listen to that song or sing and play it on my guitar  I'll see John's face in my own special video.......and the last verse to that song in my opinion speaks to one of John's values about life....a man of peace and fellowship.❤

I first met John while driving a school bus. We got to know each other as we were killing time before we were to leave on our respective routes, usually in the afternoon. What started as small talk,  usually lead to discussions about an array of topic.  These chats were enjoyable for both parties and this led to a nice friendship that went beyond just bus business. We discovered that we both had an interest and history in sailing, him in the present day myself a part of my youth. We’d share sailing adventures using sailing terms that made both of us laugh as others around us would look on, wondering what these words were. Halyards, cleats, painter, starboard, port, reach, run and pinching… lol We also discovered we both had a true love for bacon and eggs, so this lead to mid morning breakfasts after our morning runs two or three times a week. As we’d pass each other heading into the depot we’d mimic using a utensils, rapidly moving to our mouth. This would lead to a thumbs up or a shake of a head. This non verbal communication was all we needed to know whether or not we were to have a breakfast partner. These meals lead to more wonderful conversations about all subjects that were current. He was a kind, caring and fun loving man. I’ll miss him and our many humorous conversations. All the best to Nancy and family Bill Setka

I had the honor of knowing John for many years and attended many a Bomber game together along with Nancy and friends ! True Blue always and one of the most intelligent football minds ever ! Always loved talking strategy over  some cold beer and peanuts ! I was so happy to be with John and Nancy at the 2021 Western finale where after all the years of disappointment we celebrated going back to the Grey Cup again ! No Bomber fans deserved it more than all of us and being in IG Field that day will be something that I will cherish forever !   Rest in peace John ! Go Blue ! Ian

John was a friend and classmate for 9 years at Windsor School and then a year or two at Glenlawn before his family moved to River Heights and John to Kelvin. I lost track of him at that point. So, much of what was written in his lovely obituary was news, but I’ll always remember him as bright, good-natured, fun-loving and kind. We got our musical starts together in the Windsor School Band. I was impressed that he took on learning the French Horn, possibly the most difficult brass instrument to play. John also played in the elite Windsor School Band Combo, playing the greatest hits of the ‘20s and ‘30’s! I’ll bet there weren’t many similar combos with a French Horn player. No surprise that John loved fast cars. As soon as he got his drivers license, he would take his friends for adventurous rides in his parents’ car, a big green chevy wagon. He loved to go way too fast over the old Elm Park Bridge, scaring the wits out of his passengers and the drivers coming the other way. In winter, he had a trick where he’d be driving us down a quiet St. Vital side street, and suddenly swerve into a snowbank before driving back onto the road. How that car wasn’t wrecked, I’ll never know. Sorry that he’s gone and that I didn’t keep in touch, but it’s great to see that he had such a good life.

The boys of Saturday Morning Hockey will forever miss Tizzie, the Black Hole.  Tizzie was famous for making many old men happy like myself  by letting in lots of cheap goals,  Tizzie also has the distinction of being the only goalie to record a shutout in nearly 40 years of Saturday Mornong Hockey.  Rest in peace.  'Offside' Al Pro.

We had a mutual love - Tigers.  But John was more adventuresome with creating a fearsome machine.  John, I always enjoyed our chinwags when I joined Environment Canada (Oh, that picture that landed us both in hot water).  With your love of whimsy and our almost coincidental birthdays there was much to celebrate until our paths took different directions.  As you weigh anchor this last time, may your journey ahead contain many adventures.

Many of us got to know Tizzy through hockey, starting with the Saint John’s College hockey team and extending through the Saturday morning hockey to ultimately the Saint Norbert old timers hockey. He was a friend to all and absolutely imperturbable when it came to being a goalie.  His laugh and wonderful sense of humour will be sorely missed.
