GRACE ESTHER TOWN

(née PORATH)

November 10, 1928 - November 8, 2022

It is with great love and sadness the Town family announces the passing of Grace; wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Grace was born near Piney, Manitoba and lived on a farm with her family. There were 12 children and it was always busy. Grace helped with chores and looking after her siblings and she attended school until the completion of grade 9. She moved to Winnipeg and lived with two of her sisters. Grace worked as a waitress where she met Tom Town.

Tom and Grace were married May 15, 1948 at a very young age. Tom worked at the railroad for the CNR. Grace was a housewife who raised their only son, Bob. She was a wonderful mother and wife and did an excellent job making ends meet on what was a meagre salary at that time.

In 1949 Tom and Grace built their first house on Brandon Avenue. The small house that was there initially was moved to the Whiteshell on a back lot at Nutimik Lake in 1956. This became a place of wonderful memories for family and friends.

Tom was a member of the YMCA and Grace and Tom were regular participants at Friday Night Sports, a Coed activity group. They were also very involved with friends who met regularly at each other’s homes for Square Dancing. They would move the furniture, roll up the carpets, put the LPs on the high fi and have a real Ho Down.

Tom and Grace loved to travel and would save carefully to ensure they could enjoy vacations. Their trips included Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Europe, the USA and many parts of Canada.

Their favourite spot was Hawaii. They purchased TimeShares and went to Honolulu and Maui for over 30 years.

In 1970 they built their second house south of the city just east of highway 59, outside the floodway on 5 acres. They had a huge summer garden with plenty of vegetables. For many years they would host a corn roast for their friends and family. They enjoyed a good party.

When Tom lot his job with the CN in 1972, Tom and Grace took the Realtors course together. She was very proud of scoring 98% on the final exam. Together they sold real estate for a number of companies before starting their own company, The Town Real Estate. They enjoyed selling houses to people that could then make them homes.

Tom and Grace loved living in the country. They managed to stay there for many years until they moved into an apartment in Winnipeg. A few years later they moved to assisted living until Tom needed more support and was placed in Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home. Grace moved into Independent Living at the attached Tower so they could be close and see each other regularly. Grace would visit Tom 2 and 3 times a day until she fell and broke her shoulder Sept 5 and was in the hospital.

Unfortunately, she contracted Covid in the hospital and subsequently a severe infection which became septic and which she was unable to overcome.

Grace would certainly say she had a wonderful life. She never expected to live as long as she did.

The family would like to thank the staff at Meadowood Manor Towers as well as the fourth-floor staff at Victoria Hospital and the Urgent Care Doctors and nurses for their compassion and support.

Sending you all my deepest heartfelt sympathies on your loss. I have many wonderful memories of aunty Grace . her smile will be with me forever. I always had a great time with them when they lived down the road from me in grand point. I would walk to thier house and they always greeted me with big smiles and lots of stories. She had snacks for me before sending me on my way back home.🙂 as I grew older and moved away i didn't get to see her much but they would always come to my farm for my annual fall corn and potato party. They even won the most consecutive visits in a row certificate. I will always have great memories to cherish.take care.💜💜

Uncle Tom, Bob and family…our sincere condolences on the passing of Aunt Grace.   As I was reflecting on my interactions with Aunt Grace, she lived up to and exemplified her name, grace!!  That says a lot about her character.    Nathan and Judy Hildebrandt

As the seasons change and the snow begins to fall  I miss your voice and wish we could share just one last phone call You were one of a kind, never quite fit the mold Often bending the rules and not doing what you were told You would travel near and far to find the best deal But, watch out for Grandma when she got behind the wheel  You loved your family with great devotion  Your love could move mountains and part and ocean  You had a feisty spirit and an honest heart  You were proud, strong, independent and smart I miss you dearly I’m so many ways  Your bum pats, warm hugs and phone calls on our birthdays  For the ones you loved you always gave your best  But now it is time for you to rest  So, go in peace you’ve earned your sleep Your love and memories we will forever keep ❤️We love you Grandma ❤️
