LUCILLE PHILOMAINE MARIE BOURGEOIS TURKO

April 19, 1928 – February 19, 2023

With heavy hearts we announce the loss of our beautiful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend Lucille Turko. Sadly, she succumbed to heart failure on Sunday, February 19 but passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family.

 

She is predeceased by husband George, daughter Diane (Garth) McConnell, grandson Seth McConnell, and brothers Mathias and Joseph Bourgeois. She is survived by children Richard (Sadie), Charles, Linda (Terry) Martin, and Sue (Miles) Fenwick, son-in-law Garth (Chris) McConnell, as well as grandchildren Crystal, Brian (Shayani), Alexandria, and Miya, and great-grandchildren Jace and Alegra. She will also be greatly missed by all her new friends at her final forever home at the Lindenwood Manor, who were so important in making her final months so happy. She also made many friends in her previous home, a condo she shared with George on Watson Street.

Lucille was born April 19, 1928 in Letellier, Manitoba. Just a small-town girl who didn’t much like school and preferred staying home with her mother, sewing aprons to make ends meet after the accidental passing of her father early in her life. She and her mom Aurora moved to Winnipeg in 1947 to live with Grandpa Lavallee, Aunt Emma and Uncle Bob.

She became a professional seamstress, and was a hardworking, loyal employee at Mid-West Garments for several decades.

​

It was in Winnipeg where she met her future husband George who recognized a good thing when he saw it, and why not? Everyone liked her. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2011.

​

A homebody who loved to create a picture perfect nest, warm, tidy and cozy where she lovingly raised her beloved children. No one could be more helpful, and with so much heart to give, she also took in foster children Bobby, Jimmy, and Jeffrey. And of course, she loved her precious pet dogs Gin, Gina, and Billy, and cats Pussine and Buster.

Lucille loved listening to music and playing her records, especially Daniel O’Donnell. She was an avid reader of books and the newspaper, in addition to dutifully keeping up with current events with television news programs. She was blessed to remain mentally sharp. She certainly could hold her own in colorful discussions about Canadian politics. She enjoyed the intelligence of the contestants on her favorite tv show “Jeopardy”.

 

She also loved to cheer on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Jets. She loved to spend time with friends and family, and she always generously shared her free advice. She was famous for bringing a tubful of goodies, mostly her favorite chocolate and peanut butter marshmallow squares, everywhere she visited. She was also talented at knitting, and wow, did she ever knit some beautiful handmade baby outfits for her grandkids!

Favorite sayings: “Oh c’mon now” and “think about it”!

​

After Lucille survived heart failure 13 years ago, it was a blessing to have our beautiful mom, grandmother, and friend with us for this extra time.
