NORMAN VAN ELSLANDER

January 18, 1936 - February 3, 2023

With great sadness, we announce that Norm passed away on February 3, 2023.

Norm was predeceased by his father Alec and mother Nellie; brother Donald; his wife of 59 years Peggy and daughter Lorilyn. Norm is survived by his children Leonette (Martin) and Todd (Darlene); sisters-in-law Janet Van Elslander and Bev Banks; many nieces and nephews; and life long friend Dale Ostrom.

Norm began his entrepreneurial journey working as a young boy alongside his parents in the family grocery store. From there, he branched out to many other pursuits working in restaurants, hotels and bars. His first start of ownership was a Chicken Delight franchise. Then in the early 1960’s Dad had an idea to start a pizza restaurant. He wanted the name to sound authentic so he called the restaurant, Gondola Pizza. The very first location was on Pembina Hwy and Oakenwald. He worked tirelessly with Mom for many years growing the restaurant into a success with many Canadian franchises. He accomplished his goal and sold the business. Still having the need to be in the restaurant business, he started another venture called Mr Mustard. That, too, was successfully franchised and eventually sold. Gondola Pizza needed his expertise once more so Dad returned to the helm to make it thrive once again. Eventually in the 1980’s Gondola Pizza was sold a second time. Looking for a change Dad ventured into commercial real estate. He built, renovated, owned and operated strip malls. In 1993, they decided to expand on being landlords and purchased The Medicine Rock Café which they operated for 12 years. Then after a two year hiatus from restaurant business they jumped back in again and opened Van Goes Pizza & Chicken. A few years later he decided to step away from the restaurant and sell. Dad was never satisfied staying still. He was constantly looking for the next venture. Whether that be purchasing land and developing it, opening another restaurant or any other idea that came to mind. His creative business sense was always working. Even in his last days he was talking about wanting to build condominiums.

Many in business would know Norm as a shrewd businessman always seeking the best deal possible. If you did business with Norm you were guaranteed two things: a discount was demanded and bills were paid Net 30 days. Those who accepted his terms were assured of a lasting business relationship.

Personally, Norm was a family man who loved his wife, children and extended family dearly. He took great pleasure in providing for his family making sure we were happy, healthy and always protected. Dad always wanted to share food, drinks and good times with those he cared about. He loved making food and telling you to come by and pick it up. He was also a loyal friend who could be counted on to help either financially or if you had a problem he could solve. If he couldn’t help directly then he offered his advice or knew someone who could. He never questioned whether to help only where you needed him to be. He especially enjoyed mentoring others by demonstrating his skills or sharing his knowledge. Most of the time this was cooking related.

As tough as Dad was on the exterior those who knew him, knew he had a kind heart and was a generous soul. There are many examples of Dad having a soft spot for people in need of help.

Dad always wanted to be with the love of his life, Mom and they shared many passions together: cooking and fine dining, their cabin, family & friends at Twin Lakes; and traveling especially to B.C., Hawaii & California.

Norm’s family kindly requests that his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by visiting his tribute page at EthicalDeathCare.com. A photo-biography, as well as memories and stories published by those who knew him, are available there.

In Accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a dual Celebration of Life service for both Norm and Peggy will be held at 2:00 pm on June 22, 2023 at 603 Wellington Crescent.

I am incredibly shocked and saddened to learn of Norman and Peggy Van Elslander's passing.  I worked with the Van's for several years at Medecine Rock Cafe, and was became close friends with Lorilyn, they're daughter.  The Vans taught me incredible restaurant lessons that are with me today and shape my career now.  Gratitude for the bottom of my heart and for all the priceless memories and all the unique people I met  and knew intimately from spending so many days at the Rock.  Thank-you for including me in the Medecine Rock family.  God rest your soul Norm and Peggy, your good people, I will never forget you, I loved you both.

I met Norm about 20 years ago when we did our first commercial real estate deal together. Norm was looking for a tenant for one of his properties and I was looking for space for a client of mine and I ended up negotiating my first lease deal with Norm. Norm was very loyal to me as his agent and over the last 20 years we had a great working relationship that turned into a great friendship. I had numerous business meetings with Norm over the years so I was able to hear many of his interesting life stories and I would have to say that Norm certainly lived life to its fullest. My favorite meetings with Norm were at his home as he would always treat me to some of his cooking such as baking and home-made smoked salmon. RIP Norm. Dave Bergman

Uncle! I miss our chats at the famous granite table. Having a few glasses of wine...1 more for the road or just a halfer. Sharing stories that  made us laugh & also a few tears. So many of your yummy treats.  Even pulling those weeds in your garden.   Thank you Uncle for your love ❤️   Looking forward to being at Twin this Summer, reminiscing with my cousins. Love you Cindy

At the cabin and just read about Norm’s passing and I am so very sad to hear of it.  In a strange way Norm came in and out of my life for almost 50 years ....which is remarkable since I am 55 years old and not family. As a St Vitaler I met Norm when I was 5 years old and his daughter Lorilyn (went to Norberry?) brought me to their house when kids were free range and could do those things way back then and I had a peanut butter sandwich at lunchtime. When I reminded Norm of this he said “ you didn’t get fresh with her did ya” and said I was his first problem daughter boyfriend ( lol) back in 1972. As I grew up close by on Nichol Ave, after our 1 day  relationship I didn’t see see him again until I was his paperboy and delivered to his Dunkirk Drive home for several years. I reacquainted with Norm as an owner of a locksmith company and did work for him for over 20 years and many times he would ask me to “pop over” and we would sit and just yack. The last time I was over there he grabbed me by the arm and showed me his Miele German stove that would not turn on for any reason ....he said some company in Steinbach was the only authorized company to service it and he hadn’t been able to “cook any damn thing on it” and he wondered if I could fix it. And I did!!!!! He loved me for that and he was in awe!!! He would call me up and insist I come over for his smoked salmon and I would trade walleye to him. I gave him more walleye than he did salmon but that was Norm. His friendship made up for that. Oh how he missed Peg! My wife still laughs because onetime Norm asked me if I liked “chicken skin” when he was working at Van Goes and I said I do so he said swing by and he left out for me and when I did show up he had about 2 full trays for me and I told him I can’t eat that much and he just said “yes you do” and just laughed. Another time I was working at a store in Dakota Village and he must have saw me and he called me on the phone and he said swing by right after that job and come enjoy some smoked salmon I just made a batch and I did and it 45 minutes of stories and I said I had to get back to store and he said I had to stay. Norm was “old school cool” and I loved him because he reminded so much of my Dad who has been gone now for 20 years. You knew exactly where you stood with him and he did not suffer fools kindly. What a solid man!! I have so many good stories ....Norm thank you for coming into my life. I will be thinking of you especially when I eat smoked salmon. Godspeed Norm. You did well sir.

As kids we would always refer to Norm and Peggy as Mr & Mrs VAN. They were great neighbours down the way at Twin Lakes beach and yes they both knew how to have a good time. One of my fondest memories of  Norm was him taking out his boat, which I might add was really nice, and offering to take all the area kids skiing behind it. I think Norm got a kick out of seeing how many kids he could pull at once. Norm, you and Peggy will be missed. My sincere condolences to the family.   David Huyghe

My Condolences out to the family.   When I worked at St. George School, many afternoon lunches were sitting on the curb eating his delicious pizza special. Norman and Peggy used to call us the curb side sitters. Norm and Peggy were always so friendly to us and they even used to treat us with something new they created to give them our thoughts of what we thought about it. I was sadden to hear when they sold Van Goes but was happy for the both of them starting a new chapter!  They both will be missed! 💞💙
