Gilbert Van Humbeck

GILBERT “GIL” JOSEPH AUGUSTUS VAN HUMBECK
August 26, 1933 – March 8, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gilbert Joseph Augustus Van Humbeck on March 8, 2025 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, MB.
Gil was born August 26, 1933 to Fred and Elise Van Humbeck and was raised on the family farm in Laurier, MB where he enjoyed a number of years working on the farm, before returning to school and starting his career and family.
Gil was a kind soul who loved his family unconditionally. Although he was strong and brave in challenging times, his core nature was one of gentleness and his Roman Catholic faith was unwavering. Gil was active in his church and sang in the choir for many years. A lifelong sports fan, Gil enjoyed playing golf, curling and was always up for a game of bridge. He was a long time loyal fan of the Montreal Canadiens and became a Winnipeg Jets fan when the team returned to Winnipeg. Gardening was also a passion for Gil and a visit to his home during the summer always included a walkabout in the back garden of the yard followed by a lengthy discussion about the many varieties of flowers and plants in the garden. His bird feeder was always full and a visit in the summer was made complete by the sights and songs of the many birds and woodland creatures that came dine from the nearby forest.
Teaching was Gil's calling and he touched the lives of countless people during his lengthy career in education. Gil worked as a teacher and a guidance counsellor and later become a principal and eventually a superintendent. He believed in creating supportive learning environments where children could succeed and lead.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 26 years, Anne Van Humbeck, his dear daughters Nicole Van Humbeck and April Kite (David), step daughter Brigitte Emes (Bob), step sons Ray Ullenboom (Nancy), Mike Ullenboom (Marianne), Frank Ullenboom (Louise), sister Adrienne (Martin Weiten), brother Ed (Terry Vincent), sisters-in-law, Sue (Chapman), Lucille (Theoret), as well as step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends. Gil was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Elise (Robert) Van Humbeck, sisters, Sally (Pat Daggitt), Elaine (Art Doucette), Marie (Lionel Smith), and Isabel, brothers, Aime (Doreen Hopfner), Ray, and Frank.
A mass will take place in Gilbert’s honour at 11:00a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 at Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Parish located at 4588 Roblin Blvd in Winnipeg.
Gil’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

It is with profound sadness we learned off Gil’s passing. We’ve gotten to know Gil and Anne at our parish at Our Lady Of Perpetual Help. We used to see each other on a weekly basis and unfortunately Covid changed all that. Gil and Anne were inseparable in our eyes and a model of love, care for others and faith. He and they always had a kind word and a smile for you. We will miss his presence at Sunday Mass and the interactions.. To all Gill’s family and friends, our sincere condolences with the loss of a great man!

We remember our Uncle Gil as a kind man with a warm heart and gentle sense of humour. He was always interested in us "kids" even when we hadn't seen him for long stretches at a time. Our mother, Adrienne Weiten (Gil's older sister) was so very sad to hear of his passing as are we all. Mom and Gil were very close as siblings, and he will always remain close in her heart. With love, The children of Adrienne & Marty Weiten (Louise, Ron, Valerie, Jan, Jim & Rob)

I and my family express our deepest condolences to the Van Humbeck family for their loss. Having met Gil only a few times, I heard of him often while working with Ed and Terry, and also from my Aunt Adrienne, his sister. You are a wonderful family of lovely people. My you find solace in the affirmation of your faith, the love of your families, and the knowledge that many friends, neighbours, and acquaintances are praying for you.

i am very saddened to learn of Gil's passing. As a rookie teacher at Beliveau Jr High in 1975 I was so lucky to have Gil as my first principal. He was a real leader, patient and understanding. Gil was always a gentleman - I loved working for him. My sincere condolences to the family.

Gil was a dear friend. He was a good athlete and we enjoyed playing sports together. Gil did not need to win and played for the fun of it. Gil was a warm, kind man. I will miss him.
