ELIZABETH SOPHIE VEERT
(née DOWBENKO)
September 27, 1932 – October 19, 2024
At the Age of 92, Mom passed away peacefully with family at her side.
Elizabeth was born on the family farm on the outskirts of Winnipeg. She was the youngest of five girls. She enjoyed telling stories of milking the cows, harvest time, and her pony, Duchess. She walked to Wentworth School, but in the winter her Dad would take her and the neighbours in their horse-drawn sleigh. As a teenager, Elizabeth moved to the city, and lived with cousins, to attend Saint Mary’s Academy for grades nine to twelve.
Elizabeth is survived by her three daughters, Valerie (Ed) Sigurdsson, Sandra (Gord) Cole, and Angela (Mike) Gottfred; nine grandchildren: Adam and Matthew Kwiecien, Phillip Cole, Julia Penner, Vanessa, Christina and Frank Veert, and Gus and Jack Gottfred; As well as her nine precious great-grandchildren: Olivia, Levi, Oaklan, Paige, Kate, Isaak, Frank, Walter and Nicholas.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, Frank in 2000; her son, John, in 2022; and her four sisters, Mary, Olga, Gladys, and Verna.
Mom was an avid knitter, most recently of her famous dish cloths. She also enjoyed watching football, doing puzzles, and the machines in casinos.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the Home-Care workers, the staff at 3E Riverview, and the clergy of St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30am on Friday, November 1, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Avenue, with the Rev. Fr. Bohdan Lukie the celebrant. A reception will be held, in the church, right after the service.
Elizabeth’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

My sincere condolences to the entire family and friends, as you mourn the passing of a truly beautiful spirit, the matriach of your family. When last I visited her in her apartment, she was so proud to show me around, give me the history on some of her wall hangings, made me pick out a set of dishcloths and then we settled into conversation with the cartoons on the T.V. running in the background. She gave me an update on everyone, recalled a few of my shared memories with Valerie and then we parted with a hug and a wave! Til we meet again...Vichnaya pam'yat!

Deepest sympathy goes out to you Angie and family in the loss of your mom. Although I didn't personally know your mom, the stories you shared from time to time at work, and the beautiful video tribute tells a wonderful story of a matriarch who lived a full life with much love of her family. May you take those memories and tuck them away forever. Hugs and love to you Ang,

My condolences to Elizabeth's family on her passing. She was an avid volunteer for some of my programs at Seven Oaks General Hospital - always willing to help out and share a great joke. A wonderful sense of humour and such a giving individual. She will be missed.
