TERRY VERMEIRE

February 9, 1955 – December 16, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Terry Vermeire on December 16th, 2024.

He was predeceased by his beloved son Steven in 2006; his parents, Rachel (née Beernaerts) and Marcel Vermeire; and his in-laws, Yvette (née Gueret) and Marcel Dufault.

Terry is survived by his wife of 43 years Evelyne (née Dufault); son Scott and his wife Diane; his daughter Amanda and her husband Jean-Philippe; five grandchildren, Zacharie and Dominique Vermeire; Sophie, Charlotte, and Felix Gervais.

Terry was born on Wednesday February 9th, 1955, in Swan Lake Manitoba. He grew up on a farm and was the oldest of three boys. Little did he realize when he started high school that his future wife was amongst his classmates. Nine years later, on July 25th, 1981, he married Evelyne, the love of his life. They settled down in Winnipeg in 1981, and in 1982 they bought their first house in St Vital where they raised three children. He often said that the most special days of his life were when his children were born. Terry had treasured the new chapter of fatherhood and became a very involved dad. His family was everything to him! He loved watching his children grow into strong, independent adults and was always very proud of their accomplishments. He was always there whenever they needed a helping hand.

Terry was later blessed with five grandchildren, who always made him smile. He loved to play, go on excursions, and do many activities with them. He would never turn down the opportunity to bring his family for ice cream. He enjoyed going to the beach, where he would join his grandchildren in water play, dig in the sand, build sandcastles or throw a football around. At the cabin, Terry enjoyed taking them for walks in the woods, fishing, hiking, and frog catching. He also liked to sit around the campfire, which of course needed to include smores!

Even though Terry was a man of few words, he always managed to let his family know that he loved them very much.

Terry had a great sense of humor and a fun-loving personality which helped him create strong friendships at work, in the neighborhood, while playing cards, while curling, and when going on trips. His playful personality brightened the lives of people around him. The strong bond he developed with his friends and his extended family was a testament of how great of a man he was.

Terry had a passion for music and sports. He could often be found listening to his favorite music, as well as watching baseball, curling, and hockey games. He would try to convince Evelyne to attend concerts or sporting events with him, other times he would go with friends.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all the people who offered their support during the last nine months; to the staff at Cancer Care Manitoba during his treatments; to the workers at Riverview Health Centre for their compassion and the wonderful care they provided for him. They are all true angels here on earth.

Terry will be deeply missed by his family and friends. A Celebration of his Life will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 603 Wellington Crescent (First Universalist Unitarian Facility).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cancer Care or the Riverview Health Centre foundation

“Fly high Terry, and watch over us

from heaven with Steve.

I will meet you at the bench!”

Terry’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

This broke my heart. I worked with Terry many many years ago at the Help Home Discount Center. He was so friendly, helped me out with things I didn't know about heating, electrical, plumbing, I knew the lighting part! He was always there for me. He was my mentor, had a great sense of humour and was just the nicest most decent guy. We lost touch after we left there but I have thought about him thru the years. He left a mark on my soul. Looks like he had a wonderful family and a good life so I am happy for him. I know he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this sad time. Much Love to you....Joanne Popeski

Terry was part of the team when I started my career at Western Supplies many years ago on Sherwin Rd. What an amazing mentor and freind to have as a young man. Always willing to teach. Always made work enjoyable. Made you proud to be part of the organization. Although my move back to Thunder Bay ended our direct contact, I'd drop him a line now and then just to keep in touch and crack a few jokes. He will be missed! My condolences to his family and friends.

Terry.... such a kind hearted, fun-loving friend! I'm so glad we got to see you recently. We were lucky enough to work together all those years ago... good times...great stories!

We were friends when your kids were being born and although we didn't visit often.... when we did, it was like old times. Terry's family meant everything to him. He was very proud of all of you. He especially loved you Evelyne. You were indeed the love of his life!

We will miss you my friend.

Dear Terry, what can I say besides I will miss you beyond words. You were more than my brother in law, you were my brother. I still remember the day I was waiting for you and Evelyne in your car, and I found a pack of cigarettes. When you both got back, I asked who had left cigarettes in your car? Oops. I am still so sorry I ratted you out! But I think you stopped smoking, so sorry not sorry!

I love you so much my brother and my heart aches for your kids/and in-laws and Vline. Like I said to you in the hospital, you know I love you right? And you smirked and said, no...I don't know.

Your little sis, Michelle. ❤️
