JOHN GREGORY WALKER
"Greg"
November 11, 1942 – May 7, 2025
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our much-loved husband, father and grandfather John “Greg” Walker on May 7, 2025, at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Mb at the age of 82. He leaves to mourn his wife Kathy; daughter Kim; son Brent; daughter in law Janet; and his grandchildren, Payton, Amelia and Logan. He was very proud of both his children and his grandchildren. He could often be heard recalling stories about his kids and later of his grandkids to everyone he knew.
Greg was born November 11, 1942, to John and Patricia Walker at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg and grew up as an only child. Greg grew up in Winnipeg and graduated from Kelvin High School. He went on to receive his Teaching Certificate from the Manitoba Teacher’s College on Shaftsbury, in Winnipeg, and he started teaching in the fall of 1964 for the St. Vital School Division at Windsor School. A few years later while still teaching at Windsor School, he met a new teacher by the name of Kathy Binne, and they went on to become married and raised their family in the St. Vital area. Greg and Kathy enjoyed a long-married life until his passing, which was a few months short of their 56th wedding anniversary. After getting married, starting a family and while still teaching full time, he went back and earned his B.A. from the University of Winnipeg and his B.Ed. from the University of Manitoba. Greg continued teaching until 1998 when after 34 years of classroom teaching, he decided it was time to retire and enjoy life even more fully.
Greg was always willing to help others out and loved a good joke. His sense of humour was incredible, and you were always guaranteed a good laugh when he was around. Greg enjoyed recounting stories of the fun that he and his cousin Graham and his boyhood friends got up to while growing up. The stories often left you wondering how, they all made it to adulthood, and their fun did not end there. Greg was a social person and enjoyed having friends over for a drink and would visit with friends that lived where their travels took them. Greg and Kathy enjoyed travelling and in their later years they enjoyed going on cruises in the Caribbean. Upon arrival home from each of their many trips, Greg could be found on his computer researching and planning their next vacation.
Greg had a passion for teaching and learning, and guaranteed when we went on family vacations there was always some undercover learning for us, disguised as fun. Greg was always a wealth of what we affectionately called his “useless knowledge”. You could ask him any question on any subject and guaranteed he knew enough to answer the question like he was an expert on that subject.
Greg had asked that there not be any service following his passing and will be interred later with his immediate family in attendance. If you so desire, please consider a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society or to a charity of your choice.
In memory of a life well lived,
Until we meet again.

He was my teacher at Lavalee. He was an amazing teacher and I'm sorry I missed seeing him when I visited Winnipeg. Try not to take time for granted, no one knows what tomorrow holds.

Mrs. Walker (Miss Binney!) I am so sorry for your loss. I can't imaging the size of the Greg-shaped hole in your heart after 56 years of marriage. Mr. Walker was my geography teacher in Jr High at Windsor. He was memorable for his breadth of knowledge, his capacity for conveying the necessary subject matter and having a very strong voice when vexed (not by me! ). He taught all four of us Turner Girls, and teased that he was glad to see the last of us when I graduated to Glenlawn. He gave me an appreciation for the wide world and made me excited to see it ... I have now traveled to 104 countries. May he rest in peace.

I was proud to work alongside Greg at Lavalee School in the old S.V.S.D. days. He was a valued member of that staff - a real team player.
That was at a time when there were almost no male teachers in the Primary Grades. Greg was brave enough, competent enough, and committed enough to move from his known role at the Grade 6 level to one with Grade 3, and was a brilliant success there. By doing that, he took a key role in our forward-thinking team effort at that school.
In later years Greg has kept in touch with so many old colleages and friends by finding and forwarding a great selection of interesting and fascinating e-mails - wonders of the world , and 'fall-over- laughing' signs and jokes. We are all going to miss seeing his name in the side bar, and know that a gloomy day might just have a few funfilled , or joyful moments - courtesy of Greg.
Thanks for the memories, Greg! P.S. That is SUCH a lovely photograph your family chose. Perhaps the 'School Photo Day Special' ? What a beautiful smile....

Although Greg was my only cousin on my mother's side, we saw little of each other as my family moved to Ontario when I was 5 and Greg was 7. Our paths crossed when his family travelled east to visit extended family in Halifax with stops in Ontario. And in our adult and retired years I visited Greg and Kathy when in Winnipeg and they visited me when travelling in Florida. I always enjoyed his interesting views, opinions and sense of humour. I will miss his emails and Facebook postings.
Rest in peace, Greg.

I had Greg as a teacher at Windsor. He was great !! He never used the chalkboard. He would always dictate all of our notes to us to make sure we wrote them down correctly. He said later on when you go to university, you will now be trained and an expert at taking Fast accurate notes, which will benefit you in your studies.. naturally at the time being junior high school students, we never believed him but later on in my post, secondary education he was absolutely correct the skills he taught us in listening carefully and recording facts and information accurately benefitted me a lot. My wife was a teacher for over 30 years in the Saint Patel division who got to know Greg and Cathy through work. He was always tons of fun.!!! Greg you left far too early........

I am so very saddened to hear of Greg's passing. He was an outstanding teacher and an uproariously funny friend. He talked me into working with him for two summers at Folorama, and the shinanigans and funny episodes he got us into ,were HILARIOUS!!!
My thoughts go out to his wife Kathy, and children Kim and Brent and his family

I taught with Greg for a number of years at Lavalee School where I was just learning the trade and he was the veteran. I learnered so much about teaching from Greg. He was always someone you could rely on and look up to. And yes Greg just about knew everything. It is an honour to have known him and had his frienship.

Greg was always a pleasant member at our twice-yearly retired teachers' luncheons in St. Vital. He was much too young to leave us and be missed. Our sincere condolences to his family.
