ELIZABETH “BETTY” WALLBANK

(née GIESBRECHT)

March 27, 1937 – September 20, 2024

The family is sad to announce that our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother passed away September 20, 2024 at the age of 87. She was predeceased by her husband Clyde on August 24, 1997. Betty leaves behind her four sons, Jim Stiles (Karen), Jerry Stiles, Dale Stiles (Adele), Mike Stiles (Terry); along with several grandchildren and stepchildren. Betty was especially close to her stepdaughter Sandy Silva and step-grand-daughter Judy Lynn Hetherington. Betty also leaves behind three brothers, Bill (Marg), Dan, and Garry (Donna). She was predeceased by her brother Henry (Linda).

Betty was born in Altona, Manitoba on March 27, 1937 to Peter and Gertrude Giesbrecht. She grew up on a dairy farm in Oak Point, Manitoba. Upon finishing school, Betty found work at the “Home for Incurables” in Portage la Prairie.

While attending a dance with one of her work friends, Betty met her future husband Vernon Stiles who was in the armed forces and stationed at RCAF Station MacDonald. Betty and Vern were married at the MacDonald base on November 26, 1955. Over the course of their marriage, they were stationed in many Canadian locations including Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and Alberta.

After her divorce in 1975, Betty took a bookkeeping course in Winnipeg which led to a job at the Marlborough hotel. A few years later, she took a night job in the accounting department of CIBC. It was here that she met her second husband, Clyde Wallbank. They were married on March 27, 1982.

Betty enjoyed several activities such as sewing, knitting, crocheting, square dancing, and singing in the church choir. She loved the color blue and a good game of Scrabble. Her favorite activity was taking road trips with Clyde in their RV.

The family would like to thank the staff of Heritage Lodge for their care and compassion. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on October 11, 2024 at St. Thomas Anglican Church, 1567 William Avenue W. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Siloam Mission would be appreciated if friends so desire.

Betty's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Deepest Sympathy to the family on the passing of mom, grandmother and friend. I worked with Betty for years at CIBC Data Centre. We had many laughs and very nice conversations. She was an excellent listener and a shoulder to lean on.

REST IN PEACE BETTY!

When I met her as a teenager she always worried I was too thin and tried to make sure I got good meals at her house. Betty will be missed by many.
