My mother was bright from childhood and scored first place provincially in the entrance examination, earning the nickname “female top scholar”. To start working sooner and fund her two younger sisters’ education, she gave up high school and attended a medical assistant school instead. Both sisters excelled academically and were recommended by Changzhou High School for admission to Tsinghua University and Suzhou Medical College respectively.
After graduation, she first taught at Wuxi Medical College (the predecessor of Wuxi Health School). Later she worked as an obstetrician‑gynaecologist at Wuxi Maternal and Child Health Hospital, where she was authorized to prescribe anaesthetics. Owing to her diligent performance, hospital leaders planned to provide her with further professional development opportunities. However, the Cultural Revolution began. Her husband suffered political persecution, and the whole family was implicated. In 1969, they were sent down to Shiyan Commune (now Shiyan Town), Dongtai County in northern Jiangsu. There she continued practising as an obstetrician‑gynaecologist at the local hospital. Wherever she worked, with superb medical skills and a conscientious, hard‑working attitude, she treated and saved countless patients and earned high praise from the public.
The family returned to Wuxi in 1975. Rather than resuming her post at the original hospital, she chose to teach at Wuxi Health School. She trained large numbers of urgently needed nursing professionals for the country. Many of her students later became key members of the medical community; one of them went on to serve successively as Deputy Director of the Wuxi Municipal Health Bureau and President of the Wuxi Hospital Association. She was awarded the professional title of Associate Chief Physician after retirement.
Due to the historical circumstance that one of her cousins joined the army and went to Taiwan in 1949, she was never able to join the Communist Party of China. This was a severe emotional blow to her. She devoted nearly all her energy to study and work and had little time for family matters. She lived frugally all her life, quietly dedicating herself to society and her family. She will always be remembered by us.
