MICHAEL (MICK) JOSEPH WEAVER

On the longest day of the year, the summer solstice, under a strawberry moon and with Jan by his side, Mick left us for his new life. His caring, generous heart was too tired to continue. Jan kept him company and it was a sad but wonderful last day full of love, readings, music and messages from family and friends across the globe.

Mick is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jan Watters, and his siblings, Marie Cherry (Alan) and Tony Weaver (Sue) of Australia. Brother-in-law to Colleen Watters, David Potter (Lyn Marlowe) and Aynsley Sosinski (Rich), Kansas.

Uncle and great uncle to his nieces, nephews and greats: In North America; Alexis, Drew, Noah, Mila, Max (NY); Kate, Marc, Huckleberry, Malin (Lawrence, KS). In Australia: Katie, Zach, Arthur (Sydney); Alexis, Jacob (Sydney); Kristina, Jonathon, Hayden, Gus (Lithgow); Gareth, Alex (Sydney); Morgan, Harry, Ember (Nowra); Josh, Matthew, Blake, Emily (Nowra).

Mick was pre-deceased by his parents, Angela and Alf Weaver of Lithgow, Australia, and his in-laws, Jean and Ross Potter of Winnipeg.

Mick was born in Sydney, Australia, and lived his early years in Lithgow, NSW. After leaving school, he was apprenticed as an electrician, at the Wallerawang power station, continuing to work for the Electricity Commission of NSW for a several years after that. The call of travel beckoned and he and a friend travelled Australia, working seasonally at a ski lodge in the Snowy Mountains.

Following this gap year, Mick served for two terms with the Signals Corps of the Australian Army, based in Townsville. He pursued diving, yoga, and other hobbies while in the army. Mick explored “caving” with a Sydney Caving group, exploring limestone caves that were off the beaten path and not open to the public. After leaving the military he returned to Lithgow to work rotating shifts at the Wallerawang power station as an Assistant Power Plant Operator until he moved to Canada in April 1993.

Mick and Jan met when Jan was on a teaching exchange in Lithgow, Australia in 1990. They both attended the Hash House Harriers running group which met weekly. Working rotating shifts, Mick only attended the running group when he wasn’t working which was about 1/3 of the time. They went on a couple of bike-ride dates - one to meet his parents and sister and brother-in-law for afternoon tea. Jan returned to Canada in January, 1991 and Mick came for a visit in March. A day trip to the lake, walking across the frozen lake with Ross and Jan, showed him that winter is to be welcomed and he enjoyed how much fun it was to try new things in such a different environment.

Something must have impressed him as he returned that summer and cycled from Banff to Jasper. Mick applied for Canadian residency and when Jan came for a visit at Christmas in 1992 they decided to get married in order to support the process. Mick was approved to come to Canada in the spring of 1993.

Mick took on many roles in Canada, working for Lions Housing corporation, running his own lawn care and snow clearing business for years (Snow Mow Plus), as well as working with his brother-in-law, David, in the construction department on various movies being filmed in Manitoba.

Mick embraced life in Canada from winter activities to time at Caddy Lake. There was no task he shied away from nor any temperature too cold for a snowshoe or to shovel the driveway.

Jan’s retirement in 2014 allowed more time for travel, and they enjoyed two river trips in Europe. Increased time at the lake and at Reh Fit were enjoyable pastimes. Mick and Jan were very fortunate to be able to travel to Australia for a final time to celebrate Christmas 2025. Lots of wonderful memories with family and friends were made, including glamping at the Taronga Zoo with the lions roaring 25 m away, time at Bateman’s Bay and of course an Aussie Christmas with family.

Mick and Jan were well aware he was in the “bonus rounds” after his cardiac event at Caddy in 2016. They are both so thankful for the extra nine years of love, fun, companionship, and travel. They are forever grateful for those years, to the South East Whiteshell Fire Department, STARS, St Boniface Hospital, and the Reh Fit centre.
