Jamie Welwood

MICHAEL “JAMIE” JAMES WELWOOD
(AKA: Mr. Fun)
January 10, 1960 – May 23, 2025
After a courageous struggle with medical issues, Jamie lost his final battle at Winnipeg's Grace Hospital at the age of 65. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Jamie (the name he preferred to go by) is survived by his sisters, Val (Jack), Cheryl (Jerry), Rose, Patti; brothers, Robert (Fran), Darrell, and Rick (Louise); and brother-in-law Barry Cooper. Predeceased by his mother Muriel Welwood; father Harold Welwood; sister Linda Cooper (née Welwood)
Jamie was born in Winnipeg and grew up first in the Wolseley area before his family moved to Winnipeg’s West End. After graduating from High School and earning the Sears award for “Best in Class” in the graphic arts program, Jamie started his career in the printing business at the University of Manitoba Print Shop. After over 10 years the print shop closed their doors. Jamie found jobs with a variety of small print shops to support his lifestyle. His passion was officiating Hockey all across Manitoba. He settled on officiating the many ASHL divisions ran out of Canlan Ice Plex when he was not working there as a Convener. It was in 2006 that he accepted the position as a Sports League Convener at Canlan Sports Arena and worked there up until the pandemic hit in 2021. In addition to working at Canlan, Jamie helped out a friend performing bindery related jobs for Alley Cat Printing when needed. Growing up Jamie worked as a Skating rink attendant and grounds keeper at Sargent Park arena and the speed skating oval.
Jamie’s sole purpose in life was to make people laugh. He had a gregarious personality that allowed people to feel comfortable around him. Jamie grew up loving sports. He played competitive Hockey, Fastball, Badminton and Racquetball. Eventually moving to play for a variety of beer-league Hockey and Baseball Teams. For over 10 years he played and coached the Lethal Weapons in the Super Summer Mixed Baseball League. At one point in his life, he even ran a marathon just to prove he could do it. Jamie also co-founded the Top Shelf Hockey League which he helped organize including refereeing many of the games.
Jamie lost his True Blue Bomber fan, Cam Caldwell, a few years ago who he travelled with to attend many grey cup festivities. It was not uncommon for Jamie or both of them to end up in the newspaper of the host city all decked out in their Bomber gear with Kielbasa necklaces. He will be missed at our Blue Bomber tailgate get-togethers, but will never be forgotten.
It seemed like no matter where Jamie travelled with his long list of friends he would always run into someone he knew no matter the destination. Jamie was the Bus Chaperon on many Sun Ice Bus Tours. On one occasion he showed up for a themed event dressed up as Mr. Fun and his alias was born to stick with him for the rest of his life. In addition, his Bus was always the liveliest on many sport packaged bus tours he helped out with for D & J’s Excellent Adventures.
Jamie was a jack of all trades and loved troubleshooting problems. If you needed help to build a fence, storage shed, your cabin lifted and levelled, Jamie was the guy to call. He even turned himself into Mrs. Doubtfire to help nanny his friend’s kids to make sure they made it to school (They may have been a little late a few times). If someone needed a Santa Claus, Mr. Fun had the suit ready to step up and entertain. Whatever connection you were looking for in the trades or anything else in general. Mr. Fun would provide you with a name of who to call.
His friends were always somewhat amazed of his memory and what he recalled to share during the many evening conversations we had with him over the past few years. Jamie worshipped his life experiences. Although he did not see much of his immediate family, you knew that he loved them just by the way he described stories about them growing up together and some of their accomplishments.
Anyone and Everyone -
Who ever met MR Fun!
Will always have good memories
that will follow with a smile!
A celebration of life will take place from 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm on Thursday, June 19 at the Airport Motor Inn Banquet Room located at 1800 Ellice Ave.
Jamie’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Mr. Fun - Jamie Welwood. Not a kinder soul you would ever meet. Always in a happy mood, and made sure you were too.
I met Jamie on one of my bus tours with Sun Ice Tours to Sugar Hills, Minnesota at an event we put on called "MILLERFEST". It was an annual trip of ski bums that would party on the hill with kegs of Miller beer. ( Not that I remember him skiing ) but he liked to party.
One year Jamie showed up in costume dubbed MR. FUN! Each year people would come to Milerfest in costume skiing and partying with MR. FUN! And thus the name, the myth, the legend was born! Always willing to lend a hand and make sure you were taken care of and having fun..
He extended his good nature to our Apple River Tours to Minneapolis / Wisconsin. and became one of my tour directors. His genuine smile and friendly face was a fixture on our tours.
I lost contact with him over the years, but if ever a chance to meet he would never shy away and always made sure to say hello.
To his family and friends he will be surely be missed..
Thanks for the laughs and thanks for the memories Jaimie. You left a lasting impression on many many people over the years. Rest in Peace MR. FUN, and cheers on full life of fun. You were one of kind.

It’s hard to put into words the kind of person Jamie was — he made his way into the heart of every family in his own unique way. He was a fun-loving soul who was always willing to lend a hand, to a friend. He took care of my home with pride and care, whenever my family travelled, never missing a detail in keeping the place clean and animals lived and well fed. He loved children and animals with a kindness and patience that made me trust him completely — and that trust, as any parent knows, is everything.
And then there was my little dog, Oreo who lit up the moment Mr. Fun walked through the door. Dogs have a way of sensing who’s good, and mine adored him. That says it all.
What made Jamie special wasn’t just what he did, but how he did it — with humility, humor, and heart. He never asked for thanks, but always gave more than expected. I enjoyed our conversations, his easy laugh, and the feeling that when he was around, everything was just a little warmer — not just in the house, but in life. His presence brought peace and warmth. His absence has left a quiet ache among many of us.

All Jamie ever wanted was for everyone to have fun. His aka Mr Fun or Funster was perfect for him. He especially loved to entertain the fans at the Bomber Home games and at many Grey Cups across Canada. We miss you dearly. RIP my two stepping partner. ❤️😞

There was never a time that we travelled or got together that Jamie didn't make me laugh. He was one of a kind, and definitely Mr. Fun. A West End Legend who knew how to entertain a crowd but he also had a big heart and would do anything g to help a friend. I will miss him at the tailgates and Bomber games and our short weekly visits. I will even miss the 11:00pm phone calls. RIP Funster.

Jamie took me under his wing in my late teens and if not for him, I would not have as many connections or friends in the sports world.
you definitely earned the name "Mr. Fun".
thank you for being in mine and my families lives 🙏🏼
