IAN WHIKLO

May 18, 1980 – April 3, 2023

Surrounded by his family, Ian passed away on April 3, 2023 after a long battle with heart issues. We are heartbroken!

 

Ian is survived by his loving parents, Pam and Les and his sister Lauren. He also leaves an extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins to mourn his passing.

 

Growing up, Ian excelled at all sports – downhill skiing and Kung Fu were two of his favourites.

 

Everyone who knew Ian will remember him as a kind, caring and compassionate person. He always took the side of the underdog and fought for them. He was well-read and interested in many things, which made conversations with Ian engaging.

 

Equally well known among those who will fondly remember him is his love of animals. Ian befriended every dog or cat that crossed his path. He will be especially missed by Willow, his fur buddy who was always by his side.

 

Most of all Ian loved his family and was loved deeply by them. His passing has left a huge hole in all of our hearts. He will truly be missed every day of our lives.

 

We would like to thank Dr. Stanley Eng and his assistant Carla for their years of compassionate care. Special thanks to the amazing St. Boniface Hospital MICU staff for their support and comfort during this difficult time.

 

No formal funeral service will be held. A private family memorial will take place in the summer.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ian’s memory to the Bruce Oake Recovery Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

I'm so sorry to hear about Ian. Condolences to all his family and friends. My last exchange with him was a wonderful phone conversation in which he said many moving things to me about our friendship. He was a talented martial artist and it was my honour and privilege to be his teacher.

I hadn't seen Ian in a long while. I'm terribly sorry to hear about his passing. I fondly remember playing hockey with Ian. He enjoyed making sure nobody would take a whack at me when covering the puck up. We curled together one year, possibly grade 7 or 8. I remember the two of us trying to one-up each other with ridiculous tall tales as our folks drove us to or from a sporting event. We'd see each other on the bus heading to school once we made our way to Tec Voc. After graduating, we ran into each other a few times. Ian was always super approachable and easy to chat with. His smile made everyone at ease.  He will be missed. You have my sympathies.

My deepest condolences. I have many memories playing sports with Ian growing up. He was a lethal left handed pitcher that helped take us to the provincials. I also golfed a lot with Ian. I was with him when he got a hole in one on the 7th hole at Larters. To this day the only one I have witnessed… Very sad news
