ELIZABETH (BETTY) WIELER

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth (Betty) Wieler on November 30, 2022 at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg

Elizabeth was born in 1942 on the small family farm near Elm Creek Manitoba during a snowstorm. She was the fourth in a family of five girls and one boy, born to Peter and Nettie Wieler.

Betty excelled at school and after graduation she moved to Winnipeg to attend Secretarial College. She was later employed by London Life Insurance Company and eventually became Office Manager. Throughout her career she developed many friendships, some of which continue to this day. As much as she loved her work, she was fortunate to experience Freedom 53 which was two years earlier than her company’s slogan.

Betty wanted to see the world and she travelled extensively. She planned her many trips across the globe and spoke often of being able to experience much of the world’s beauty. She knew how fortunate she was. As the years went by, she was content to spend a good part of each winter in many of the southern States where she was able to escape Manitoba’s winters.

Betty was a proficient seamstress and sewed for friends, the church as well as her own clothes. She also sewed countless Halloween costumes. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles.

After retirement, Betty volunteered at a variety of organizations, using her many skills to help others.

Betty was predeceased by her parents and her sisters Lillian, Dorothy and Jean. She is survived by her sister Florence and brother Jim. Also remembering her are many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She had many friends across Canada. Betty enjoyed their many email chats.

Especially mourning Betty’s passing is her best friend Ann Wiebe and her husband Bob and their family. Ann and Betty’s friendship started in school and endured for 64 years. Betty was also very close to her cousin Cheryl Nachtigal. Betty was so grateful for Cheryl’s delicious ready to eat meals as well as her friendship. Betty had a close relationship to her niece Kim Debreczeni who will miss her guidance and support.

Betty was able to live independently until her diagnosis with Multiple Myeloma. She was admitted to hospital at the end of September and passed away from renal failure, a complication of the cancer.

We would like to thank the doctors, nurses and health care aides at St Boniface and Riverview for their compassion when caring for Betty.

Betty was devoted to God and was a member of the Faith Bible Church where she made valuable friendships. Pastor James Barber and Betty’s good friend Bob Wiebe, two men she admired and respected, will conduct the service at Faith Bible Church 600 Minto St, Winnipeg on December 14, 2022, at 11am. The service will be taped and posted to faithbiblechurch.ca on the evening of Dec 14.

Betty’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

My life partner, Julie, and I remember my Auntie Betty (I am her sister, Lil's, daughter) coming out to Vancouver Island, B.C. in 2009 and sharing several weeks with us touring the Island.  We especially enjoyed sharing time with Auntie Betty and our special friends, Viola and Ray, in their family vacation home in Sproat Lake, B.C.  Our hearts will always smile at how much Auntie Betty enjoyed chatting and sharing time with Viola and Ray, who had been Missionaries for much of their lives in Canada and abroad.   As a young woman, when I was attending the U of M, I remember Auntie Betty hiring a taxi in a snowstorm to pick me up and take me to meet her at Stage West, a lovely dinner theatre in Winnipeg.  It was a huge treat and I will always be thankful for her inspiring me to enjoy live theatre!  Rest in Peace Auntie Betty ❤  love always Tanis Carter (nee Treffry/Wieler) and Julie Collins

A beautiful tribute to a beautiful friend. We have lost a selfless person and prayer warrior. Heaven has gained an angel and Saint. Looking forward to seeing her again. Jan Wiebe
