SANDRA (SASS) WIEST

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Sandra (Sass) Wiest. A beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. Sandra passed at the age of 78, on February 2, 2023.

Sandra is survived by her children Terri, Traci, and Kathryn (Brian), her seven grandchildren Jordan, Evan, Michael, Hunter, Charlotte, Ava, Nate and her brother Dennis (Karen). She was predeceased by her husband Harold, her sister Patricia, her brother-in-law Ted, her great grandchild Oliver, and her son-in-law Darwin.

Sandra was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. One of her first jobs out of school was with Air Canada. This is where she first laid eyes on Harold, and even though he was eight years her senior she knew he was the one for her. They married in 1965 and over the next 10 years happily built a family of three girls. In 1978 they moved to Regina and settled there for many years. Those years were filled with family and friends. Sandra spent many years working at the Glen Elm Branch of Regina Public Library and still has long lasting friendships from her time there. After Harold’s death, Sandra retired and moved back to Winnipeg and happily lived in Charleswood for the last 18 years.

Sandra was in her 60s the first time she ever lived by herself and she loved her condo, where she made many new friends. She loved planning and attending the coffee parties for the building. She enjoyed all the social events - the card making sessions, the game nights, the barbecues, and special dinner parties.

Sandra loved to craft, we all have cards, scrapbooks, dolls, clothing, crocheted blankets, ceramics, and Christmas ornaments that she has made over the years. She also loved to laugh, and ‘kibbitz’ around with anyone who was willing, much to the embarrassment of her daughters during their teenage years.

Her greatest joy was her family and she loved to spoil them when she could. Every time a new grandbaby appeared she wanted to be in the thick of it, cuddling and snuggling and helping where she could. Even when new fur babies came along she was always good for a snuggle. Harold used to say she smelled like a big vanilla cookie and that’s why kids and pets loved her so. But it wasn’t just immediate family, she was very close with her nephew Ted and his wife Connie and spent many happy hours visiting them at their acreage just outside the city. She often referred to it as one of her happy places.

She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Sandra’s memory to Siloam Mission or to Diabetes Canada. Sandra donated to many charities but these two were particularly close to her heart.

The family would like to thank the staff of 4South at Victoria General Hospital for all the care and kindness they showed Sandra over the last months. It was so appreciated.

Sandra and family would also like to thank the MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying) team for their kindness through the end-of-life process.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, February 7, at 603 Wellington Crescent (First Unitarian Universalist at Academy Road.)

Sandra's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Forever Friends  Sandra and family had moved to Regina about the same time Wayne & I and family did. We were next door neighbours and over the years shared many celebrations. Afternoon tea, exploring a variety of crafts and just plain enjoying each other's company while we thought up jokes to play on friends and family. We could get away with a lot since our yards were only separated by a very small gate.  We spent a lot of time working on the next big event. One such event was when she filled our car and garage with balloons for Wayne's birthday. He was half asleep,  going out to the garage to start the car, but, with all those balloons flying at him, he was soon wide awake.  Over the Hill birthday parties. Not the year Wayne turned 40, but 41, when he was really (what we thought then was old)  over the Hill!!!! Plus he never suspected a thing.  Another special event was Harold's curling theme birthday. She helped bake and decorate his cake like a curling sheet. Harold was over the moon with happiness.  He couldn't believe what we had organized without him finding out.  These are just a few of the many grateful memories we made together and they will live on forever.  I think of fun and love when I think of Sandra . She was a very dear friend.  Like a bird singing in the rain, let grateful memories survive in a time of sorrow.  Love you Sandra, Elaine

Who is Older Sandra and I had an ongoing joke about who was the oldest. Being that her birthday was in January I always kidded her about being older , how old are you, and you are sooo old.  But of course my birthday would soon arrive in March, and the her opinion was, now we are the same age and I am old too. Now we would both be "old as dirt". Always searching for what would be "a perfect card for Sandra".  January will still be Sandra's month.  Missing a wonderful friend and cherishing the memories. Love Wayne
