TERRY WILLIAMS

August 23, 1950 - September 4, 2023

Some say that “grief is the price you pay for love”. If so, that would explain why this hurts so much.

With heartfelt sadness, the family announces the passing of Terry after a brief illness. With family by his side, we said goodbye to a loving partner, proud father, best poppa ever, brother & brother-in-law, uncle, and a dear friend to so many. Terry ensured no words were left unspoken and true to form, he found a way to ease our pain with love and humour.

He will be forever remembered by his loving wife Janet, his children Rhys (Mae), Kyla, Jesse (Becky), and the absolute joys of his life, his grandchildren: Lincoln, Leo, and Zoe. Also, his siblings Roger and Gillian, their families as well as many lifelong friends. Predeceased by his parents Fred and Agnes Williams.

Terry was born in Newport, Wales (UK), immigrating to Canada with his family at the age of 6. He remained the proudest Canadian Welshman you have ever met, returning home 5 times during his adult life, including one trip with the entire family. Terry was so happy to be able to share his beautiful home country and the loving family he left behind as a child. The pride and the bonds remained tight to the last day: a Welsh flag flies in our yard and Terry joined a Welsh choir where he learned to sing in Welsh (not an easy feat).

Mississauga, Ontario would become his home for the next 25 years where lifelong friendships were established and remained strong throughout his lifetime. The family settled in Cedar Grove trailer park.  Although he would later move away, he was firmly dedicated to ensuring he never lost touch with anyone, anywhere, across the globe.

Terry continued to make his annual trip back home to Ontario to do the rounds with family and friends. This past spring, he put 2,600 km on his rental car just to make sure he saw everybody.

Terry's next home was Churchill, Manitoba after graduating from Sheridan College with a degree in Security and Law Enforcement. He accepted a job as a probation officer in Churchill and landed with $27 in his pocket. He bravely left everything and everyone behind to embark on this unknown adventure into Canada’s North. Over time he took on the role of Director of the Outreach Department.

Little did he know that this adventure would change his life forever. He quickly fell in love with the town and its pristine natural landscape and the beautiful wildlife. A couple of his favourite things were to spend time on the water amongst the belugas and lay in a snowbank and admire the northern lights. He always talked about feeling so fortunate to be received by people of Churchill in the way that he was. Churchill was his magical place resulting in many more lifelong friends. And above all else, during his time in Churchill, Terry fell in love with Janet. In May 1981, in the middle of a whiteout, Terry and Janet met in the entry way of “A-Block”, with neither of them appreciating just how meaningful that handshake would soon become. They were married in 1983 and started their family in Churchill (Rhys born in 1985), returning to Winnipeg in 1986 to be closer to family. Their family soon expanded to welcome Kyla and Jesse. A few short years after moving south, Terry found a dreamy 5-acre property in East St Paul, which would become and remains the family home. After his upbringing in small spaces, Terry was so happy to be able to look out and see land, sunrises and sunsets, and even on occasion: his beloved Northern Lights.  He enjoyed his neighbourhood walks that could sometimes take hours because he stopped to chat with everyone along the way.

Watching his kids grow up to be strong, caring, and responsible adults brought him so much pride. Later in life, he found immeasurable joy when he was blessed with grandchildren.  His devotion to them was unconditional.

It was incredible how much time and energy Terry devoted to all the children in his life including nieces, nephews and friends. Guitar playing was a constant that brought so much joy to everyone.

Terry's entire career was focused on Social Services. With the move to Winnipeg came the start of a lengthy career with Child and Family Services (1986-2015). He brought a measured and calm approach to a field of work that is often so very challenging and misunderstood but he always focussed on what really mattered.

He retired in 2015, only to quickly return to the workforce, spending 2 years as a Social Worker with the River East Transcona School Division. Terry loved the school environment and felt comfortable roaming the halls once again (although this time he was not the hall monitor ensuring order like he did in his younger years). After failing to retire once again, Terry returned to Churchill on a contract basis. He resumed a role with CFS in 2017 and was thrilled to be back.  He once again felt so welcomed by the town. That summer the entire family joined him for a very memorable August long weekend. During that trip, the North gifted them with every possible magical experience in just 4 short days: belugas, bears, northern lights, the annual ball tournament, and a bonfire on the beach. The love of the North has been successfully passed down. Since Terry's last failed retirement, he was privileged to accept a position with the Terra Bay Food Services program at St John's High School, providing food security and removing barriers within education.

Terry was a man of Community. He was all about giving back, sharing what he had, and helping those less fortunate than himself. He regularly modeled and instilled these values onto his children, often making it a family affair. The family grew up volunteering together for both the Special Olympics and the Terry Fox Run, while he would later become a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. He donned his Santa Hat and Xmas tie and would come home glowing about the generosity of others. He also spent 10 years Dragon boating with the COD Squad from Concordia, raising money for Cancer Care.

His Halloween magic shows in the neighbourhood became a highlight for many, as was his Christmas caroling, and he always made sure to lead his Folk Fest gate crew in song.

Sports always played a huge part in Terry’s life. From a very early age he discovered the love of hockey, lacrosse, and golf. With sports came a lifetime of friendships that he cherished greatly. On trips back to Ontario, Janet would hear many a story of “Terry O”, the goaltender for the Dixie Beehives. Lacrosse stories quickly followed about playing semi-pro for the Mississauga PCO. Terry coached his boys and their friends for many years. His approach was always calm and supportive.

Refereeing lacrosse was another passion of his along with developing a mentorship program for young referees. He later shared that joy with both of his boys.

Terry embraced the simple things in life and found joy and wonder in nature. He took many long walks in Birds Hill Park, always with bird seed in his pocket to feed the chickadees.

To honour Terry: play with the kids as much as possible, share with those who are less fortunate, hug your friends and family tight, sing songs, go for walks, and think of him every time you see Northern Lights.

Donations can be made to Special Olympics and the Terry Fox Foundation.

A celebration of Terry’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, November 2, at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain, 340 Provencher Blvd.

Terry's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Janet, your words and photos brought tears to my eyes. In Every single picture, his eyes and smile convey the warmth that Terrys presence always brought. I was so very sad and shocked to hear of his passing.  I have never met you but feel like I know you well. I remember asking someone what you were like and they said “She’s the female version of Terry”. I knew Terry in high school but saw him many times over the years and he never changed. Just the sweetest person I have ever met.  My heart breaks for you and your family.

Coach Terry / Mr. Williams  You were one of the best people I have met in my entire life. I was Lucky enough to have been coached for several teams over the years by Coach Terry and have a lot of other memories from growing up friends with Jesse. One of my favourite memories is Coach Terry taking Jesse and I to the drive in movie when we were kids to see the movie “white chicks”.   I can’t put into words how much love and respect I have for Coach Terry; He was so genuine, kind and approachable  and always made you feel good after talking to him. He always greeted me with a hug, even if I hadn’t seen him in years . Thank you Coach Terry for being a great coach, role model and friend, you’ll be missed. Thoughts are with the Williams family, so sorry for you loss ❤️ Ryan Barnard

I was shocked and deeply saddened when I learned of Terry's sudden passing.  While I never had the privilege of having him as my supervisor, I did get to know him as a colleague at Access River East.  I was awed and inspired by his leadership, both of his own team and as a supervisor in our workplace.  He made a point to check in with his staff on Monday and Fridays and from my perspective, did an amazing job supporting them in the challenging field of child welfare.  Terry was compassionate, caring and respectful, displayed a healthy and balanced perspective on life.  Christmases were extra special when he would bring in his guitar and we would sing carols with him in the lunchroom.  His humour and warmth helped make Access River East a good place to work. This July at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, I was delighted to see him with his crew when I arrived.  He greeted me warmly and gave me a hug.  I introduced him to my husband and we had a quick visit.  It was always so good to see Terry. Janet, Rhys, Kyla, Jesse and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all as you go through this difficult time of loss.  Terry loved you deeply and was so proud of you all!  Remember that love crosses all dimensions and never dies. ❤

Terry's infectious smile and enthusiasm for life has been a part of our lives for over forty years, since, like many others on these pages, our paths first crossed in the magical place that is Churchill. He wanted to learn guitar, and I (Robin) was the only person, it seemed, who could teach him.  We played Father and Son over and over.  Ironically, on what would be our last evening together, we played it again on his and Jan's deck...Terry confident on guitar, and me with his father's banjo! We were privileged to spend his 65th birthday with him and Jan in Edinburgh, where we scaled the dizzy sights of the Scott Monument! It is impossible to say what we will miss....the mutual ribbing over rugby when Wales played Scotland, the self-deprecating Christmas newsletters.... just having such an amazing person as part of our lives. Jan and family, we are heartbroken for you , but he will live on in our hearts and you will always be part of our family. With love from Anne and Robin P.S. Terry's team won the 1981 Canada Day Hudson Bay Dip and Race (I have always said with skulduggery from Mark Fleming(see him below)!

I had the privilege of having Terry as my first supervisor in my social work career. Terry's guidance and support helped shape my career and I am grateful for his mentorship. Terry was an exceptionally kind man who valued people and connection. I'll never forget the nic names he would give staff, his daily lunchtime check ins, his love for music, and many stories shared about his time spent in Churchill.  My sincere condolences to Terry's family.  Erin O'Driscoll-Martens

I had the honour and privilege of being Terry's supervisor for numerous years up until Terry's retirement from Winnipeg Child and Family Services. Terry was an experienced child welfare supervisor who always had the best interests of both the clients and his staff . Terry as a seasoned supervisor was highly regarded across Winnipeg Child and Family Services and he was respected across the entire child welfare community. Terry in his personal life was a devoted family man, a talented athlete and he made life so much better for disadvantaged individuals through his many volunteer community experiences. My condolences to you Janet and to your family on the loss of Terry. A truly remarkable man. Dan Berg

I first met Terry in the early '80's in Churchill.  We became fast friends.  That friendship never waned for over 40 years.  Our time together in Churchill was memorable.  First real estate partner!   We bought a house trailer in Churchill and rented it out.  Big real estate tycoons.  Bought it for $5,000 and sold it for $5,100.  You can see our business accumen right there!   I was in the lobby of the apartment block across from the Churchill Health Centre with Terry at the very moment Janet walked through that door for the first time as a new nurse in Churchill.  Janet and Terry met and the rest, as they say, is history.  A special bond and love between the two of them from that date forward.  Through the years, Terry and I connected regularly including golf games when he returned to visit family in Ontario and most recently, a truly fun game at Falcon Lake a couple of years back.  Kim and I were blessed to have Terry join us overnight at the cottage after that game and he was captured by the special place that is Jessica Lake just as we have always been.  I am not surprising anyone when I say Terry was a giver.  He always thought about others first.  He always asked, genuinely, how we were doing.  He taught me so much about how to be a better man and I thank him for that every day.  We miss you dearly Terry.  Thinking of you Janet, Rhys, Mae, Kyla, Jesse, Becky and Terry's grandchildren.  Our prayers are with you.  Kim and Mark Fleming

My deepest condolences to all of Terry's loved ones. He will be missed by all the friends and acquaintances he had at the Sportex on and off the squash courts. He was always a fair and fun opponent even with his devious competitive streak and skill. He would not hesitate to play all comers even beginners with whom he could encourage and instill his love of the sport. My special bond with Terry was also our love of skating the river trail and one often asked question after our squash games was did you bring your skates? Like the Aurora on the clear night sky...you left an imprint on our hearts Terry only this one is forever.

Our heartfelt condolences to you, Janet, family and friends.  I have been trying to type this message for the past week, but am struggling to find just the right words………. Terry was an amazing man, with a heart of gold and a huge amount of compassion.  I truly believe they broke the mold after he was born….. You have honored him in a wonderful way.  He is looking down upon you now, saying “they like me!  They really like me!!”  I don’t think there was anyone more humble than he.   The world would be a much better place if there were more “Terry’s”. Take Care.

What a beautiful tribute to Terry.  It has been a pleasure and honor to get to know Terry through his volunteer role as a board member with Continuity Care.  He contributed to our organization in so many ways, but I will remember him most for his kind, compassionate and positive spirit.  He is missed already.    Suzanne Swanton

Our condolences to you Janet and your family. Terri was an amazing guy, who always had a smile and words of kindness for everyone. He was a great colleague at the Churchill Health Centre and always denied that he took the last chocolate chip cookie at coffee break. During his later years when he came to Churchill he always dropped by to chat/ share with us stories of his and Janet’s adventures and show pictures of his grandkids. Rest in peace our friend, when we see the Northern Light’s we’ll think of you shining down on us. Vicky and Glen McEwan

Janet and family Terry was a true hero to all who were fortunate enough to know him. Such a positive humble man who always had the time to listen. Janet and family I want to thank you for the wonderful tribute you shared of Terry.  It was exceptional and gave me a glimpse into Terry’s life after I left Churchill.  Terry supervised me when I worked in Outreach and demonstrated the need for compassion and caring when you worked in the social services field.  One of the many memories I have of Terry in Churchill is when he proposed to Janet at work singing John Denver’s song, “Annie”.  Many tears of joy that day.  I know lately you must be experiencing tears of sadness and lost.  Janet and family you have been blessed with a wonderful, husband, father, and grandfather.  May he continue to play his guitar with joy and spread his support and love with others in heaven.   What a special man!

Dear Janet and family.  So sad to hear of Terry’s passing.  It had been almost forty years when I received a surprise call from Terry at New Years a couple of years ago after running into one of “our kids” from the one-to-one club at a conference in Ottawa.  I would like to say that following Terry in his first job in Churchill was a “hard act to follow”, but honestly he had left such a great legacy that it was a pleasure and a great adventure to start my career in that position.  I am so sad that I won’t have the opportunity to follow that phone call with the in-person meet up that we talked about but I want you to know that Terry had a hugely positive impact on my professional development and I considered him a friend and a mentor as my northern adventures took flight.  This tribute to Terry is a beautiful testament to the truth that the good you  put out in the world multiplies and comes right back to you.

How does one begin to share the many memories of such a wonderful man. Terry was my supervisor for a number years with WPG CFS. But he was more than a supervisor; he cared about his staff and took every opportunity to provide loving and calming support. I remember when my old van was falling apart and I had no heat in it during the cold winter. He offered to help financially, if need be, for repairs to the heating system. At Christmas, he would bring his guitar to work and sing to us. It was so beautiful and calming. My boys also played lacrosse and Terry often was the referee. Always made a point of helping the kids understand the rules. Always a pat on the back and a hello to the parents. There are many stories to share of this kind and giving person. My deepest and sincere sympathies to his family. He loved you all so much. Rest well sweet Terry.

From love in Ontario: Uncle Terry and his smile, his kindness, his magic tricks and his genuine interest in us and our lives are all memories we hold close. We are heartbroken for you, Auntie Janet and family, on this loss of such a loving uncle. We are so lucky to have had that time with you this past May.. a time we all will cherish…There were many laughs shared that day. I’ve attached an old photo that always brings a smile to our faces - Terry came to visit us and we served him a terrible home cooked meal and he said it was fantastic. He loved being in a home surrounded by children and laughter and love. He didn’t mind about the food - he loved the time with us. We will always miss him. So sad to hear of Terry’s passing when he had so much more life to live.  I have many memories of Terry, first working with him as a collateral and partner supervisor at CFS and then being happy to see his familiar face at my first management meeting after starting my new position at the WRHA in 2003. We had many opportunities over the next 11 years to work together and working in the same building offered many opportunities for interaction. Terry was always positive, interested and trustworthy and was a great support to his staff. At Christmas he always made the rounds with his guitar, playing and leading people in singing Christmas carols. He always got the building into the Christmas spirit! And we would always look forward to his friendly welcome to the Folk Festival, as he volunteered at the main gate for many years. Bernie, my daughter Courtney and I all offer our deepest condolences to Janet and his family, for this huge loss in their lives. My thoughts are with you all at this time. ❤ Debbie Bond

What a beautiful tribute to Terry, he was such a caring kind soul - he treated everyone with such respect  and was always willing to listen and meet people where they were at - an esteemed colleague - he will be missed by so many far and wide  My sympathies to the family

We were heart broken to hear of Terry’s passing. He was a great friend who always had a smile on his face and time to just listen and catch up.  When my parents were declining it seemed I always ran into Terry and he always knew just what to say to make me feel better.  We will miss his smiling face.  Sending love to Jan and the whole family, we know a huge hole has been left in your family.  Praying your wonderful memories give you some comfort at this difficult time.  💕.  Love, Linda & Brian Pescitelli

Terry was a wonderful man, my heart breaks for the family. I have so many fun memories of dragon boating with Terry and Jan and golfing with Terry where he witnessed me getting my first eagle. Such a gentle and loving soul and so happy he was able to be a great Poppa, no doubts he would be. Hugs to the family.

Sending my sincere condolences to Janet and the Williams family.  I had the opportunity to work with Terry in Winnipeg from 1987-2000 at Wpg CFS and he was a kind and genuine colleague and friend. His love for his family was always so evident and he always spoke so proudly of you all.  ❤ All my sympathy, Shirley Reimer
