JOY MARY WILLIS

September 5, 1959 - July 31, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our mum Joy Willis, surrounded by her family, at the Riverview Health Centre.

Joy was born and raised in West Vancouver, daughter of the late William and Elaine Willis. Joy was a stellar student and her keen intellect was evident throughout her life. Joy’s earlier professional life was devoted to ballet where she held a position as a dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. In later years, Joy’s seamstress expertise led to challenging and fulfilling work in Wardrobe for the RWB, Royal MTC and in film.

Joy leaves behind her children Jennifer (Wujec), Paul and David Stafford; her grandchildren Ava, Aiden, Liam Wujec, and Violet Stafford; her daughters-in-law Allison Stafford and Jess Hurtubise, whom she loved like her own; her brothers, Pat and Mike Willis, her beloved Aunt Jocelyn Willis and many cousins and relatives in BC; as well, her “chosen sisters” Cathy Fillmore (Rick Handlon), Teresa Bickle, Marie Paterson, Kathleen Bell and Diane Campbell (Rob Campbell), and numerous close friends in Cabo.

Mum had a magical array of talents and her cherished family and friends were the fortunate beneficiaries. Whether it was a Halloween costume or saving a wedding gown, Joy’s creations were always instinctive and unparalleled works of art. Her children’s birthday parties were particularly fantastical and fun!

Mum carried herself with elegance in every aspect of her life whether socializing at Malachi in her chic lake attire, relaxing with the “No Popcorn Gals” over wine on deck night, or hosting fancy tea parties with the grandkids.

Our Mum was incredibly strong and determined, definitely a force to be reckoned with. She loved being a mother and grandmother and was a fiercely loyal friend.

Mum fought so hard to beat her cancer and have more time with those she loved, all the while, keeping her positive spirit.

We were so lucky to have her in our lives, so lucky to call her our friend, so lucky to call her our mum.

We hold you close

within our hearts,

and there you will remain,

to walk with us

throughout our lives.

We would like to thank the many members of our mother’s care team, Dr Schacter and the amazing staff at The Riverview Health Centre’s 3 East Wing for taking care of us all as we said goodbye to our remarkable Mum.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 603 Wellington Crescent (The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg).

Hello Jennifer, Paul & David ,

My kindest thoughts to you, your Mom’s children & your families.

This part of your life’s journey is very impactful as has your Mom’s journey with the illness that took her life.

My connection with your Mom was through David at Robert H. Smith & our son Elijah(Gerry).

Jennifer & Paul you also were our babysitters for awhile for Elijah(Gerry)& you were both great with Elijah(Gerry)❣️❣️

Your Mom was so kind & understanding when we would talk about the ballet. Our daughter Janine was with the professional division at the National Ballet in Grade 9 & I would look to your Mom when I was concerned about her.

I am very grateful for my relationship with your Mom as are many others.

Love, Light, Laughter & Gratitude,

Pat Reid
